I stopped by the Smokehouse Pit BBQ today and decided to get the fried chicken liver basket with fried green tomatoes. I was not disappointed at all. I know a lot of folks do not care for chicken livers but if you do, you must try these. They were cooked perfectly, and the fried green tomatoes never disappoint. If you are in a hurry, be patient. Two things to know, #1, there might not be more than a couple servers working and more than likely they are busting their buns waiting on tables, #2, most of the food that you order will be cooked as it's ordered. Do not expect to get your order 5 minutes after it's placed. But, it's worth the wait to me. Not everyone agrees, but this is my review. The staff has ALWAYS been super nice and attentive as much as possible. I don't get upset if the server is not standing by waiting to fill my drink or get me an extra napkin. This was my 3rd Alabama BBQ restaurant I've tried since I moved here. I had the sampler's platter with 4 meats and 2 sides. We also had the smoked chicken wings. These were good. Brisket- no smoke flavor- super thin slice. Not good. Pork rib- nice smoke flavor but was a little tough and very small rib. Sausage- good - store bought this brand is made in Alabama. Turkey breast- garbage- why would a bbq restaurant use Deli Turkey for their smoked turkey. This wasn't even smoked. French fries were great. Huge basket. Mac and cheese- macaroni was way over cooked and the cheese sauce tasted like it was Chefs Mate brand canned cheese sauce. I will be back to try again. Server was good. read more

Smokehouse BBQ is great for breakfast and the BBQ is better than average compared to a number of places in the area. Pancakes are just HUGE, which is awesome. I only eat half and take the rest home for later. Be aware that with the breakfast menu, "lighter" options are scarce. For the BBQ, I have tried several different items. While not outstanding, I can say that I have enjoyed them all. The veggies sides have sometimes been a little off, but I admit to being picky about vegetables. Overall, I like Smokehouse. I just swung by to grab some lunch. We used to love the smokehouse under the previous owners. To say it was a let down is an understatement. I paid $20 for dry brisket, bland Mac n cheese, and potato salad that was more less cold mashed potatoes. The portions are also small for $20 a plate. read more

I have had breakfast from here which was good. Decided to Purchase some smoked wings-Jamaican Jerk flavor and this is what I got. Fried wings drowned in unauthentic jerk seasoning. Food is good, don't trust them with your credit card. I used to eat here often years ago during the prior ownership. Since moving here 7 months ago. I have eaten once by order and pickup, which was a fiasco, the prices on the menu were horribly off from when I went to pick it up. Second time it took a while to get the food to us and was cold. Now, the staff is friendly, and the food is good if it's warm, I'll give you that. Third time? Server and food was great. However, something or someone decided they needed to charge our credit card an extra $66. Yes, two separate charges from Smoke House on our bank. One for $31 for the meal, and one for $66. Really strange. The manager says he's seen it occur about six times in the last year. He also said it could have been a pending hold for the tip we gave. So you "might" get a pending charge of $66 to cover your tip. I've heard of that from gas stations using a hold when paying for gas by credit card, but not BBQ. After contacting a manager that said they would look into it and giving them a couple of days to reverse it, and contacting our back about it, the manager says he can find no charge for the $66. Yet the bank shows it as pending from Smoke House BBQ Millbrook, Al. Apparently someone doesn't know how their own system works, or something really strange is going on there. He could even tell us what we ate when we were there, but no real idea what the charge was, and it isn't showing now. Managers suggestion? Pay in cash next time and avoid the problem. I won't be going back, I'm glad I caught the charge, but it's been a week, plenty of paperwork we had to do at the bank to have it looked into, yet the manager now says he doesn't even see the charge? He did offer to pay us in cash for the charge, and we could bring him the money back if the bank reversed the charge, but that's not the point. Who or what is randomly charging extra money to credit cards. The "tip hold" wasn't charged on the previous two purchases there. Tomorrow will be seven days and no solution. Other than "Pay in cash next time." I won't be going back. read more

Wow . Invited my sister and her kids for lunch today at Smokehouse BBQ. It was terrible. Half of the items we ordered were not available ( chicken, coke, banana pudding), the food we waited for was not good, ( burger greasy, macaroni and cheese greasy and not tasting very good). However, the dining area was closed ( for repairs), so the flies were abundant when the meal was served. I have eaten here for years. I came home for a visit after a couple of years, could not wait for some wonderful BBQ. We were EXTREMELY disappointed. I will never recommend this place again. I was skeptical to eat here when I saw previous reviews, but I heard there was a new owner and my dad, who lives nearby, said it was very good. We ordered ribs, pulled pork, wings, collard greens, bbq beans, coleslaw, and banana pudding. Everything was delicious! The bbq beans had shredded pork mixed in, and were so smokey and good! The ribs were cooked very well, the pulled pork was tender and moist, the collard greens were perfectly cooked. The coleslaw was vinegar based instead of mayonnaise, and was very good. The banana pudding definitely tasted homemade instead of the fake banana flavor. While the flavor was good and they were cooked well, the wings were quite small. All of the sauces we tried were absolutely delicious! All of us were licking it off our plates. I would definitely eat here again! *the green beans in my picture were my own. :) read more

Congratulations Smokehouse BBQ! You have made my list of bad BBQ in Alabama. Before I list the reasons why you deserve this honor, I will give you some credit where credit is due. What I did like about Smokehouse BBQ was: 1. Never had potato salad like yours! No mustard in it at all. Seemed to be made straight from a baked potato and maybe some mayo or some kind of cream mixed in it to hold it together. And some red onion and spices added to it, made it a very good, unique potato salad. 2. The cole slaw was an in-between of crunchy and creamy because of the mayo and apple cider that my waitress told me was added to it. 3. Honey BBQ sauce was very good and I appreciate my waitress giving me an extra one, free of charge. (more on that in a moment) 4. Large portions! 5. Sweet tea was really good. Now the reasons why you deserve to be on the list of bad BBQ in Alabama. 1. All the meat was too dry, especially the pork and chicken. The sauces did not help the pork and chicken. The one rib I had was ok but also more on the dry side. It seemed like to have a good rub on it, but was more bone than meat. The turkey, which looked like lunch meat, was actually the best of the lot. It tasted better than it looked. They didn't include the brisket with the meat sampler I ordered. If the rest of it was dry, I can't imagine how bad the brisket was. 2. Charging for extra sauce....even if you dine in! They have 3 sauces. I ordered their meat sampler to get a taste of it all, and they give one small cup of sauce. They have 3 flavors, which you get to choose one for free. If you want a taste of the other 2, you have to pony up and extra $.50 for the small cup they give you. Out of all the things a BBQ joint can do, nothing makes me want to rate it low more than charging for extra BBQ sauce. I asked the waitress why they charge for extra BBQ sauce? Her explanation was because people have stolen BBQ sauce and containers off the table before. So that means the rest of us have to suffer and pay for the BBQ sauce, which by the way, isn't made in-house. She didn't tell me what the original flavor is and by this time, I was too irritated to try to guess which sauce it was from the grocery store. It was a mild ketchup base and if I have to make a guess, it was Cattlemen's. At least with the honey one, the waitress said they added honey and 7 other spices. The waitress must have liked me to give me an extra one free of charge to take with me. 3. The hot BBQ sauce was more hot sauce than BBQ sauce. It wasn't the worst I've ever had and there were some things I liked about it. But the most important reasons I go to a BBQ joint are for the meat and sauces, and Smokehouse failed at both of them. The potato salad was approved by everyone including my 11 month granddaughter. The staff was friendly, quick and efficient. Don't forget to leave room for dessert and try the banana pudding. Ok what happened to this place? I tried this place a couple of years back and it was quite good. Now? It's AWFUL. I got pulled pork. Fatty, gross, and greasy and some of the worst bbq I have ever had. I got smoked chicken. Very dry and average at best. And I got a slab of ribs. These were THE WORST ribs I have ever tasted in my life. The sides? The baked beans were ok. The slaw was below average at best and probably the worst slaw I have ever eaten. Will I be back or suggest my friends try this place? NO. Absolutely not. Nada. My forecast? Sadly, unless someone makes drastic changes for the better I don't see this place being in business--as it is now---within a year from now. There were no customers there like the last time I tried it a couple of years ago. And it was high noon. I can see why! read more

Great local place, meat and 3's on Sunday's are good and the BBQ has good smoke flavor with your choice of several sauces ( I like the combo of the Hot and Centerville Orig) The staff is very friendly, make you feel at home and works hard, sometimes overwhelmed due to crowd but they push thru and get job done. Well it pains me to write this but I have visited twice in the last ten days and both times were just sort of ok at best. The pulled pork was average and they charge extra for small cups of sauce while food and drink are served in styrofoam when dining in. What is wrong with leaving bottles of sauce on the table? The onion rings were the high point. Crisp and delicious. The BBQ beans were decent but in years past the beans had pieces of pork mixed in making them unique and tasty. The cole slaw was dry and tasteless. Had the chocolate cookie for desert and it was dry and average. In days past the cookies were huge, thin, and almost dripping with butter. The servers are always friendly. After coming here for the last twenty years whenever I passed through Montgomery, I think I have visited for the last time. read more

STEAK NIGHT---Worst meal EVER!! They were short handed but still filled the place up and the wait staff was completely over-whelmed. Then it took nearly an hour to get our food. The potatoes were hot, the steaks were cold and over cooked. My guess is that someone did not come in early and prep the potatoes and salad. The steak was so cold and tough that I could not cut it (and we didn't even get steak knives, so that's a big part of the problem). As I have repeated, ad nauseam, I believe the the best way to judge a barbecue joint is by its BBQ plate. Barbecue is pulled pork, not ribs, brisket, and certainly not grilled/baked/smoked chicken with sauce dumped on it. A barbecue plate presents the two most important elements, the meat and the sauce, unhindered and standing alone on its merits. secondarily, the barbecue baked beans or an indicator of how much the restaurant really cares about its food. Just ask David Scott what it takes to make really fantastic baked beans*. It's a lot more than opening a can and tossing in bacon and peppers. It's relatively easy to find good pulled pork. All you have to do is cook it properly, pull it at the time of service and don't let it sit in a warmer drawer. Good sauce is a bit more difficult to find, but it's also more a matter of taste. One of my favorite sauces is cheap bottled Bullseye Memphis Hot. I've seen people rave on here about sauce I consider to be absolute garbage and even attempt espouse a claim that the white pepper mayonnaise gunk concocted in north Alabama** is actually BBQ Sauce.*** BBQ Beans, however, are almost universally phoned-in but when they're not it's usually special. So for those of you still with me after that diatribe here is my review of Smokehouse Pit BBQ: The Meat: It's perfect; tender, flavorful, smoky, and freshly prepared. The Sauce(s): Jack of all trades master of none. If you try to please everyone you'll end up placing no one. Smokehouse is the exception that proves the rule. They actually present five very good sauces and a bottle of pepper mayonnaise for every table. I personally thought the Mother of all Sauces was the best. I did keep dipping into their Centreville sauce out of nostalgia since it is a near perfect rendition of the Old Twix n Tween sauce. They were all good in their own way. I didn't try the mayonnaise though, I'm hoping one of our vegetarian friends will try it on their chicken**** and let us know how it is. The Beans: After all the blather above you know I consider these to be important. These beans, wow. They are absolutely delicious. Meaty, spicy, and infused with the flavors of their house made sauce. They are true indicator of how the folks at Smokehouse really care about their food. All in all, Smokehouse was a great experience. The service was fantastic as was the food and atmosphere. I'm so happy to welcome back one of the River Region's top barbecue restaurants! *Destin Connection Seafood Market Has the best BBQ baked beans I've ever had. Food is great. That's the only positive thing I can say. The inside is closed so everyone is sitting nut to butt on the patio (social distancing at its best). They won't sell you alcohol at the window and there's only ONE server for the entire patio that can bring you alcohol. Draft is down too so get used to bottles. And the flies. OH MY GOD THE FLIES. Solid 3 stars maybe even 3.5. This is a nice local BBQ joint. Their BBQ is tasty but I really enjoy their ribs. On the downside, their wings are wimpy...as in tiny. The wings are dry too. I wouldn't recommend. I tried one of their burgers today and my suggestion is to stick to the BBQ. Burger had zero flavor(seasoning) and appeared to be one of those frozen Bubba Burgers (not sure). I had heard so many great things about Smokehouse BBQ so of course, I had to try it. In fact, I had to try it twice. My first trip was my husband, our two teenagers, and myself. After waiting approximately 20 minutes just to place our order, then another 30 minutes for our meals, just to have 3 of the 4 meals wrong and the quality of the food was a total let down. When I was finally able to get the severs attention and politely explained my displeasure with the entire visit, she looked at me and simply stated that she had noticed that the standards had been lowered also and that she would not even take her own family in. My second visit, went a bit smoother. The service was great, dinners all arrived in a timely fashion, however, none of the side items were fresh, they were quite dry. I was excited when I got here today. I have eaten here many times in the past and it was always some of the best Q around. I'm not a snob by any means but the meal was served to me in a to go box. Not a huge deal if the food is good, if. It wasn't as good as I remembered. The Q was average, not bad not life changing. I didn't taste any smoke, but I may have been served inside meat. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The meat was moist and tender, but without the sauce the meat was bland. Again, it may have been inside meat and smoke doesn't get that deep. The mild sauce was very good and I did not like the hot sauce. The beans were delicious and the potato salad was good. The server was very nice and service was good. Will I come back?? Probably not. Delicious burgers! No fast food here. The onion rings are good--a little sweet with a little crunch. The sweet potato fries are also delicious. My husband and I eat here every time we come to the Millbrook area. In the past year or so, they have only offered a walk-up window and tables outside (since the restaurant burned). We visited this past Saturday, and they now have a full service dining room. It was a little slow, as there was only one lady working the whole room, but we weren't in a hurry. Granted, it's not the best hamburger I've ever eaten, but it's near the top of the list. I've never even tried the BBQ. Maybe next time.... read more

After deciding to come to the walk-up window to order, mind you it's 49 degrees, I watch as people walk past me back and forth. Seeing as to how cold it is & the obvious disregard for a customer (me) not being acknowledged by even a "just a moment", I decide to go back to my car and leave instead of staring into a closed window. My 5yo really wanted his burger so I called in to order...no hesitation on answering the phone or placing my order We eat here all the time for over 10 years..I hope this never happens again or my business or anyone else I know will be coming.
