The fries came out hot, the pork was juicy, and the greens flavorful. Doesn't come with sauce on it but there's plenty of options on the dressing table to pick from. The only downside is the parking situation... it's insanity, with folks here in work trucks, cars, motorcycles, you name it. Pulling up here to a full parking lot before noon on a Monday was an early sign that I was in for a real treat. I know people throw out places like Texas, the Carolinas and Tennessee as barbecue meccas, but I stand by my claim that some of the best barbecue comes from the great state of Alabama and Fatman's is great proof of my claim. I walked in and there was a line, but it moved fast and the helpless taking our our orders were friendly. The inside is pretty much low on ambiance, but the food is the real star here. Since it was packed inside, I got my food to-go and ate at a nearby park. I had the pulled pork plate with camp stew and potato salad. Everything was absolutely wonderful. I stopped at Fatman's Smokehouse BBQ on the way to the airport to pick up some slabs and I am glad I made that decision. Fatman's is a solid spot for ribs. The price is now $27 a slab, which is not quite the value proposition at $21 I see elsewhere as it has been. They have pulled barbecue and some other offerings, but this place is all about the ribs and that's alright by me. I sat down after ordering the three ribs and fries plate with a drink. The fries were good and so were the ribs, good enough I added a slab to my order to pack in my luggage. It was Iron Bowl Saturday and Fatman's is definitely in Tide territory. Given they were closed for Thanksgiving and the day afterwards, the ribs seemed not to have the smoke as one would expect from the name of the place. The barbecue sauce is a little on the sweet side, which may be a consideration for some people. Offering a spicy version of the sauce would be my recommendation. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. They wrapped them up for packing in my luggage as I requested over the phone before I arrived. The place is dated, but I had no cleanliness worries as some seem to exaggerate in their ratings. Fatman's gets three and a half stars and could easily be four stars if they kept them in the smoker longer to get the smokehouse flavor deeper in the ribs and render out a bit more of the fat and caramelize them a bit. Generally, more time in the smoker would be my recommendation, but your mileage may vary if you come under normal circumstances when they have not been closed for a few days and have more time with the ribs. So far this is my favorite bbq spot I've come across in Montgomery. Their smoked wings were cooked perfectly and their pulled pork sandwich is by far the best I've ever had. It is rare that I will write a review immediately after dining at a restaurant, but in this case I will make the exception. As I've mentioned in the past, anytime I'm South of Richmond, VA, I always strive to enjoy Southern fare and especially barbecue. BBQ down south is akin to a religion, where generations of pit masters pass along secrets of specific spice rubs, using only certain purveyors to get their hickory or mesquite logs, and of course, controlling temperatures and cook times to get the perfect crust and consistency of the meat. Let me put this in simple terms - Fatman's Smokehouse is the REAL DEAL. The interior is basic and reminiscent of a bbq joint from the 50's. Basic tables with rolls of paper towels, sit on top of a plain floor, dingy lighting, and ceiling fans to cool the otherwise nondescript dining areas. And when you get your food, it is served on Styrofoam with plastic cutlery. But the ribs - OMFG, they are out of this world "amazing". The ribs have that bark that I'm always looking for in good 'cue, which has a slight crunch, but then quickly gives way to tender succulent meat. The only slight detraction is that the rub might be a bit too salty...but that's just my taste. There are a variety of sauces near the drink station, of which I recommend the "hot" and the "white" sauce. The "hot" sauce is the House bbq sauce with a spicy (but not too spicy) kick to it. The "white" sauce taste like a mix of ranch, light horseradish, and mayo. It doesn't sound like it would be appetizing, but trust me, you will be surprised at how good it is. I also got the house beans as a side, and a nice bonus is that there are strands of pulled pork mixed in. The beans have a slight molasses notes but the smoke flavor helps to temper the sweetness. But having the pulled pork mixed in with each bite, really elevates the humble beans to awesome side dish. I don't normally think of Alabama as one of the classic centers of BBQ, but Fatman's has changed my mind. The ribs here rival ANYTHING I've had in Memphis, North Carolina, and come close to the mecca of Kansas City, MO. I'm only in town for a few days for business, but I have a feeling I'll be eating here...A LOT! read more

Ridonkulous! These ain't no skinny ribs either, you get a meaty portion with a nice smokey taste that will hit your taste buds from all angles. The location is a bit run down but that's what makes it great. One day I might try their wings but I am feeling the ribs so I will stick to what I know. Check this place out for a quick lunch. It's located in a small red building that screams "good BBQ." The restaurant is very clean and the service is friendly and fast. I ordered the pulled pork plate with 2 sides of greens (YUM!) My lunch was only $7 what a steal! I especially loved how my pulled pork was unsauced so I could sample the different assortments of BBQ sauces made available for use. I particularly favored the spicy BBQ sauce and the white BBQ sauce. The greens were perfect and delicious. Not to mention the portions were huge! I was starting to lose faith in Alabama BBQ before trying this place out. The food here was amazing. I ordered a half rack of ribs and some mac n' cheese. The ribs were perfectly cooked. They were tender, but not overly tender like you will find a some establishments. Also, none of the BBQ came pre-sauced. If you ever go to a BBQ restaurant and the meat comes pre-sauced this should be a red flag. The mac n' cheese was good, but nothing special. I feel that the sides at a BBQ restaurant are often overlooked, but often can set a place above the rest. They had a wide range of sauces to choose from, but the "hot" BBQ sauce was the best. As someone who loves BBQ and also smokes meat on a regular basis, I had to try the white BBQ sauce to compare notes. I found it to have too much of a mayo taste. I think they could fix that by adding more vinegar and some extra spices. Overall the food was really good and it was nice to finally find a decent BBQ joint here in Montgomery. I'm driving through alabama on a road trip and with a google search what I should be eating in alabama besides southern food is white bbq sauce. Fatman's bbq was the only thing open at 8 in the morning. Hence the hour they only had breakfast and while my heart sank that my white sauce adventure had come to a halt, the breakfast looked good anyway so it wasn't a lose. But then the cook or the owner (dunno) asked if all I wanted was a bbq sandwich and saved the day! The bbq was so flavorful and moist, the bun had butter or something melted to make it toasted and crisp but also melt in your mouth along with that meat.... As as for the white sauce, it was good. Leaned towards a mayo style sauce which I expected but also had no idea what to expect. Sweet tea was perfect too, no weird after tastes from cheap tea or bad water and not too much sugar but nice and sweet! That's important to a tea drinking texas chick. The guy up front and his staff where super nice and everything was super quick. Also wanted to note that everything tasted fresh and of quality product for what you are paying which I thought was a good value in my book. All round 5 stars for this place and thanks for being open early and being empathetic to feeling what would make my day. read more

Personally I view that BBQ spot's baked beans are as important as their meat. That being said, this place was a solid tasty pulled pork plate. I asked for inside/outside meat and was told that they smoke their meat and that's why they don't have "bark", though I did find some..Their baked beans were good, on the sweet side and very similar to Bushes. What great BBQ and at a great price!! We found Fatman's on Yelp and decided to try it based on the reviews and, who wouldn't trust a BBQ joint named Fatman's?!?! We had the ribs platter (3 ribs, 1 side, drink = $8) and the BBQ pork salad (you could choose either pork or chicken). The ribs were cooked perfectly and had the right amount of pull to them. They were seasoned well with a rub and because they weren't slathered in sauce before serving, they still had some crisp to them. The BBQ pork salad was a good size; it comes with a lot of pulled pork, lettuce, and tomato, and it's only $6. I ended up eating all the salad part and had a few ounces of pork leftover that I brought home. We also had the baked beans and banana pudding. The baked beans are REALLY good!!! IDK what they do, but they are way better than normal. They aren't sickly sweet like some beans can be, but they aren't overly smoky either. You should just try them. The banana pudding was also delicious. It tastes like a really creamy vanilla-banana pudding with some vanilla wafers mixed in. The restaurant is straightforward with no frills.
