Best damn BBQ period. Every side was amazing. Brisket was off the chain, and they didn't let down on naming their restaurant after the ribs. Staff was super friendly. So glad we made a stop here on our way out of Montgomery. This cooking put my soul at peace and was beautifully satisfying. Eat here. Eat here. Eat here. read more

Call myself stopping for food since my niece graduation dinner was at hibachi , so I ventured off to this place and boy was I Extremly satisfied. Best POUND CAKE EVER let me say that , moist and taste like a church repass cake and it was nothing to play with , I ate that first. The ribs fresh but I know I neeed it in the smoker a tad bit longer for me but better than standard. The chicken was the best , Moist and sauce was perfect. I believe it's mustard based so it goes with the chicken well . Service stellar, Momma takes orders and the other family makes them. She was so sweet and the ambiance is country but it don't disappoint and I'm driving back because it was that darn good . So if ever in the area STOP and get some read more

Really delicious ribs, smoked well but full and not overcooked. Topped with a funky rub and a homemade red sauce that does the trick. Great value with generous servings. One of my favorite rib places in the state. Good selection of sides. I went for the Lima beans and black eyed peas. Both were excellent. And I liked that the white bread was Texas toast sized--plenty to finish off the drippings. Easy to find, lots of parking. No more than 3 minutes off of the interstate. read more

Ordered the 1 lb brisket at K & J rib shack. The meat was well flavored and moist. "The Sauce" was excellent as well on the brisket. It's not the best brisket I have had but very good. The portion seemed to be a true one pound or more - enough for 2-3 meals with sides for one person. The ribs separately were 5/5 well flavored, thick with meat, moist - with the Sweet Smokey sauce. read more

Come hungry and come with time. This place makes Dreamland BBQ look like cafeteria food. The ribs are huge and perfectly cooked. My rib plate came with 4 monstrous ribs covered in sauce. They only have one sauce, but it is tasty, slightly sweet and with interesting spices. Very well done. The building is a bit of a shack and this is a family run restaurant. K & J work hard to make sure the guests are happy. Their food is not fast (hence the beginning where I said to come with plenty of time.) Sides were great. Mac & cheese, collards, okra and fries were all awesome. They have about a dozen other sides available. Meat - A+ Sauce - A- (great sauce but no choices) Sides - A Service - A Ambiance - C (makes the food better, though, right?) Best BBQ in Montgomery, hands down! read more

Please for the love of all that is good, stop here for a meal if you're headed south on I65...well worth the few minutes off the freeway to get some great BBQ. Friendly owners making solid authentic Dixie Q. We had the chicken, ribs, greens, black eyed peas, corn bread and some unsweetened tea. Some downside. Chicken has a serious smoke as noted by another reviewer. Corn bread is pretty dry. Serve on trays for those eating in and save the styrofoam. Too many disposables. Really liked the ribs. A little dried out in spots on the reheat. Good with or without the sauce. Loved the sides. Will be back. You should check this place out. read more

Easily the best BBQ I've ever had. We evacuated from Florida to Alabama to get away from Hurricane Irma and I had a craving for some good southern soul food. This place had good reviews for the most part so, we decided to check it out. Oh man, we are so glad we did! We pull up and see the huge smoker out front. As soon as we got out of the car, we were welcomed by that delicious smoky BBQ smell. Once we entered, we placed our order with the super friendly lady at the counter. I ordered the pulled pork dinner with collards and mac n' cheese. This place is a tiny shack but, don't let the appearance fool you, the food served here is truly special. My pulled pork was juicy, tender, and super flavorful. The pork had that perfect smoky coating while easily pulling apart with a fork. The collards were delicious and well-cooked with a great flavor. The mac n' cheese was baked nice and cheesy. Everything was absolutely delicious. The BBQ places back home don't even compare. I'm not sure when or if I'll be back in Montgomery but, if I find myself in the area - I will make it a point to stop here as the food was that good. read more

As soon as you step out of the car you smell the smoker...always a great sign for a BBQ place. Doesn't look like much on the outside, but the food is excellent. First time thru Alabama. Looked on Yelp for local spot. Great reviews so we tried them. Wow! Possibly the best ribs I've ever had. A half a slab is plenty for 3 people. Authentic corn bread with collard greens, Mac n cheese, Lima beans and wedges. Everything was good but the ribs are to die for. K & J Rib Shack - Best ribs I've ever had!! - Steakhouses Near Me - Montgomery, Alabama

Ah, soul food in Montgomery. Am starting to see a pattern here. Decent food. Dilapidated environment. SLOW but friendly service. Sides that taste good because they are drenched in syrup and butter. My friends ordered the pulled pork sandwich and two of them went back and got a separate rib meal because the sandwich was not filling. The consensus is that the pulled pork sandwich is really small, hardly had any pork, and was not that great. I split a half slab of ribs with a friend (3 ribs each) with two sides and two drinks, which came to $16.50 total. Not bad. If you're going to come here, the ribs are the way to go. They didn't have half of their listed sides. No fried corn. No turnips. No mashed potatoes. Go to the bathroom at home first. This is not the place to come in and use their restroom. I looked at the stained door on their unisex bathroom and almost convinced myself to not wash my hands. I finally caved (yes am weak) and went in to wash my hands. It was pretty gross, and humid and had a moldy smell :( I get the whole southern soul food atmosphere thing but this is just taking dilapidation too far. Not a fan of run down places and I feel that all restaurants, no matter how good the food is, should have clean, working restrooms. Ambiance is one thing. Things totally falling apart and disgusting is another. The ribs are decent. But they are nothing you can't live without. And certainly nothing to tolerate the dilapidated environment for. It's also disappointing to see a business using only styrofoam for EVERYTHING and plastic packets of disposable utensils. Yes it's easier for them because they don't have to wash anything. But the long-term environmental consequences are not factored into the 0.2 cents that they spend on each styrofoam item which we and our future generations will be paying dearly for. In this day and age, to use styrofoam for everything, including meals that are "for here", is just irresponsible and lazy. read more

Incredible. After reading all the positive Yelp reviews, we decided to try K&J during our 24 hour stay in Montgomery. Holy crap. We ordered ribs, brisket, okra, mac and cheese, and collard greens--and they gave us cornbread muffins and white bread. I'm from Kansas City, so I like to think of myself as an amateur BBQ expert. This was easily the best BBQ I've ever had. The staff got a good laugh at us. We ordered so much food it was embarrassing, and on our way out they kept asking if we wanted more food. "How about half a chicken? You sure you don't want anything else?" Great people, great food. I'm just going to sit here in BBQ-dry Denver and dream about K&J. Sigh. read more

Total hole-in-the-wall restaurant off the 80, if it didn't have the sign on it, you'd pass right by it and miss out on an awesome BBQ/rib experience! When you walk in, you can see that everything is homemade, from the white board menu and menu times like "ice" or "cool-aid" to the building itself. Ordered the 4 bone rib and 2 side meal...12 bucks, which came with cornbread. Pretty big meal for lunch; the lady was telling us that there was a two-rib option...I thought the ribs were gonna be like small baby back ribs, but they're full sized ribs! Again, why the meal was so large for lunch...I would opt for the 2 rib meal the next time around. But the ribs (with a side of sauce) were AWESOME, along with my collard greens and bbq baked beans. Wish I had room for dessert cuz they had a couple of enticing options, but I simply had no space left in my little fat tummy of mine. Loved the service, super friendly and really let us take our time when we were ordering because they wanted to make sure that we were satisfied; which I definitely was! Hope I can come back soon! :) read more

I really enjoyed this place. From the moment you pull up and the smoker out front you know this is a real bbq joint. My wife and I both had the pulled pork. Both thought it was good but would have liked it dry rather in sauce. More of a purist when it comes to smoked meat and would like to decide how much sauce to add. The sides were the hit of the meal. I had really good potato salad and some of the best collards I have had in a long while. The owners were very nice and enjoyed talking to them about smoking meat. Worth the stop. read more

K & J Rib Shack - This is a HALF SLAB!!! - Steakhouses Near Me - Montgomery, Alabama

I don't understand how this place is the #1 BBQ place in Montgomery. My buddy was in from Utah and wanted BBQ, so we got on Yelp to find the best place. According to other people, K&J is fantastic, which is the exact opposite of what we experienced last night. First off, I am not hard to please. My only expectation is that when I pay you for a meal I want it to taste better than if I prepared it myself. If it's not even as good as I can make for 1/5th of the cost, then I don't want it. From the time we walked in to the time we got our food was 55 minutes. Yes. Seriously. 55 minutes. It really wasn't that busy and it isn't that big of a place. I figured the food must be really good because it took so long to prepare. It took so long, in fact, that they gave people their food one at a time. There were two other tables while we were there and people would be finished eating before everyone at their table even got their food. Now. The food itself. I got a pulled pork sandwich and mac'n'cheese. My buddy got ribs, a pulled pork sandwich, okra, and mac'n'cheese. Friends, I'm not exaggerating when I tell you it was straight up one of the worst BBQ meals I've ever had. The pork was incredibly tough and the mac'n'cheese tasted as if it had been sitting out for a while. And by "a while" I mean three days. It was stale and bland. My buddy gave me a rib and it was tough and flavorless. He agreed with my assessment of the pork and mac'n'cheese. He said the only part of his meal that was decent was the okra. The only thing I invested at K&J that's was worth anything was their sauce. These folks at least make a good BBQ sauce. To put it in perspective, I've been in the Army for fifteen years. I've eaten some really terrible food in some really terrible places. With that said, given the choice between K&J and an MRE, I'd take an MRE. Think about that for a moment. That's how terrible K&J was last night. It's possible they were having an off night, though I'll never know because I won't be going back. read more

I can't review the food as I never got it. I have been excitedly waiting to try the pulled pork from K an J rib shack on Perry Hill Road. The State is currently under a mask order. As I approached the door I saw a sign stating mask required (good sign). Here's why I can't review food. Most employees weren't wearing masks or they were pulled under their chins or noses. That's a problem. Brought it to their attention of employees and got a stare. Maybe when Covid is ever over I'll get to try those ribs. ‍ read more

This place is kind of the definition of a barbecue joint, with its smoker out front perfuming the air with the pungent aroma of smoked meats, and the humble interior belieing the quality of the food. In other words, the real Dixie. We stopped on our way through for lunch and were greeted by the friendly man at the counter. I opted for the smoked chicken leg quarter with collard greens and black eyed peas, and my partner had the half rack of ribs with the same two sides; both of us asked for sauce on the side. Each meal came with a cornbread muffin that was the kind I especially like; a bit crumbly and not too sweet. Of the two meats we picked, and I had some of both, the ribs were the winner~ a generous portion of nicely smoked and meaty ribs with the rib tip intact, still toothsome (if you've read any of my barbecue reviews, you know I detest overcooked meat). The chicken was a bit over smoked for my taste, but I admit that's a personal preference. They offer one sauce, a tangy and sweet tomato based sauce that was nice with the ribs. The sides were excellent. I teased the guy at the front because the covered pie plate on the counter was empty. Perhaps I'll get to try some pie on my next visit! read more

(perry hill road location) Not what I was expecting. The building seemed to have a consistent flow of traffic so a friend and I decided to give it a try. I ordered a plate with ribs, greens and yams. My friend ordered a plate with ribs, rice and gravy and greens and chicken. Her chicken was over cooked as were our ribs. We were both very disappointed. Tough and dry would be the only way to describe the ribs and for the chicken. My greens lacked flavor, but it was easily fixed at home with some hot sauce/vinegar. The yams were fine not too sweet but didn't seem to have any spices added (cinnamon/nutmeg/brown sugar). I wish we would have taken pictures but we were both disappointed. Maybe I just went on a "bad" day. read more

Don't let the simple interior or unassuming exterior deter you from a great BBQ restaurant. This is not a franchise, but a friendly, hole-in-the-wall, family owned restaurant. The menu is on chalk board behind the counter and fairly self-explanatory, but if you take your time to read it or decide, no one taking the order will get mad or rush you. This is a choice place for smokey, tender ribs. The half rack order (seven ribs) was huge! The fries were fresh, thin cut (shoestring), and made to order, but were bit soggy. Not a deal breaker. If you put K&J's sauce on an old tin can, I'd probably eat it. -half rack of ribs -fries read more

I have finally found the best ribs I have ever ate. The ribs were juicy with a nice crust and the collards were seasoned just right. The Kool-Aid had that extra cup of sugar taste that goes so well with BBQ, especially ribs. I ordered the 2-rib option instead of the plate. The 2-rib option comes with two ribs and one side. The plate comes with 4-ribs and two sides. BBQ is about the experience and love the pit/grill master feels about their setup, approach, and meat. K&J has a grill right in front of the restaurant. You can see them take the meat right off the grill. They also serve other soul food classics like pig ears and pig feet. If you love your Q super heavy on smoke, this is your place. The chicken was succulent and juicy, with a nicely balanced sauce. It was a perfect condiment to the bird. Partnered with the coleslaw and red beans and rice, it was a nice combination bite. Alone, the smoke intense poultry was just too much for my tastebuds. The much anticipated corn bread side was a complete disappointment. It was deemed better suited to use in a stuffing drenched in stock. The large pork ribs were untrimmed so you had to find the easy meat that can be released from the bone. This was a toothsome endeavor, no fall off the bone meat here. Again, super smokey but at least the pork meat could stand up better flavor wise than the delicate chicken meat. We sampled nothing that would draw us back here. Satisfactory, but nothing special. read more

On a drive to the coast, three of us stopped in based on the Yelp reviews. I have no problem with dives, but many will be revolted by this place. My group of three covered most of the menu with half-rack, pork dinner, and brisket dinner. I've spent decades eating BBQ frequently, 98% in west TN and eastern Arkansas. K & J is easily a bottom-three BBQ experience of my lifetime. Mediocre at best (ribs), downright bad (pork saturated in sweet syrupy sauce) at worst. DIVINE! I'm a Southerner, so I've had my fair share of delicious barbecue in my life. K&J's is easily one of my top 5 BBQ experiences. I'm in Montgomery for a few weeks and decided to come here since it's Memorial Day weekend and BBQ is a must. I had their 4-rib plate, which came with cornbread and two sides, and I ordered a sweet tea. The ribs are so huge that I could only eat two, so unless you're sure you can handle that much pork or don't mind having some left for dinner, err on the side of less food. The ribs were just a little tough, but not so bad that they detracted from the flavor, and the sauce was delicious. My sides were baked beans and collard greens. The beans were just as I like them, sweet and golden brown. The greens tasted as though they were fresh, not frozen or canned. The cornbread was good. The sweet tea is every Southerner's dream! Some reviews said it's easy to miss the restaurant due to the lack of a sign, but they have one that looks fairly new which stands out; in any event, if you don't look up, just let the smell of fresh BBQ guide you. The staff is extremely friendly and answered all of my questions. This is a family-run place, so there was a young man taking orders who was nice and professional. Please tip them, especially because everything is very decently priced!!!! I'll definitely be back here at least once more before I leave the city. read more
