For example, at my most recent visit he explained the bacteria colonies that live in our mouths and how they connect to broader health issues, and talked about different tooth shapes and what they can indicate, pointing out some positive characteristics of my own teeth in a way that felt thoughtful and professional. She was experiencing significant dental pain, and we were initially told that the office accepted her insurance. Once we arrived, however, we were informed that insurance would not be used for her particular problem and that we would need to pay the full balance ourselves. Because my mother was in considerable pain, we agreed to proceed. We were told that what appeared to be an infection required drainage and cleaning. She initially felt better after the procedure and pain medication, but the relief lasted only about three days. Her pain gradually returned and, by the seventh day, had become excruciating. We then took her to her regular dentist, who performed additional imaging and determined that she needed a root canal. When I contacted Pacific Dental to discuss what had happened and express my concerns, the office staff came across as dismissive and defensive rather than helpful or understanding. I understand that dental conditions can sometimes require additional treatment, but the combination of the unexpected insurance issue, the temporary relief, and the way our concerns were handled made this a very poor experience for our family.
