This is our first visit to Hickory, the owners are amazingly friendly. Our waitress was kind of…read moreneutral and acted like she didn't really want to be there. The food was good, but the major drawback is that a large plate only had four ribs, one of which you could barely call a rib. The second, drawback for me is that the ribs came with sauce already on them. That's like a major no-no in my book. I know, everybody has their preference, but I prefer to sauce my own food if I feel that it's necessary. To be honest, barbecue should stand on its own without sauce and sauce should only be there to enhance the flavor. The meat was tender, but I couldn't really get a feel for the flavor of the meat because the sauce interfered with that. The pulled pork plate was good. Also, my girlfriend said she enjoyed that. But again, sauce should come on the side in my opinion. I have no real complaint against this place, but I wish I had known ahead of time that the ribs came with sauce on them and I wish that I had known that there were only four ribs on the plate, I would've ordered a whole rack. Prices are good, the place is clean, and as I said, the owners are very welcoming and warm people. Give this place a go, it's worth a trip! But just ask questions before you order!

The dining area is very comfortable with homespun large wooden kitchen tables. They serve catfish, but only on Saturdays.

Others have mentioned the unfriendliness and poor service and this was also our experience overall. We opted for the family pack, which I thought allowed for some customization, but discovered that the $35 choice with two sides had to be the pulled pork. You do get a ton of pulled pork and generous portions of BBQ sauce with it, so it was kind of nice to have leftovers. On the other hand, the meat itself was just ok and we wished we had opted for the ribs or something else (and just not done the family pack which, outside of the quantity element, did not really seem worth it based on the prices of other meats). The baked beans were very sweet as it seemed like they added way too much sugar to them; same for the BBQ sauce. Highlight was probably the creamy mashed potatoes which tasted very good. The man acted surprised when I asked for silverware because we had ordered to-go and it must be outside the ordinary for a restaurant doing to-go to offer this? He also wasn't very friendly in telling us that none of our food (family pack) included drinks. Seating is available but somewhat limited (especially on the inside). Overall this wasn't great and I probably would not come back to this establishment without some changes or improvements.

We took a pork sandwich with slaw and a brisket platter with baked beans and green beans, to go. We thought everything was delicious. My husband also got 2 desserts.

When we drove up, we could smell the hickory smoke and saw the smoker on the sidewalk in front. When we walked in, we were told that menus are on the checkout counter, so I went to grab 2, but before we knew it, the uncle of the owner started reading every item on the menu for an uncomfortably long time. I'm a visual guy so I need to read menus at my own pace. We ordered the lunch combo - 1/2 lb. smoked brisket with 2 sides, 1 sauce, and a fountain drink are included. My wife had the 4 rib lunch with 1 side, 1 sauce, and a drink. There are 4 sauces to choose from. I chose the hot & spicy that was thin and mild; my wife chose the "Bama sauce", a white vinegar & salad dressing sauce that was good. I chose the Brussels sprouts hash and warm German potato salad that were both delicious, and my favorite menu items overall! I was surprised to see the brisket in a foil-wrapped packet next to the bun thinking that this method kept the meat hot, but when I opened the packet, the meat was not hot, but nicely smoked. The brisket was unusually cut into pellet- sized pieces that were slightly dry, under seasoned, and undercooked to my liking, and kept falling out of the bun. I would have preferred the traditional sliced brisket sandwich piled high with some topping choices like homemade pickles, hot peppers, etc. On the positive side, my wife's ribs were huge and they even threw in a few burnt ends. I tried one and thought it was also under seasoned and dry. My wife loved her ribs and said it was tender and juicy! The ambiance is quirky and uninviting with a bar behind the checkout and a few tables. There was a paper sign arrow in the back showing that they have a patio, but you have to walk through a storage area and past the restroom to get there. There were 3 or 4 picnic tables and 1 small bar-height table with 2 chairs. We didn't realize until we left that they served wine and beer until we saw a beer sign over the bar. I'm assuming this place is fairly new and they've got some kinks to work out, but if you go, I'd recommend the ribs and sides!
