Cracking pub well worth a detour. Perfect pint and tons of history like the slate cottages at the rear.

Cannot believe how good the food was!…read more I'm in Rock on business for a few weeks, so me and a colleague are doing the rounds and trying out all the local bars, pubs and restaurants, and this place is by far the best. The food was extremely well priced for the quality, and was presented very professionally. We both has the Warne's Slider Burgers and they are possibly the best I have ever eaten. It's hidden round the back of the cinema in Wadebridge, so if you're in that neck of the woods you absolutely, must, most definitely go there. Also, have the Key Lime Pie for desert. You won't regret it.

Inside there are few tables downstairs adjacent to the well-stocked bar, as well as sizeable area upstairs. We sat downstairs on the four occasions we visited, the restaurant has a great atmosphere, the staff are friendly and efficient, nothing is too much trouble. The menu has a varied selection of dishes, from steaks and burgers, to salads and pasta. Obviously visiting on so many occasions, between us we tried a wide variety of the dishes, not a bad one amongst them, but the Sea Bass with asparagus, tomatoes and warm crab mashed potato was an absolute triumph! The desserts were equally impressive, with the ever present staples of Sticky Toffee pudding and Chocolate Brownie sundaes, wonderful. Again the pick of the dishes for me was the Lemon Posset with warm blueberry compote, served in a Kilner Jar, with Honeycomb Ice Cream, a heavenly dessert. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough, food is rarely this good!

Finding it was a challenge, since my GPS did not seem to understand my instructions, and it's at the end of a series of very narrow "B" roads that mostly only accommodate one car a time. But once you're there, it's well worth the hassle of finding it. With only 8 rooms, each guest is recognized by name by the staff and treated like family. Nothing is a problem for Richard (the manager) and his friendly crew. For example, we had some car problems and realized we would be arriving around midnight on the day we were due to check in, and the staff usually leaves by 10:30pm. I phoned the hotel, and Sam, the night manager arranged to leave a back door open, with our room key easily findable. He also gave me detailed directions to find the hotel and where to park. The room was relatively spacious, compared to some of the shoeboxes we've stayed in before. It was clean, well-appointed, and featured a modern bathroom with a bath, shower, and plenty of hot water. The floor was newly-carpeted and had a slight camber to it, no doubt the result of decades of damp sea air distorting the floorboards. Although it made walking around the room a little disconcerting, it seemed to add to the rustic charm. The window opened onto a gorgeous vista overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with a rocky cove below where the waves crashed ceaselessly, soothing us to sleep each night. Breakfast was included in the room rate, consisting of fresh juice, fruit, cereal, pastries, and a full selection of traditional English cooked items. We were well-fed each morning. The lunch and dinner menus featured a wide variety of delicacies that were worthy of any 5-star restaurant. Very satisfying. Seating options for dining (or just relaxing) included comfy lounge chairs arrayed near fireplaces, chairs and tables in a glassed-in conservatory, or trestle-benches outdoors on a patio. In all cases, there's a view of the cove and crashing waves. A coastal path affords a way to get closer to the sea, down a slippery set of stone steps that require careful navigation. Once down below, the full majesty of the waves can be enjoyed close-up. Some caveats -- parking at the hotel requires some automotive gymnastics to negotiate a tight bend from the roadway into the parking area. The smaller the car you're driving, the better off you'll be! Also, there's no cellphone signal to be found, but luckily the hotel provides free wifi. If you're travelling with others, consider equipping everyone with a compact walkie-talkie if you plan to explore separately. For us, the best part of staying at The Port William Hotel was the cheerful helpfulness of the staff. Due to the car issues we were having, we had to delay our checkout past the usual 10:30am. However, Richard said "Don't worry about it" and allowed us to stay until 1:30pm with no extra charge. Very accommodating! Bottom line -- The Port William Inn represents great value for money and is a wonderful example of high-quality hospitality. We will definitely stay there again.

Anyone who complains about lack of elevators and other modern accoutrements miss the point entirely. We loved this place. The employees were all pleasant and seriously helpful. The location is a short walk from downtown but on a quiet corner away from noisy crowds. Our room was comfortable with all expected amenities. The continental breakfast was fabulous with eggs, bacon, ham, and salmon cooked to order. Coffee and tea were piping hot and unlimited. The bartender/hotel manager was a very pleasant fellow named Gary who was more than willing to lend a hand or offer pertinent information or directions with a smile. On Tuesday and Thursday nights local musicians gather and play traditional English folk music. Free! And they are quite good. The bar and lounge are pretty much like they have been for hundreds of years and literally ooze with tradition. Great place to sip a beer or nurse a gin and tonic. Terrific place to stay. So glad we chose them. Great job folks. Now, if we can only figure out the name of that French ship that was captured during the Battle of Trafalgar and lent one of it's beams that now sits overhead at the bar.

Our cottage in Chulmleigh had a brief paragraph about the Masons Arms and mentioned it was Michelin's 2010 Pub of the Year. Off we went. Stopped by in the afternoon to make reservations for that evening. Enjoyed a nice Cotleigh Tawny bitter while we perused the menu ahead of time. We were delighted with our options from starter to dessert. Couldn't wait for the evening! We arrived for dinner and ordered a drink at the bar. The place is very cozy and staff professional - smiles all around. They are all happy to be there and it really makes the place enjoyable. The Masons Arms was one of my favorite dinner experiences ever. We were brought into a comfy side room with our drinks and handed the menus to review while we munched on complimentary olives, etc. A few minutes later we placed our orders and were left to conversation - which was essentially wondering what would be happening next. The waitress came back and brought us to our little table along the window - where our wine and starter were brought almost as soon as we sat down. Interesting and effective way to do things. Is that common over in the UK? Who cares! Starters: I had the smoked haddock leek and potato soup and she had the chicken liver parfait with chili jam and brioche toast. Both were just sooo astonishingly good. Main: I had the John Dory with clams, butter beans and chive ravioli. Delicious but I think I liked her prosciutto-wrapped monkfish loin with creamed potato in an orange/balsamic sauce. We couldn't stop talking about how good they were. Dessert: We ordered the roasted pineapple pannacotta and the special - chocolate ganache with lime jelly. Both were good and a great end to a great meal. I am not big on sweets but a good dark chocolate hits the spot every time - and the special was really nice. The triangles of lime jelly were a pleasant and delicious surprise, as I didn't think I would care for them. Overall - great meal. Great meal worth every penny - on the high side but well worth it. Of course, we might have gone overboard but it was our holiday! Service was excellent - not one of those places where staff comes by so often it's annoying. They were attentive at just the right times. I will certainly be back should I ever venture anywhere near the Masons Arms again. Great job Mark, Sarah and staff!
