    Size small Gyro
    Olivia L.

What a fun take out spot that is conveniently located in downtown Appleton. I had been craving Mediterranean food and decided to check out Josef's Gyros & Kabobs and was not disappointed. This location offers carry out only, but there is limited outdoor seating available. We decided to make the most out of a nice day and sit outside; the workers were gracious enough to bring our food out to our table when it was finished. We ordered a small gyro which was huge for one person! If you want something light, I would recommend the slim gyro or one of their platters. I also ordered a chicken gyro platter that came in a bowl with basmanti rice, roasted veggies, and hummus (your choice of protein and sauce). Lastly, we ordered a 3 piece falafel side. There is also a 5 piece option. The garlic in their hummus and tzatziki sauce really stands out. I'm a big fan of garlic so this was a plus for me, but good to keep in mind if you're not. I will definitely be stopping by here again next time I'm craving Mediterranean food and on the go!

Tried this place out based on reviews and I must say it was just ok for us. The gyro meat for me was too thick and needed more Greek seasoning/flavoring. My husband told me my homemade gyros were better. Also tried the chicken thigh gyro but had too much curry flavor. The falafel was pretty good, the tzatziki sauce was pretty bland though. The seasoned fries were pretty good but had way too much green herb seasoning on them. The slim size gyro is big enough, wow! There is no seating inside. Would we go back probably not.

Once a year I don't make it to Appleton very often, but on my past stops Josef's has been my go-to for a lunch break. The portions here are huge (a small gyro is not too small) and service is friendly and fast. I like the chicken gyro - some places will just have seasoned chicken breast but this is the good stuff on a spit. Love the tzatziki and fries too.

Oh man. Buckle up because this place will knock your socks off. INCREDIBLE Gyros. I love and work near downtown and have their classic gyro at least twice a week. It's a small place with some mighty staff who are always happy and working hard despite the fact that it looks like it's quite warm in that kitchen.

This place is on point. A step above a food truck in terms of size, a step below a full blown restaurant. With only like two tables most people opt to not eat there. However I've been there at 11:15AM and 2PM and there are ALWAYS people picking up orders. Thus far, I've tried the salads and the gyros. Today we picked some up for lunch to take home to eat. This did not disappoint. This is my third time here and all three experiences have been awesome. ONE CAUTION: cilantro comes standard on gyros here. While I really like cilantro, I prefer that it be in salsa and all of that stuff. I don't like a ton of it "fresh/raw." Having it in a gyro was good, but it's overwhelming. So I've opted to not get cilantro on my last two visits. Good food, good prices, the only drawback is having to find this place. It is in an oddball location behind the main storefronts on College ave. There is ample parking by this restaurant and they do take call ahead orders if you don't have a ton of time. Definitely worth the hunt to find this place! Food and service are on point!

Great hidden gem in downtown Appleton! I'm so glad I found this place using my trusty Yelp app because it's tucked away behind College Ave. on Soldiers Square near the Trout Museum. When we stepped into the tiny building, another customer told us, "These are the best gyros in town!" And he wasn't kidding! Two other happy customers were enjoying the Big Gyro sandwich and I had a Mindy Lahiri moment thinking to myself: "I'm like a tiny, dainty bird, there's no way I could eat a sandwich THAT big." All joking aside, the Big Gyro is definitely for hearty appetites! After visiting once for lunch, this has become my go-to spot for a healthy and fresh salad in downtown Appleton. I highly recommend the Large Greek Salad ($6.50) with Gyro meat added (+$2) - it is made with all fresh ingredients and is delicious! The salad is large enough to split for two people and comes with a generous serving of meat, plus feta cheese, pepperoncinis, cherry tomatoes, sliced red onions, and Kalamata olives. The Small Gryro ($6.50) is not to be underestimated - there's nothing "small" about it! It's BIG on flavor and filled with a generous amount of gyro meat, lettuce, onions, and fresh tzatziki sauce. Finally, don't miss out on trying the appetizers and dessert! We shared a Large order of Hummus, which you can tell is made fresh in house as it is much more flavorful than the packaged dip you've tried at the grocery store. I look forward to visiting again to try the Loaded Greek Fries and Baklava.

This is one of the best meal I have had in Appleton. It's a super small place with 3 tables tucked into the lane behind the Houdini plaza. I ordered a Small Gyro and it was not at all small. The pita was super soft and the ratio of the condiments to the meat was perfect. And Now the meat - The meat was succulent and seasoned in the best possible way. The spices didn't overpower the taste of the meat which showcases how the Gyro should be. The basket contained fresh fries and the hummus was excellent too. It's rare for me to walk up to compliment the chef but yes, I couldn't stop myself here. Definitely visiting it again. Oh and did I tell you - Its total VFM (Value for Money). A hidden gem, for sure!

Small gyro with fries and s'hug

Fantastic gyros! Ordered the small and still had plenty of meat. Seasoned fries liberally covered in delicious zatar seasoning. Got a side of s'hug for some spice and extra flavor.

I really don't think this has much meat in it whatsoever. I've never seen chopped lettuce in a gyro either but I can handle that. I unfortunately knew there was going to be an issue when the lamb on the spit had to be heated up as I stood there waiting since It wasn't already heated and turning. The seemed to have all three spits turned off and it was only 1:30. Cannot understand the lack of veg at all - that's the cheap stuff people Honestly this was a sad experience. I have to add that I ate about 1/2 of this gyro, not for lack of being hungry but mildly warm lamb turns cold quickly and without more veg this turned dry quick. They tzatziki sauce was off putting as well. Was this a bad day here for them or a regular occurrence of low quality, poor timing on shutting down cooking elements, not enough business to keep the basics on? Really confused who would allow this to leave their business in a customers hands to be photoed.....

Being the former Basil restaurant space, the interior is more intimate, darkly lit and a sure romantic spot for date night. The waitress was prompt and helpful selecting drinks off of their menu, inclusive of wine, beer and craft cocktails. Everyone at our table ordered a different drink or glass of wine and there were no complaints. For appetizers I ordered a bruschetta, which was served on a very crispy slice of seasoned bread. What was interesting was that the tomato topping (which was perfectly seasoned with basil, garlic and other spices) was served in a bowl on the side to allow everyone to top to their taste preference. It was a nice touch. We also sampled the cheese curds, which held up well to our Wisconsin standards, and a soup which I can't remember the name of but got high marks. Now for the main course. I was not expecting to be mind blown, by my god. The namesake dish, the Osso Bucco, was absolutely phenomenal. The veal was literally falling off of the bone and was easily, effortlessly separated with a fork. I have rarely had meat this tender. On the other side of the bowl was a fantastic risotto and a perfectly seasoned stew of carrots and onions. I did not indulge in the bone marrow, but I have heard it is a delicacy. Altogether this dish was worth every penny, and I will absolutely be having it again. To finish off this fantastic meal we opted for the tiramisu, which was elegantly plated in a creative manner I have never before seen. I enjoyed the wonderful ending to this delicious meal, and when you visit this restaurant I'm sure you will too.

I had the seafood stew, and it was quite underwhelming; it was more of an under-seasoned pasta dish. The bay scallops and shrimp were pretty tough and overcooked, BUT whatever whitefish was in the dish was outstanding. My hubby had a Caesar salad and the scallops entree. Both were wonderfully executed. The dressing on the salad was the perfect amount, lettuce crisp, and just plainly done well. And the scallops were perfect. Elaboration would take away from what was just 'muah.' :) Server was attentive, but not overly pushy. Ambiance was low key, quiet, and warm.
