Realising that cafes open at 10am in Hong Kong, several hours after I wake up, I thought I'd walk to the nearest hipster cafe and buy some beans for the duration of my trip to stave off the addiction. No trouble right? After all Sheung Wan is supposed to be hipster and cool and constituted mostly of antique shops and minimalist Swedish cafes.
I tried Lof10 and Po's Atelier and neither was selling beans. I passed Just Coffee on the way there, but it wasn't yet highly rated so gave it a miss.
Returning, I thought why not ask them. Are they selling coffee beans? They will, eventually, but for now, the barista asked me how much I wanted, measured out 120g for 5 days, ground it for me, and since he didn't have an appropriate container, grabbed an empty bag and put it in it, charging me the same % of the 1kg bag price as I had taken in weight.
This is what I call service. Of course they were very nice people too and basically guaranteed that should I need further caffeination after 10am, they'll be my first port of call.
Bonus: the place is now called "Just Cafe HIPSTER". Yes, in bold yellow capital letters (with serif - sans fonts are so 2000s), it's in front (see photo) and also on their business cards (see other photo). You can't miss it. So, after whining about them on Yelp for over a year I have finally been to a bona fide hipster cafe. read more
