Once again, Yelp has directed me to enlightenment. Remember when the Avs won the Stanley Cup in June? More specifically the game they shut out the Bolts 7-0? Well I was heading to a friend's house to watch the game and in a rush to get there. But wait. The group chat said we needed beer. Say no more, I got this. I pulled over and searched for places in the general vicinity. Joy popped up and I asked myself, "haven't I driven passed this place dozens of times?" Yep, that's the one. Shame on me for not coming here sooner. Especially since this is MY type of booze emporium. I was expecting more of a small, specialty wine shop. Yes, that's part of it. But wow, the selection of beer on hand was worth this review alone. It rivals the majority of all the major players in town. If I wasn't in a rush, I could've spent a good hour or two in the shop. To be honest, I don't even remember the beers I got. Both were local and went down easy. And all that to say, the Avs destroyed the Bolts 7-0 that night. The hospitality from the two employees I interacted with were both exceptional. Easy 5 stars. And in business since 1963? JWS, you have my vote! read more

Great neighborhood wine shop with knowledgeable staff and too many good deals to pass up. Pre-pandemic, I got on their email list and was often drawn to stop in when a rep was on hand from a brewery, distillery, or winery that sounded interesting. I had to stop opening emails--my liquor cabinet was growing. But they did help me discover some brands I really enjoy. They have a good selection, and staff can make good recommendations if you need a little help. In the pandemic, they quickly switched to online ordering and offer curbside pickup. Orders are ready quickly, and now they even have an app to make the process simpler. I get a text update when my order is ready, and usually a phone call too. Great customer service, and some good pricing. read more

This is my favorite spirits and wine store! They have been super proactive during the pandemic, I always feel very safe here. Their wine selection, for a smaller store, is really thoughtful and has excellent, unique wines. I love their Polish vodka, Wodka, it's serially one of the best. My favorite part is the kind and knowledgeable staff. I literally went in tonight and said I was making orecchiette with spicy sausage and broccoli rabe and a staff member, blonde woman, always knowledgeable and kind, pointed me to a northern Italian cab that I would likely never had selected in my own. She also introduced me to dry rieslings from willamette- WHAT?! I'm usually a fan of German/Austrian rieslings, but as I sip this wine while writing this review, she knows her stuff. One of the best wine shops in Denver. They stock a smaller inventory than the big wine shops in town, but it's extremely well procured selection of wines, spirits, beers, ciders and other neat stuff with a constantly rotating selection of stuff the bigger stores usually don't carry. I live a ways away but I always stop here when I'm near by. Joy provides a very personal touch as well. I received a phone call out of the blue the other day when they had a buying opportunity of a highly allocated wine they were offered by a distributor. They remembered I had bought some of it last time they had it and gave me a ring. I'M NOT EVEN A REGULAR HERE, I STOP IN MAYBE ONCE A MONTH. I can't recommend joy enough. I moved back to Denver 2 years ago. I forgot about this place. I went in today and this really nice gal asked me if I needed help. I said sure. I am looking for some red. She said great and got down to business. I bought 2 bottles of Chard and a pint of Jim beam. I was in and out in about 10 min. The wine she recommended is fantastic. Not too pricey. Mmmm.....alcohol. Let's start with the staff. They are all gracious, welcoming, and extremely knowledgeable. Everyone I have dealt with always has answer to my questions. The selection: Fantastic! No liquor store can have everything you want, so inevitably someone will be disappointed, but Joy has a wide variety of beer, wine, and liquor. They do a great job of stocking up on local beers; however, they also have some great beers from other parts of the country. My new favorite is the Firestone Walker Brewing Company. Try the Double Jack IPA in the 1 pint 6 oz. bottle. It is scrumptious. The fact that this establishment is in walking distance also makes me happy. Free beer! Does that say enough? Joy is now my preferred location for a relaxing shopping experience. The Argonaut is quickly becoming the location I go when I want to dodge beggars and theives as I exit. Joy offers friendly service, a wide selection of wines, liquors and beer and they even have samples, or at least they did on the night I went. The best part about it is it's not crowded so you don't have to feel like taking a shower after shopping. The argonaut is only a block away from my home, but I will ow happily go to Joy any time I want to have a relaxing, friendly experience. read more

This has become my "go-to" liquor store lately. As a craft beer junkie, it doesn't get much better. Sure the supermarket-size stores can stock more product, but Joy does an excellent job maintaining their craft stock with both standard fare like Odell/NB/Firestone/Dogfish Head with "white whales," (think special releases from the Bruery). I appreciate that Colorado breweries are well represented. I was recommended a Funkwerks beer by an employee that just knocked my footie pajamas right off. TROPIC KING fo' life! I have also scored a couple bottles of Parabola for aging/lording over people. Pro tip: If you don't see what you're looking for, just ask! They will track it down for you even if it hasn't made it to the shelves. Speaking of the staff, they are incredible. Always welcoming and answering questions for customers. I know next to nothing about wine, but the staff is willing to help a noob pick out a bottle that will wow the family at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Bow down wine snobs...I have a secret weapon now! I'm also a bourbon/rye drinker but usually just neat or on the rocks if I'm feeling cheeky. I asked for a recommendation on a rye drink and got a doozy: Bulleit Rye, vermouth, dash of bitters and some lemon peel. Bang-a-rang. I can't recall another liquor store employee recommending a drink recipe that wasn't pre-bottled or ended in -tini. The only downside is the small parking lot, but there is plenty of street parking nearby. read more

I like wine. This place sells wine. They are also a five minute walk from the house. So when I realize I am out of wine I can easily procure more without too much effort, regardless of how many glasses I've had. The employees are also very helpful, the other day a nice young man helped me find a decently priced bordeaux. It's a smaller shop so prices might be a bit more than what you'll get elsewhere, but I'm all about supporting local businesses and the extra few bucks is okay to me! read more

What a joy it was to find this gem after a long and stressful move!!!! We learned whole foods stores here don't carry alcohol- wine or beer- so we turned to Yelp who didn't steer us wrong like it did with our moving company here in Denver. Honestly, not a bad liquor store. The convenience factor for being in the direct area/neighborhood helps a lot. Staff is reasonable and polite. Selection is a little lacking, but I think the overall size of the store is the reason for that. Pricing seems to be a bit on the higher side of things, but nothing outrageous. Great little neighborhood liquor store. They don't have the selection you'd find at a big-box liquor store but they have quality items. I love the "build your own six pack" beer option. They stock a deal of Colorado beers as well as others. I was just in today and they had at least six pumpkin beers and several Oktoberfests as well. The staff are so helpful and so friendly. I went in a few weeks ago, hoping to get a whiskey for my boyfriend. My husband and I live a few blocks away and we love that we can walk to Joy. It's definitely a smaller neighborhood store and they don't carry as large of a selection, but I will say that whenever I've asked for something, the staff have done their best to get it for me. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable--I am by no means a wine connoisseur and they don't make me feel bad about it! They have also talked my husband through perfecting a Manhattan (and an Old Fashioned...and others...). We gladly spend the extra couple of bucks to shop here in the smaller environment with friendly employees. Oh, did I mention they do free wine tastings? Free wine tasting ... need I say more? Every Wednesday and Friday they sample out their sale items in hopes of you buying them..which is a strategy that usually works on me. On my trip there they sampled four wines and I ended up purchasing two. The employees who were leading the tasting were very friendly and knew their stuff. I had a great time even if I was constantly fighting the urge after each sample to return with my empty wine glass asking for a 'resample'...y'know just to be sure I really liked it... If you love your wine and/or beer, than this is definitely a great way to try some new brands. The store itself is really cute and low-key, which I enjoy since it seems I get a more personal experience and the staff know what they are talking about, which is a nice touch. They have a great selection although not as huge as those big chains out there, but at least here you feel like you are supporting your neighborhood small business. Check it out! read more

This is my favorite liquor store. I probably spend way too much money (and I could be getting all those points on my Argonaut card), but I can't help it. If you like to be the first to try new beers, this is the place to go. I've gotten so many good, limited-edition beers here. Their six-pack selection is also great and you can do make your own sixer for 9.99. The prices are competitive. They have a good wine selection as well, although you'll usually find me perusing the beer bomber selection. The staff is awesome, they are always super-friendly and ready to help if you need them. I often overhear them giving beer suggestions and they really know their stuff. They also do regular beer/wine tastings, and you can like them on Facebook or get their email newsletter to keep up to date on the events. The location is great, the beer selection is amazing. Great liquor store in a great neighborhood. Joy has a great selection of beer, wine, and liquor and really has anything you'll be looking for in a liquor store. My favorite feature at this place is their "make your own six pack" offer, where you can mix a good selection of great beers to make your own pack for $9.99, which is a pretty good price given some of the beers that are offered-they include New Belgium's "explorer" beers, like the wonderful Trippel. Staff is terrific, very friendly and knowledgable-they'll help you find everything you need. There's also a gentle pup who hangs out and loves to be pet, just adding to the cool small neighborhood feel. I've got to say this place is pretty awesome. As a wine geek, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the wines, but they have a great selection over all for their wines. They've also got a killer beer selection and you can make your own sixer by mixing and matching, which is a great way to sample a variety of stuff. I've come to prefer Joy Wine & Spirits over other neighborhood liquor stores and over the much larger, Argonaut. Despite being small, they carry a fairly large and good selection of wine that is displayed well, so it's easy to find what you're looking for. While it's a small touch, I like that the personnel take the price tag off of your bottle in case you plan on serving it to guests later that night. Joy has a good selection of beer, as well, and carries product from many local breweries. We recently walked out with a bomber of River North's J. Marie saison and a Funkwerks bomber. If you have a hard time deciding what type of brew you're in the mood for, they offer a Make Your Own Six Pack feature for less than $10.
