The 200-foot long covered "Market Alley" is sandwiched between the three-story Market Building (commercial and retail space), the Gordon Lofts Apartments (retail facing the Market Alley) and the Gordon Hotel at the opposite end of the Alley (across from the original 5th Street Public Market area). The Market Alley section was uncrowded while I visited with a friend, even though the original Market area was packed. We were on the lookout for certain Pendleton products, so it was a good excuse to checkout the area while there. As a plus, Heritage Distilling Co. was offering free tastings. I was already familiar with their Dual Barrel (Vanilla) Bourbon Whiskey...the night before experimenting with various whiskeys and liquors mixed with eggnog...yes, whiskey goes great with eggnog! And you thought science wasn't fun ;-) It was nice to sample some of Heritage Distilling Co's other high quality spirits...all very good! So if you haven't been down to the Market Alley, I do recommend a visit.

The people at the door or some of the rudest people I have ever met. They have non-licensed people doing security tasks, and they have been reported to the state as being in violation. When you finally find a way to look at what is there without paying you see that it is all trash. Nobody would pay the admission charge if they knew what was in there. The place smells horribly, and it's not from the animals that are there during the fair. People were smoking cigarettes by the doors, less than 10 feet away, another violation of state law. But not only is there great selection, you can feel very safe there. Very friendly people at the gate and inside at the customer service counter, got a question, they most like have an answer. In years past I use to have a booth there and there gave the best in service to their vendors. Today, I was able to purchase a variety of oddities. On my way out I just had to thank the wonderful people at the service desk and wow, they were so appreciatiove, you can tell, they care about the event.
