Thankfully my dark thoughts were far off the mark! The pub looked so nice, the barmaid was so helpful and their beers were in such good condition (from Doom Bar, Tribute and Betty Stogs I had the last two and was much impressed) that my concern was soon alleviated. While they obviously set their stall by their food, those hoping to have a good pint in a proper Cornish country pub with a roaring fire should not be disappointed! I can forgive the minor name change. Its better than the other way round where pubs deliberately add the ye olde in an attempt to be more olde!

The food was exceptional. Two of us had the chicken which was a special, my husband had the fish special and our friend had the pork belly. All were outstanding . The service was excellent. It was definitely a "10". We are from the States so finding a restaurant of this quality in Cornwall means so much to us. We plan to return to this area and Plough will be on our list of places to have . I am in the food industry and therefore can be quite fussy but I was so impressed. The manager that sat down with us to tell us about the history of the building, the impressive vegetarian menu and just the general ambience of the place. We chose to eat here for two reasons: 1 - the menus are written outside on chalkboards near the road. That way you can see what's being served without going in to ask for a menu. This is very good for us because as vegetarians, we've had to leave restaurants before if they don't have veggie options. 2 - it was one of the few places open. Just a friendly tip--don't go on holiday in November. Everything is frickin' shut. A lesson we learned the hard way! Anyhow, the Crumplehorn had it's doors open and we were lucky to have gone in. This place was one of the highlights of our Cornwall holiday. A must if you're visiting Polperro or Looe.

Anyone who complains about lack of elevators and other modern accoutrements miss the point entirely. We loved this place. The employees were all pleasant and seriously helpful. The location is a short walk from downtown but on a quiet corner away from noisy crowds. Our room was comfortable with all expected amenities. The continental breakfast was fabulous with eggs, bacon, ham, and salmon cooked to order. Coffee and tea were piping hot and unlimited. The bartender/hotel manager was a very pleasant fellow named Gary who was more than willing to lend a hand or offer pertinent information or directions with a smile. On Tuesday and Thursday nights local musicians gather and play traditional English folk music. Free! And they are quite good. The bar and lounge are pretty much like they have been for hundreds of years and literally ooze with tradition. Great place to sip a beer or nurse a gin and tonic. Terrific place to stay. So glad we chose them. Great job folks. Now, if we can only figure out the name of that French ship that was captured during the Battle of Trafalgar and lent one of it's beams that now sits overhead at the bar.

When we enquired about having dinner, the bar staff went to check and then took us into a room immediately behind the bar. It was a lovely room where we had a corner table. There was a door leading to, I presumed, the conservatory dining area and the gardens beyond. The menu was printed on an A4 sized paper back to back. There was actually a lot of choice. For a bistro, I feel the prices were a little on the high side, but reasonably priced as a normal restaurant. Our meal was fresh and well cooked, and the service was prompt and pleasant and friendly.
