Yes the staff is nice at the WC office, BUT the program is very pricey! and you're stuck in a 3 month contract before you can cancel. I joined this place exclusively for the newest medication on the market which they said they had and advertised. However after signing my life away and having my initial appointment, I was told I had to wait until Week 2 to meet with the clinician to get the prescription. Then on Week 2 the Clinician tells me, oh that med is back ordered and won't be here for 2 weeks. So I'm in the program for almost a month before I can get the medication assistance, which is More Money. They push their vitamins on you and their shots, for more money. I'm sure these extras help, but if you bought everything they mentioned to aid in your weightloss journey, you'd be paying over $600 a month, especially if you don't have insurance (like me). When it came time to refill the prescription, once again it was out of stock and won't be here for a month! I just feel like they should give a discount on the program if they cannot fulfill the offers. Or try a different pharmacy! Granted, I did lose weight following their program and on the meds, it's a great program that's why I gave it 3 stars, but the red tape to get there was infuriating and if I wasn't stuck in the contract, I would have left and gone elsewhere. With their help I was finally able to understand how my body processes food and why certain foods create problems for me. Staffed by nice people who don't really know what they are doing. You get very little instruction on what to do for the first few weeks. It's really just up to you to starve yourself, and you pay a small fortune to go here. Don't bother buying their vitamins or getting shots. The only thing that helps is the prescription for phentermine which is an appetite suppressant. I'd recommend just getting it from your doctor and buy meal replacement shakes online, eat as little as you can, no carbs or sugar, and you'll drop 30 pounds by just a few months or less. You are better off doing weight watchers and cutting out refined carbs. This program is extremely expensive ($388/month) and claims to be very personalized. I was very successful on the program, that's because of the work that I put in. You just don't get what you pay for here. You see a different practitioner every week (it's very random) - some of them are very good - and others are not (chomping on bubblegum/doing their hair/and not trying to make any sincere connection with the customer). There's an online portal - but it takes a few days after weigh-in for your weight be uploaded. I even had to call several times because it seems like they forgot to update My record. For people who like to view their progress immediately and in charts, The turnaround time is unacceptable particularly again for the monthly fee that you pay. There's also no discount if you choose not to do the injections. I fail to see any personalization to this program. I am really disappointed because I wanted to like the program and would have continued to pay - but it just feels like 'amateur hour' and I refuse to be taken advantage of. read more

It's hard for me to give a rating, because I think this program will really work for some people, it just didn't work for me. Before I joined I read everything on yelp, so I'm just going to describe my experience as best I can to help other yelpers. The initial visit is $250, but you can get a $50 off coupon code online. At that visit they take your measurements, body fat, weight, and go over the program in detail. They also give you a full blood test form to take to Quest. This is included in the price and for me was one of the best parts. I have put on 10 pounds in the last 6 months so I was glad to see I'm perfectly healthy, especially cholesterol and diabetes. Then the fee is $400 per month. The weekly 15 minute appts are for you to get your amino acid shot and your appetite suppressants. I met with 3 different people over the month I was a member. 2 could have cared less about how I was doing, rushed me in, gave me a shot, put on the scale, BYE. Only the new nurse practitioner Peggy genuinely wanted to know how I was doing and encouraged me. The entire program is based on ketosis, the burning of body fat. They explain that you can't burn fat if you are eating carbs because it is easier for your body to burn the carbs. So basically the program is very, very low carb, and overall calorie reduction something on the order of 1200 calories less that you burn in an average day. They give you a booklet with boxes to check off as you eat, and show you exactly how much protein and carbs are in everything you eat. If you eat one protein serving you check a box. A serving is 3oz of chicken or half of a greek yogurt, for example. You get 10 protein boxes a day. You get 4 carb boxes a day. A carb box is 3/4 cups of berries for instance. My first problem with the program is that I don't like meat and seafood. I eat of ton of veggies and fruits, whole grain bread and oatmeal, most of which are off limits on the program, or only two boxes a day. Absolutely no pasta, potatoes, oatmeal, bread, starchy vegetables, beer, etc. So I basically ate tofu, egg whites, string cheese, greek yogurt, and the 2 cups of spinach with a tiny bit of cheese and beans, for 3 weeks. Snacks were 10 almonds or a string cheese. I just couldn't keep that up. I was also soooo tired of thinking about what I could, when can I get to whole foods for the tofu pasta, when can I go have a happy hour drink again, etc. In week four I started making my own modifications. Second problem was that it didn't matter when I took the appetite suppressants, they kept me up at night. By week four I was taking one in the morning and then a sleeping pill to get to sleep otherwise I was wide awake at 1am, needing to be up at 6am for work. NOT a good cycle. Another problem, this restriction resulted in one pound lost per week, not fabulous, I've done better on my own. So in week four it dawned on me that there was no reason for me to be paying $400 per month. I couldn't take the pills anymore, I couldn't stick to that strict diet, and honestly didn't want to. I provided my cancellation in writing and they sent me an email acknowledgement a few hours later. If you have no problem eating a lot of meat and very small amounts of food then this program really will work. My goal was 18 pounds, I bet if you had 30+ to lose you'd do better and be more motivated. Even though it didn't work for me, I did learn a lot about nutrition, which was worth it for me. I had no idea that some of the veggies I was chowing on were super carby. I do intend to apply what I learned, and just get my butt back to the gym. read more

I started Jumpstart March 21, 2013. I've been overweight since I was 18, I'm 55 now. I found this to be the best diet I've ever been on. low carb diets have always been referred to me by doctors before but I could not last more than 3 weeks on them due to a lot of fatigue. This gives you more carbs than the typical low carb diet. You eat real food, not pre-packaged food. They also have great high protein, high fiber bars and with lower carbs, you need the extra fiber. The Pleasanton clinic helps me with any problems I have that week. low carbs actually takes your hunger away. When I feel tired, they told me to drink chicken broth for the salt that you are not getting from the diet. It worked well. I've lost 22 lbs in 6 weeks and know I will reach my goal this time for the first time in 30 years of dieting. Well worth the money. Way to go Jumpstart! Terri read more

I lost weight...not denying that. After consistently losing 2-3+ lbs per week, week after week, I was chewed out for losing only 2 tenths of a pound during one weigh in. The counselor/nurse practitioner had a bad attitude and wanted to know "what happened?!", assuming I went off-diet/meds and pigged out for the week. Excuse me?! I'm the professional dieter here, give some respect!! She was very condescending to me. I quit the program shortly after that session. Happy to report, that by using the Atkins principles (which is exactly what the Jumpstart diet is...only repackaged and costs you close to $400 a month), I have lost over 50 lbs and kept it off for 3 years so far. The Jumpstart MD program is not worth it. Atkins is free online and has gobs of support, recipes & social forums. Jumpstart MD does not. read more

I was a member about a year ago and quit because there were horrible inconsistencies with staff and the clinician rubbed me the wrong way. I DID like the program itself, and DID lose weight, so I decided to go back. I have held off on writing this review until I have had a few visits under my belt. Here we go.. Negatives: It is nearly impossible to get a hold of someone. The phone takes you in a loop, or to a voicemail that does not allow you to leave a message. I have been told that this is being fixed. I have been over charged on several occasions, and although they recognized this right away, it takes FOREVER to get it cleared up. They are frequently out of popular supplements. I noticed that I have received some conflicting advice regarding the amounts of certain foods that I should have. Positives: I did not recognize the receptionist, but she was pleasant and welcoming. I think her name is Michelle (I make it a point to remember people's names). She answered all of my questions and was quite sweet. Bobby has welcomed me several times too. She reminds me of my daughter which warms my heart. On my 2nd visit, I was told I would see Karla, the clinician (uh oh, yet another new person). Out comes a cute, petite gal that looked young enough to be my daughter. I wanted to leave, but thought she already saw me, so let's do this. She introduced herself and within a few minutes, I felt better. It turns out that she is older than she looks and truly related to my struggles. She looked over my blood work with me and explained everything in detail. I have never had anyone be so thorough. She suggested I make some changes to my medications and recommended some new ones. I have to admit, I was doubtful. I took her notes to my personal doctor. He researched her suggestions, called me to say that he was impressed with her insight and agreed to do as Karla suggested! Wow! Since then, I have seen a few health coaches and they have been AMAZING! I believe i saw Michelle, Sophia and Julia. All great and all familiar faces from last year! They all have different approaches, but inspire me and keep me on track. I am so glad I returned. I am very happy to have people who understand me. Most of all, I am appreciative of their knowledge and the fact that there is consistent staff! This review is a reflection of MY experience; your mileage may vary. Why am I posting it? Because I want any 50+ year old, overweight women, to be aware and urge you to take control of your own experience. Does this program work? Yes, in spite of the people managing it. Did I almost die as a result of the program? Yep. Me: 56 years old, overweight by 40+ pounds. After blood work was taken, I was told my thyroid and female hormones were all under performing. Upsell to using their Dr to prescribe female hormones (called "the safe ones") and thyroid. Pushed to have hormones injected under the skin, which I refused in favor of pills, "in case there is a problem." Note all of this for later. Results were felt within 2 weeks -- felt better, more energy, etc. Never saw the only Doctor again (for + months.) Saw 3 different 'coaches' during my time in Walnut Creek. One injected me badly and a bump/bruise arose for more than a year before subsiding. I was prescribed different exercises by each coach, with each coach telling me what the other coach prescribed was "wrong for you." Each visit, I had to re-explain my situation, despite a "chart" and the "personalization" that is part of the sales pitch. Had to follow up requests for weeks at a time. Blah, blah -- all of this is just bad office management. When my lower leg swelled to twice its normal size, I was told it was water retention and not to worry. Time passed. After leg became painful, I went to my doctor, then ultrasound, then ER, then ICU due to a DVT blocking more than 90% of my femoral artery. Cause: My age, weight, and lifestyle (very long commute equaling 5 hours/day in car) made me high risk for any type of hormone replacement. Cause of DVT: female hormones. Am I partially responsible? Yep; free will, I could have rejected many of the Jumpstart MD recommendations. Why didn't I? I bought the marketing and the high pressure sales tactics. Jumpstart MD works. The Walnut Creek office is broken and I was never contacted by the owner of the franchise or whomever is responsible for WC, despite multiple verbal and written requests. I hear great things about other offices, and some people may not care that they're having a bad customer service experience. But beware assuming that because the business has "MD" in the title and that if you buy the 'medical' program, you will only see an Endocrinologist infrequently, a Nurse Practitioner occasionally, and this is patently NOT a safe medical program. It's a Keto Diet with in some cases unhelpful or contradictory "coaching." For me, almost dying was problematic. And the lasting impact of blood thinners (for 6 months), my DVT not going away (probably forever), and the delay of knee replacement surgery (indefinite) wasn't worth the weight loss. read more

In 6 months, I lost 58 pounds easily, just by following the carb and protein plan set up at my initial visit, and walking a few miles 3 days a week. I can't believe how quickly it happened, and wish I had started years ago. Update to my prior review: last year my daughter used the program. After six weeks, she decided she could do it on her own and told them she would not be returning. Jumpstart kept charging us even after I contacted them; after two conversations and a promise about speaking to a supervisor, I never heard from them again (no, I was not verbally abusive and did not behave in any other way that would justify them not dealing with me.) I kept calling and messaging them and kept being ghosted for several weeks. I eventually took the issue up with my credit card company and after two months during which Jumpstart fought the credit card company, I finally won. June 6, 2013 Jump Start Weight Loss Program........ a perfect 10. Paula Jeha a client of mine and a friend, introduced me to the program. I was 186 pds. over weight and on medication for blood pressure and cholesterol. I was on the medication preidonse for a couple of years, it made me balloon up to 186 pds. Paula introduced me to the program based upon it results. So after trying to lose weight by numerous other methods, pills, diets, working out at the gym with a private trainer I was still still over weight. Nothing seemed to work until I started JUMP START. What a great program. I started the program and before I new it for the first time I was actually losing weight. The program has a great support team, everything made sense to me They showed me how to change my diet and achieve my weight goals. I now weight 158 as of this morning (6/6/2013); I am off medication and doing great things with riding and showing my horses. I have been able to stop taking medication and my medical doctor ran new blood test to check my cholesterol I got good results for the first time in many years. You get a pretty clear picture from these reviews--this program is inconsistent yet can prove very helpful. One strong positive is Jumpstart's use of medical tests. The testing illustrates how much your overall health improves with every few pounds of weight loss. Another positive--the counseling staff I saw was helpful, personable and either well-trained in nutrition or they hold a degree in the field. I continue to benefit from their knowledge and support. But the negatives that eventually drove me away reflect the overall organization which, bottom line, is aimed at generating income, not practicing medicine. The clinician, whom I believe is required to be a physician's assistant at Jumpstart's sites, performs not only as the medical staff member licensed to prescribe medication, but also plays the role of "closer." On the first occasion I viewed the clinician's "offer" as coming from a medical professional who was helping me move forward. But on the second occasion I suddenly got a different picture. A medically unsound suggestion (in my case) was accompanied by a medically unethical statement. This was not the help of a medical professional--this was more along the lines of a car salesman's manager swooping in to close the sale. I left the program. read more

I worked with the Walnut Creek Jumpstart office for 30 days. I initially found their food tracking methodology confusing and inaccurate. I was told they were coming out with a newer version but never saw it. When I asked for specific suggestions on foods I could eat I was told they didn't have that because everyone was so different. Even worse, one clinician in particular shamed me for portion size--she was not respectful or sensitive. When I tried to talk this through with her she didn't listen, she got defensive and hostile. However some of the people I met were good to work with...but it only takes one bad attitude to sour the experience. I wouldn't say I found their program special or particularly helpful....I don't recommend it--I am now using an app on my phone...its working well. They never asked me for my blood work when I forgot to bring it in initially and there was no follow up. Good thing I didn't have any health issues! I have been an on and off again patient at Jumpstart for the last two years. My opinion of the program is it can work for some, maybe not for others. I lost some weight, but found the program too limiting, as it is a program which is primarily focused on little to no carbs. It is also VERY VERY EXPENSIVE!! It is a very restrictive diet, which of course will help you lose weight, as any program will that restricts your caloric intake to almost nothing.;-) The receptionist at the Walnut Creek office, Lory, is very curt and not very friendly.
