All was going well when all of a sudden, the security (bald with a gotie and glasses) comes up to our friend and says "I have to speak to you". With no explanation, kicks her out. We were just there not doing anything. They kicked her out without finishing her drink, or anything. Such bad management. Apparently one of the people there said she got into a fight with someone, mind you we were only there for 15 minutes and had only our first drink. Also, we never left our table. Horrible security. Summary: A bartender robbed us and management is fine with it. I had two friends in town for dinner. We went to Bavette's (amazing) and then stopped into Joy District for a couple cocktails. We saddled up to the bar, and Angie told us she'd be serving us for the evening. We were already feeling saucy, so we stuck to the flowery menu of classic drinks for $13 a pop--nothing fancy. Not long into our stay, Angie pulls out store-bought fruit. She tears through the cellophane wrap on some watermelon, dumps a couple pieces into a cocktail shaker, and mashes it to pulp. She then tops it with vodka, pours four shots (three for us, one for her), and... bottoms up. Tasted like shit, but whatever -- it's a gift and it's the thought that counts. Little while later, she tears into some pineapple. Shaker, tequila, four shots. You know the drill. She does this FOUR times. Never did she ask if we wanted a shot, each time they tasted like trash. But we're nice and, at this point, nicely inebriated. By the time my friends' Uber arrives, I'm not seeing straight. My friend scribbles his name on the credit card slip and off we go. The next day, he tells me the tab for the three of us was $425 (before tip). He never saw an itemized bill. I called management immediately. Iggy (manager) tells me he'll send me the itemized bill and that "we can go from there." I receive the bill and, sure enough, Angie charged us for 17 (one extra??) shots that we never ordered. I emailed Iggy and suggested this behavior was not only malicious but also intentional. I also suggested that this has likely happened to other guests and he should be concerned. And lastly I asked that he refund the cost of these shots. Crickets. I called. No reply. I followed up via email. No reply. I tweeted at them. No reply. Another phone call... another email... And here we are. We were robbed, and Joy District management apparently does not see any problem with this behavior. Perhaps Angie and Iggy are the bad apples. We came here specifically for the rooftop lounge and it was a blast prior to the storm that decided to rain on our parade. Gogo girls had bubble machine guns, everyone was dancing, and we had a table under a beautiful red and white stripped awning. We rushed inside to take cover. The next level down was the dance club. This space is amazing and the energy was high! It felt like mini Vegas. Tubular shaped light fixtures move up and down from the ceiling while changing colors, there's a huge screen behind the DJ booth, sound system is so good my eardrums we're shaking, smoke shoots out of the walls every so often, and the music was great we danced to every song! Opted out of $300 bottle service bc we would have lost the table after 1hr and 40min, if a $1000 spender arrived and bc their reservation list was filled. We moved levels and decided on grabbing some appetizers to eat. We had miso chips, lobster egg rolls, chicken lollipops, and a plethora of complimentary drinks. Everything was great but the lobster egg rolls could have used some flavor. There was some miscommunication with the birthday girl and the bouncer but management was extremely apologetic and compensated us for the trouble. A+ for great management. Aside from there being a lot of Bro looking dudes and a younger crowd, I don't think that will stop me from returning. We all had a great night!! Our party had a reservation for dinner for 15 people at 8:30pm. When we got there it took about 5 people to take us to a table in the empty dining area. Our waitress was nice and the food runners and bus boys were attentive. That's the only good. Went to the bathroom and they were filthy.. clogged toilets... tp on the floor...just not what you expect from a "nice" place. After dinner, we found out to get to the roof, you have to go back to the front door bouncer to get a stamp. It would make more sense to give us the stamp when we arrived but he wouldn't. Then roof closes at 11:30/12 so we head downstairs but aren't allowed on the 2nd floor, even though they're telling us to leave and then tell us to get a stamp downstairs.... again..... 1/2 of us get downstairs to then same bouncer at the door to be told we have to pay $10/person to get to the 2nd floor and the other 1/2 some how got onto the 2nd floor... I'm sorry... we dropped probably over $700 with our group and now would have to pay more to get to another floor to then pay for more over priced city drinks..... We came to Chicago for my best friends bachelor party and heard great things about Joy District so we booked a table through Marko, one of the promoter's at joy district. He quoted us a $1,000 minimum and said he would start us on the rooftop and then move us into the nightclub when they close the rooftop at midnight. We agreed. Reservation made. We got to the night club around 10:30 on Saturday and Marko's boss greeted me at the door. He quickly informed me that there wasn't any more tables available at the $1,000 price even though we had a reservation. He also said I didn't make a deposit which Marko NEVER informed me was necessary. He also claimed that the reservation was made weeks ago (why the hell does that matter, it's a reservation). I requested to speak to Marko face to face to hash things out and he refused, his boss claiming he had too many tables to handle. Long story short, avoid Joy District for your Chicago trip. I hadn't been back here since it was Epic, and had always had a good time there, so figured I'd give the new place a try. We had an 830 reservation on the first floor (Parlay). After waiting for 15 minutes at the host stand, past our reservation time, a bouncer finally walked up and apologized but "he didn't know where" the hostess went. He went behind the stand and found our reservation and directed us to our table. Our table was probably meant to sit about 8 people, and they had no explanation why they didn't provide a larger table. So, 14 of us crammed in. After our meal, and spending a pretty big chunk of cash, we decided to head to the roof. We were told to go back outside and get a hand stamp from the bouncer. We go outside and they were very "selective" in whose hands were stamped, making it painfully obvious to some in our group they didn't fit the "standard". We finally get to the roof, had a decent time and then when the roof closed at 12 headed back down to the second floor. This is when things went really south. Half of us were allowed onto the second floor with no issue or cover. The other half was booted downstairs claiming "they were at capacity." When they reached the first floor, they were told they could go up with a ridiculous cover. At that point it was pretty obvious what was going on. Never planning on spending money here again, never had this experience when this place was EPIC. They claim Millennials are killing the nightlife industry. Ha, after this, I can see why. Note: this review is based purely off of the rooftop bar. There were about 50 of us in our private group accommodated upstairs on the third floor on the rooftop (elevators and stairs available). Mind you, the view is basically the side of other much taller skyscrapers, but it is still breathtaking. At night, they light up the stringed lights across the top of the roof, which makes for a romantic and cozy experience. There are couches lined up against the side walls, as well as open standing area in the middle for mingling. Drinks are crazy expensive, but to be expected for this area. The staff, security, and bartenders were all very nice and welcoming. Had a great conversation with Al, one of the security guards, and he was super joyous and easygoing that it made me feel quite welcome. So, I went to this place around 6:00PM for a friend's birthday after work. There is a rooftop outside setting, which was very pretty and fun! The music wasn't very loud, I don't even remember it enough to comment on. Mixed drinks are roughly $12 on the lower end. Beers ran about $4-$6, ($6 for a Corona) I give this place a 3 stars because I truly love a place with music I can remember. I did however have fun and I would go back! Not worth it for someone who values a craft cocktail and authentic experience. I payed $17 for one cocktail.... In addition to the base price they charge some extra cost on drinks plus gratuity. Overall two cocktails which were both just Espolón tequila came out to $50. Like seriously. I can buy a whole bottle for less and make a better drink than what was on the menu. That was a seasonal menu item btw which did not list the price. Maybe my fault for not asking before hand but it was also the only menu with drinks on it suggesting all other drinks are just classic bar drinks such a vodka sodas. To paint a picture every single plant in there is fake and all servers wear the same bodycon dress. This is definitely not a craft cocktail place and more like a bar vodka and soda type place trying to do cocktails but without any real mixologist influence. Great if that's your vibe but as an overall review for good drink, the answer is no. Nothing against the bartenders more so against whoever is running this place and missing out on making it big as an actual artisanal place given its location. They did have a good service though. First of all, we had just spent $250 between the six of us in my group, second of all, who charges a cover that early in the night?! Third of all, the entire club didn't even open until 10. Why would we pay the full amount to get in for only half of what they offer? Our waitress tried to come speak on our behalf, but they weren't hearing her. I went to Joy District on January 12th for my friend's 30th birthday. Things started off just fine, waited in line for about 5-10 minutes, got in, ordered some drinks, and enjoyed ourselves. Unfortunately, things went downhill towards the end of the night for our group. We first had some trouble getting a couple of friends in, despite there not being a line. The bouncers insisted that they needed to pay cover to get in/go upstairs. Our contact at JD told us there was no pressure for a wristband, and could come in and go upstairs or remain downstairs as we saw fit. After my friend's wife went outside and pleaded with the bouncer for about 20 minutes or so (snowing outside, btw), we were finally able to get our friends in. As the night drew to a close, our friends were all walking out and one of the bouncers (didn't catch his name) said "don't let anymore Indians in" right in front of all of us. Honestly, I can't believe he could possibly say something like that to us, especially in a city like Chicago (especially in 2019...as a human). We weren't being disruptive. We went in, drank, danced, paid our tab, tipped our bartenders (who were great, btw), and left in an orderly fashion. No one had an issue with us while we were inside, no one had to come over and tell us to settle down, or anything. We were behaving no differently than anyone else in there, aside from being Indian, I guess. I am truly disappointed that we had to end an otherwise great night on such a low note...My friend's wife has contact management about this issue, and we're waiting on a response and see what action they take to fix the situation. Came here for Sunday brunch. Our waitress seemed like she might've partied to hard the night before. She was very sluggish and slow. They have bottomless mimosas which are pre made and the orange juice has pulp! I prefer no pulp. I ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken was seasoned very well however the menu started chicken breast I got more like 3 chicken nuggets they were tiny. We also had the shrimp and grits which were nasty. It had like cabbage and carrots in it I never known shrimp and grits to have those toppings. The steak and eggs was delicious. They didn't play any other type of music besides pop. We decided to go to the joy district rooftop. Very unfortunate decision. They claimed not to have a cocktail menu. My friend ordered two strawberry martinis and I ordered two basic margaritas, bill came out to $105. I should've known we would've been overcharged when no cocktail menus with pricing were provided. I've never been to an establishment where they decide to overcharge you this irrationally when there's pretty much no one else there. The saddest part is, the two margaritas I received were mostly full of ice, and three sips of actual margarita. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

Completely ignored me, and when I found out my friend had left without letting me, I went to the bouncer and explained that I had been left alone and needed to go back in to find the group they were with, as my phone was dead and I needed someone's help. He told me no he doesn't care. I am a very small girl and told the man that I am not safe out in the street at 1:30am with a dead phone and nobody with me. My friend's group was just inside, I just needed to tell them that I'm stuck outside and needed their help to order an Uber. Bouncer was incredibly rude and said no. I stood outside by myself for like half hour as the bouncers watched several older men approach me and and ask to take me home, and I was literally crying because I was so scared and uncomfortable. They did nothing to stop it. All they had to do was let me go tell my friends to meet me outside.
