They cook them in beef tallow which for me is a bonus cause that adds a lot of flavour. However I noticed a difference between the regular fries vs the frites. The frites were much better. "Nice-ish" in the sense that you may want to spring for something a little more elegant for Valentine's Day or an anniversary, but perfect for a casual birthday or career celebration. When I went, J's offered a $60 pre-fixe menu consisting of a 10 oz. steak, a salad, and their biggest sell: unlimited fries. For what you get, $60 is a really good deal (especially if you LOVE fries). The steak and salad were good. Nothing to write home about, but definitely no slouch either. I asked for my steak medium rare and they cooked it to perfection. The salad was nice and light - the perfect compliment to the steak and fries. Now... the fries. I cannot overstate this: it reminded me of McDonald's. The consistency, form factor, and taste is VERY reminiscent of McDonald's. If you're not a fan of McDonald's, you should think twice. Personally, I love it, and helping after helping of the fries was a very nice treat. Even better, our server was very attentive and replenished my fries supply in a timely basis. They are never in your face, but can pick up on the slightest nuance to ensure that you're doing the experiences. Nothing short of perfect.J is busy, ensuring that all the restaurant patrons are well looked after. The mixed green salad is a must. Their house dressing is a perfect balance of flavours without taking away from the intention of the salad. The candy walnuts at a very nice lift to this entire dish. Again, without being in your face, the wait staff, will discreetly come to your table with a stainless steel dish, full of frites, followed quickly by yours teak, done to perfection. The finishing touch of fleur de sel on the steak, makes it so French. This was not lost on either my partner or myself. Moving onto the desserts we did not know that J's wife was a pastry chef, and made all the desserts. Their presentation was outstanding as was their taste. They were neither heavy nor imposing, but rather delicately, sweet and full of flavor, to make the end of the meal most spectacular. While, this is not a cheap place to go for food, you certainly get the value in the quality in the professionalism of the staff, along with incredibly high-grade products. TLDR: In all my years reviewing food this was the worst service I have ever received. Would give 0/5 stars if I can. I came here for my birthday with some friends, they were all gonna order the steak special and I was gonna order the cake and drinks. I could not eat an entire 10oz steak but I was being forced to pay for it. Waiter told me "Maybe you can leave and come back when you are more hungry later today?". I was flabbergasted. Then we asked for the manager and he came and said "We need to cater for our other customers on our waitlist". Yet there were multiple empty seats around us. We left and each of us were charged a $30 fee even though they were the ones who refused to serve or cater to us. Not once did the restaurant consider to put the customers best interest first. All they cared about was money. I'd never return here nor would I ever recommend this place. If you want Steak and Frites, visit Jules Bistro just a 10min walk away. The salad was very very very citrusy which was too acidic for my stomach but the candied walnuts made up for it. The steak was perfectly cooked medium rare as requested and served with a targon sauce (can't remember). The steak was not warm when served and got cold pretty fast despite it being served on top of a plate over a candle. It was a bummer because even if slightly cold, it was definitely how I liked my steak and could only imagine if it was warm. Not sure if it was sitting out too long until it was served. J's Steak Frites located on Queen St W. near Gladstone Ave is a Parisian style steakhouse. The unique concept of this restaurant is that they only serve one main dish, steak frites, for a set price. For $49 (+ tax) per person, you get your choice of appetizer (daily soup or a candied walnut salad), steak (our steak was striploin that night), butter sauce, and unlimited fries. There is also bread and butter included in the meal as well. J's Steak Frites has daily desserts that may change which are an additional cost. There is also an extensive wine list as well as cocktails available. Seating time is 90 min where reservations are definitely recommended. I've actually been to the location of J's Steak Frites when the restaurant was Dandylion. The owners of J's Steak Frites have kept majority of the interior the same. The space is not large and there is seating for about ~30 customers. Washrooms are located in the basement and are not wheelchair accessible. I recently dined at J's Steak Frites on a Sat night and reserved a 5:45pm time. I was surprised that there was a line for customers to enter the restaurant when I arrived promptly. I did see on the restaurant's Instagram that night that they had walk-ins only, meaning that likely all reservations were booked. My husband and I were greeted and shown to our table. The server came by right away to let us know of the menu and gave us some time to decide our drink of choice. In regards to food, I opted for the salad and my husband got the daily soup (a mushroom veloute). Both items were tasty. The salad was perfectly coated with the right amount of dressing and the candied walnuts gave a slight sweetness to the dish. For the main attraction, we both asked for our steaks to be cooked medium rare, which both were when they arrived. The steak was delicious, tender and seasoned well. The portion of the steak was also not small, which will feed someone who is hungry. I expected the steaks to be executed well and they were. Firstly, we had the unfortunate pleasure of sitting by the door which was drafty and right by the communal coat hook. And because their front door is broken, your table will double as host as you get up to open the door for arriving guests who can't open it from the outside. The menu is fixed, and you are offered bread and butter, soup or salad, steak and fries, and dessert. On the day I went, they only had salad so we got that. The pieces of bread were so tiny, and there is enough butter for maybe two pieces. The steak was cooked perfectly and the butter sauce that comes with it is delicious. They should give this butter with the bread as well. The fries looked like McDonalds fries, but they were slightly better. The drinks were good. The servers walk around with trays of fries, offering them to you as they go around. Although the fries are all you can eat, they start you off with a large portion so we didn't need a second round of fries. The dessert was a very sweet honey cake and it came with some sprinkles that we could add on ourselves. It was cute and fun to decorate, but the cake was a bit too sweet. Our server was soft spoken and a little clumsy. I saw her dropping things at other tables. She let us sit with the menu for a while before taking our orders, even though everyone in the restaurant is ordering the same thing apart from drinks. I did notice another server ask if a customer wanted his jacket hung up on the racks, but everyone else in that area was sitting with their jackets. We also sat with our jackets on our chairs. Overall a decent experience with a few sticking points. The Good: As someone who hates having to choose off a menu, coming to a one dish restaurant like this is a great experience. I still have to choose a cocktail and a dessert but the appetizer and main are taken care of which is nice. The bread, salad and steak and frites are prepared wel and cooked to perfection how you like it. The service is the right level of attentive. Unlimited fries is a nice touch. They have a decent but accessible wine list. The desserts are hit or miss, I think it might be a matter of personal taste as I don't like overly rich sweet desserts but they did taste good and were well presented. I did have a pumpkin crème brûlée there that was amazing tho but I would be cautious with the cakes/mousses if your like me. The Not So Good: Mostly around restaurant policy and how it affects experience. They charge a fee for reservations now, a recent development. I get that bad people ruined reservations for everyone but I find their practice to be a little excessive. A flat 50/100 deposit would be reasonable, although I don't like it, however they have a deposit per head (50/person). I had a party of five and someone was sick and couldn't make it. Either I have to absorb the cost of the reservation deposit for their seat or be kind of a shitty person and ask them to pay me for missing the outing, which feels bad. I did ask for an exception and lucky they got someone to take the extra table left so she said they would waive it this time. However, I shouldn't have to do that in my opinion, deposits are to encourage people not to no show (especially large groups, not to penalize paying customers who haven't done anything wrong. Secondly, the enforced seating time of 2 hours makes for a bit of a rushed feeling with service. They get out the food quickly because it's all the same items going out, so more efficient for the kitchen, however it feels like the server sometimes is coming over and serving us a little to frequently to make sure we get enough fries, finish our win bottle and still have time to get through dessert and coffee. I am more understanding of this, you have other reservations to accommodate which makes sense, but I wish they put in a bit of grace time to make it a little more relaxed, even just 15 minutes between end of our seating and the start time of the next would make a large difference. read more

I'd requested my steak cooked medium rare, and it was indeed cooked perfectly. This is one amazing steak. Almost every mouthful was so tender and delicious, and the seasoning was right on point. There were a couple of bites with inedible fatty pieces, but mostly I enjoyed the heck out of this meal. (The fries were great, too.) I was pretty full but I couldn't resist trying their creme caramel for dessert and it was also terrific. Super creamy and loaded with burnt-caramel sauce, I pretty much inhaled this concoction. Who else thinks that when a restaurant has a small menu it usually means that they really excel at those few items? J's Steak Frites literally only has 1 option- steak frites. No other cuts of steak were offered except the one type of NY striploin (cooked however you wish) with house sauce and unlimited french fries for $49/pp. They give you the option of choosing a green salad or their soup of the day. When we went it was pumpkin soup (I think) and it was a bit on the thick side but decent. The salad was quite plain and the dressing wasn't that exciting. The only thing you choose with your meal besides the sides is how you want your steak cooked. We both had ours medium rare, and it was absolutely perfect. It was tender, juicy and flavorful and the house sauce was a perfect complement to everything from the meat to the fries. One of the co-owners is a Le Cordon Bleu trained pastry chef, which definitely explains why their desserts were so yummy. We chose the massive macaron with raspberry and lychee with whole raspberries and real chunks of lychee inside. The service was great, waitress was friendly. They check on you just at the right frequency and timing. We were checked on not just by our waitress, but also some other and at a couple occasions, by Jad himself, one of the co-owners. They all somehow managed to stop by at the right time, when there wasn't food in your mouth so you can actually respond to their questions. The feast started with house-made bread and butter and fresh green salad with lemon vinaigrette topped with candied walnut. The vinaigrette and candied walnut were impressive, I would come back just for these. Moving on, the main course itself. The steak is served sliced on this warming dish (it has tea light candle under), and the waitress will scoop up some french fries onto your plate. There is nothing special about the fries aside from it being unlimitedly available. The steak itself was juicy and tender, the flaky salt on top really adds to the whole mouthfeel. Oh and let's not for get the special secret butter sauce that comes with the steak. I've never thought it would be nice to dip steak in any sauce let alone thick creamy buttery sauce since it might ruin the steak's flavor, but this worked. Now, before coming here, I had read about their rotating dessert menu, and the latest one that caught my attention was their Baba au rum. They say look could be deceiving and I think this cake is the embodiment of that sentence. From the look itself one might think it's nothing spectacular but a golden cake with cream middle, BUT do cut into it and take a bite, you's find yourself slowly widening your eyes to the realization of how delicious and flavor-packed that each bite will be. We saw this place on tiktok and wanted to try it out for my mom's birthday. The menu had one item which was steak frites obviously and all you need to do is tell them how you want it done. It also came with the choice of salad or soup but unfortunately they didnt receive any ingredients for the soup that day so we got the salad, which was simple but deliciois. The fries were crispy and similar in texture to mcdonalds but without the heavy mcdonalds fry flavour. The only feedback to give that my mom was disappointed by was that they had this warmer to put the steak on but it was lit by a candle and it ended up cooking my mom's medium rare steak to basically well done before she got halfway through it. The ambiance was quite nice, it was cozy but in a nice bar kind of way if that makes sense. Our waitress was magnificent and was so attentive and kind, unfortunately i didn't catch her name but she was terrific. Obviously, this isn't a place for health food. You get a fine salad, but otherwise, this is a place to get a fabulous steak in a nice atmosphere for a high-ish but still reasonable price. It's perfect for a birthday or other special occasion. The strip steaks we got were perfect - literally perfect. Rare was rare and medium rare was medium rare. The steaks were extremely tender and juicy. The beef is very definitely a notch above the usual grocery store grade. The service was timely and friendly, the fries crispy and delicious, and we left stuffed. I love the ironclad reservation system. If more restaurants charged for reservations, we'd all get better service and prices. The only downsides are fairly minor. The dining room is a bit cramped. The beer selection is pathetic, with just one tasteless Pilsner. Seriously? They think they need to sell wine to make margin, but why not just charge a few more dollars than usual for a custom micro brew? Still, with a salad, giant steak, and endless fries, I didn't have room for much more than a Pilsner, anyway. read more

Lovely steak frites place that also serves delicious desserts (love loved the St. honore cake). Recommend just for the novelty of endless fries which can be fun if you order some wine to go with your meal. Very enjoyable for the price point. read more
