I was staying at the Highlander and Jose's was right next door. I forgot my phone on this trip (Doh) and I wasn't feeling that adventurous, so I decided to drop in. The service was fast and friendly. The decor is below average, but I care a lot more about the food, and Jose's delivered. I got the steak and chicken fajitas, (refer to the earlier memo about not feeling adventurous), and they were great! The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that the chicken was a little tough - like it had been pre-cooked and reheated. I also asked for a side of baked jalapeños - really good... Speaking of chicken, I got some tortilla (chicken) soup to go and even though I was stuffed, before I put it into the fridge for later, I sneaked a sip - holy cow! If you are ever in the mood for some great chicken soup - or if you get a cold or the flu - now you know where to go. I will be working in the area next week again, and I am definitely stopping back. read more

Margaritas are not so special and I think they are wine based. Highlands Tx is different with their alcohol laws so I may be wrong? I ate at a different restaurant here a couple weeks ago and they said beer or wine only yet there are liquor stores in town. This is Texas? Chips and salsa are definitely worth the stop(I judge a place based on that first impression). Guacamole was fresh but not chunky the way I love it. I asked if the enchilada gravy was chile con carne and she said yes. I believe it's a language barrier as they were just a gravy. It's definitely more Mexican than Tex-Mex here! Come for the hole in the wall great food. The place where you get great chips, salsa and Mexican food. Skip the margaritas and learn some espanol for a good meal. read more

Called to place an order for a torta, 6 min called to change my order for a diff place they said if the torta was ready they couldn't change it. I doubt the torta was ready that quickly , has my dad place an order for the place he wanted. When I went to go pick it up they said they had to charge me for both plates even though I didn't want the torta & said bc they would be throwing away the food. The food hasn't been touched I know you're going to eat it or someone else. Told them I wasn't going to pay for either if they were going to charge me for something I didn't want , and just because of that they said they wouldn't be taking any more orders from me. They throw food away all the time and just for a plate and that torta was going to be $26!?!?!?? read more

I have eaten here 4 times and love thier food! The resturant has been a Highlands landmark for many years. The waitstaff are usually fast to take your order be-it they are not over ran with hungry locals! They serve mostly original Mexican food with a touch of Tex-Mex! Prices are fair and the food is plentyful. The menu is big alot to read and pictures. Beer is served cold with a frosty mug and lime slice, try a Modello Gold! The Carnigusada is very tasty with extra gravy to dip your flour tortilla into. Nice atmosphere with the noise level depends on how many hungry gringo's are waiting to eat. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did - give it a try next time your in Highlands Tx! read more

The customer service is very poor. The salsa is sour, and the food is disgusting. I can't believe they made me pay for that.

Eat here often and it never disappoints. Good Tex-Mex options. They have their own spin on guisada which is pretty good. The husband orders steak ranchero which is very tasty. Love their tortillas read more

Do not go !!! charge for verde salsa/chili bad service and food not good at all nor is it real authentic Mexican food! I could've done better job in my own kitchen! Maybe i should open my own restaurant and call it straight out the kitchen! But this restaurant is not Jose's it's no way Jose's!!!! read more

Still great Tex-mex food. Everything I have eaten here over the years was always good. Wether eating there or to go, the service is always fast, courteous, and correct. Easy to get to off I-10, and the best place in town to eat if you live in Highlands. read more

Going here for years.... always excellent service and food is good. These folks that give bad reviews are either super picky or just somehow things were bad one day. We live in Highlands and have never had bad food or bad service since they first opened. read more

Great spot right off of I-10. Stopped for lunch after seeing the parking lot full of utility trucks and cop cars, which typically means good food at reasonable prices. Place isn't fancy, but food is excellent, I always like the queso chip and anything with verde sauce. Menu can be intimidating, but really can't go wrong. Go every time I'm in the area. read more

No drink refills, literally had to beg to get a salsa refill, and they ran out of free ice cream!!

Our favorite Mexican restaurant! Deco not fantastic but food makes up for it. Sopapillas are the best!

HORRIBLE SERVICE AND STAFF Friends and I went there for lunch. Waited 10 minutes before we got our drinks ( a table that was there soon after us, got theirs first). Ordered 1 quesadilla with corn tortillas, and extra cheese. Sent the food back the first time because there was no extra cheese and they were on flour tortillas. When they brought our fod back, they replaced the extra cheese we requested, with grease. So we got extra grease instead of extra cheese. They tried to blame the number of mistakes on the fact that they were busy. Yes, they were busy, but serving your customers what they ask for, is business. We still didn't get to eat because they took forever, and we were on a time crunch. The cashier- who was extremely rude to us, tried to make us pay for food that did not get to get eaten because we had to send it back several times and because we had to leave to go back to work. Asked for a manager several times and still did not get to speak to one. What happened to the customer is always right? Having previous management experience in a restaraunt, i know that her meal should have been free, or a free meal offered on the establishment at the next visit. Instead they asked us to leave because we refused to pay. read more

I love this place, I have been going here for years. Their salsa is so good, my #1 is the Chile Relleno just the way it comes. It is AMAZING! read more

The food is NOT authentic mexican. Ordered a large burrito and got a small folded flour tortilla with what looked like crap inside, very sloppy. Will never eat here again. If you want AUTHENTIC mexican food, this is not the place to go. Would not and will not recomend this place to anyone read more
