From Chicago we miss gyros more than anything. If a restaurant advertises them we always ask: fresh off the spit? And they usually respond with, "huh?" So we order anything else. A woman on the plane next to me from Chicago to Wisconsin compared restaraunts and she told me about Josef's! I went the next day! Fabulous, friendly, great sauces and menu! Very popular already. read more

I had the chicken gyro, hubs had the regular gyro, daughter had the falafel and hummus. We were all satisfied. It is not an eat in spot but they had a few tables outside. Service was pretty quick. read more

I've been ordering from Josef's since I move to Appleton from Atlanta last summer. They have the best gyro and chicken gyro in the city. Tonigtt I decided to add feta to my chicken gyro. it was too much feta. It looks like 3oz of feta in my small gyro which will run your food costs up. read more

Small little "hole in the wall", carry out only. Indoor bench to wait for order, restroom, a few tables outside to break bread. Best falafel ever!!!! Crunchy outside with soft inside. Amazingly good. Creamy hummus with the perfect amount of garlic. The "small" gyro was heaped with meat, had fresh mint and tomatoes. The gyro meat and pita are shipped from Chicago. Somewhat off the beaten track, but a great find. read more

What a fun take out spot that is conveniently located in downtown Appleton. I had been craving Mediterranean food and decided to check out Josef's Gyros & Kabobs and was not disappointed. This location offers carry out only, but there is limited outdoor seating available. We decided to make the most out of a nice day and sit outside; the workers were gracious enough to bring our food out to our table when it was finished. We ordered a small gyro which was huge for one person! If you want something light, I would recommend the slim gyro or one of their platters. I also ordered a chicken gyro platter that came in a bowl with basmanti rice, roasted veggies, and hummus (your choice of protein and sauce). Lastly, we ordered a 3 piece falafel side. There is also a 5 piece option. The garlic in their hummus and tzatziki sauce really stands out. I'm a big fan of garlic so this was a plus for me, but good to keep in mind if you're not. I will definitely be stopping by here again next time I'm craving Mediterranean food and on the go! read more

The cheat plate is just healthy enough to still enjoy a gyro and get nutrients. Only set backs are there's no place to eat & there's very limited parking. read more

Tried this place out based on reviews and I must say it was just ok for us. The gyro meat for me was too thick and needed more Greek seasoning/flavoring. My husband told me my homemade gyros were better. Also tried the chicken thigh gyro but had too much curry flavor. The falafel was pretty good, the tzatziki sauce was pretty bland though. The seasoned fries were pretty good but had way too much green herb seasoning on them. The slim size gyro is big enough, wow! There is no seating inside. Would we go back probably not. read more

First of all, they advertise roasted vegetables, but they are grilled vegetables. Also, we ordered the largest Gyro and received a tiny container of Taziki sauce and for that size we should've received two tzatziki sauces. The gyro meat was a bit dry and flavor was OK. I think Wendy City. has much better gyros and that's where I will be going for my next year gyro. read more

Had lunch here and I tried the classic gyro with tzaziki sauce. the gyro was stuffed and did not disappoint.

I love gyros I look all over for places like this. This place was great to find I love everything!!!!

Once a year I don't make it to Appleton very often, but on my past stops Josef's has been my go-to for a lunch break. The portions here are huge (a small gyro is not too small) and service is friendly and fast. I like the chicken gyro - some places will just have seasoned chicken breast but this is the good stuff on a spit. Love the tzatziki and fries too. read more

This place is on point. A step above a food truck in terms of size, a step below a full blown restaurant. With only like two tables most people opt to not eat there. However I've been there at 11:15AM and 2PM and there are ALWAYS people picking up orders. Thus far, I've tried the salads and the gyros. Today we picked some up for lunch to take home to eat. This did not disappoint. This is my third time here and all three experiences have been awesome. ONE CAUTION: cilantro comes standard on gyros here. While I really like cilantro, I prefer that it be in salsa and all of that stuff. I don't like a ton of it "fresh/raw." Having it in a gyro was good, but it's overwhelming. So I've opted to not get cilantro on my last two visits. Good food, good prices, the only drawback is having to find this place. It is in an oddball location behind the main storefronts on College ave. There is ample parking by this restaurant and they do take call ahead orders if you don't have a ton of time. Definitely worth the hunt to find this place! Food and service are on point! read more

Oh man. Buckle up because this place will knock your socks off. INCREDIBLE Gyros. I love and work near downtown and have their classic gyro at least twice a week. It's a small place with some mighty staff who are always happy and working hard despite the fact that it looks like it's quite warm in that kitchen. read more

Great hidden gem in downtown Appleton! I'm so glad I found this place using my trusty Yelp app because it's tucked away behind College Ave. on Soldiers Square near the Trout Museum. When we stepped into the tiny building, another customer told us, "These are the best gyros in town!" And he wasn't kidding! Two other happy customers were enjoying the Big Gyro sandwich and I had a Mindy Lahiri moment thinking to myself: "I'm like a tiny, dainty bird, there's no way I could eat a sandwich THAT big." All joking aside, the Big Gyro is definitely for hearty appetites! After visiting once for lunch, this has become my go-to spot for a healthy and fresh salad in downtown Appleton. I highly recommend the Large Greek Salad ($6.50) with Gyro meat added (+$2) - it is made with all fresh ingredients and is delicious! The salad is large enough to split for two people and comes with a generous serving of meat, plus feta cheese, pepperoncinis, cherry tomatoes, sliced red onions, and Kalamata olives. The Small Gryro ($6.50) is not to be underestimated - there's nothing "small" about it! It's BIG on flavor and filled with a generous amount of gyro meat, lettuce, onions, and fresh tzatziki sauce. Finally, don't miss out on trying the appetizers and dessert! We shared a Large order of Hummus, which you can tell is made fresh in house as it is much more flavorful than the packaged dip you've tried at the grocery store. I look forward to visiting again to try the Loaded Greek Fries and Baklava. read more

Very solid gyro spot. The gyro meat is fantastic, cooked and seasoned perfectly. There is a bit too much lettuce and too little Tzatziki, but that's easily fixed. Worth a visit if you enjoy gyros! Also, the BIG size is definitely an "extra meat" to eat separately type situation. read more

Hard to find (backside of College Ave.) but worth the trek! I agree that Josef makes the best gyro in the Fox Valley. Large gyro is very big. Need to ask for extra sauce because the cup they give is not enough to cover the big sandwich. Frys are nothing spectacular, they do have some type of seasoning on them but I'm not sure what it is. Small dining area, most people take there food to go. Gyro in a car?? Sounds messy and possibly dangerous! Gyros make me want keep coming back. read more

Absolute best gyros around. If i could eat here everyday i think i would! Great portion sizes, great flavors, love their fries!

Food was absolutely amazing, loved how we could see the food being made in front of us. Small place takeout only this place needs more recognition for the outstanding food. If you get the Big gyro I would definitely recommend getting an extra sauce with it. The seasoned fries are a must get. And the baklava is insane. read more

This is one of the best meal I have had in Appleton. It's a super small place with 3 tables tucked into the lane behind the Houdini plaza. I ordered a Small Gyro and it was not at all small. The pita was super soft and the ratio of the condiments to the meat was perfect. And Now the meat - The meat was succulent and seasoned in the best possible way. The spices didn't overpower the taste of the meat which showcases how the Gyro should be. The basket contained fresh fries and the hummus was excellent too. It's rare for me to walk up to compliment the chef but yes, I couldn't stop myself here. Definitely visiting it again. Oh and did I tell you - Its total VFM (Value for Money). A hidden gem, for sure! read more

My favorite place for gyros! The flavor is SO good, and the meat is amazing. The price is also amazing for what you get!!! The fries are super tasty too with the seasoning they use. Love that you can also get some different Sarandon salad options. Great stop for an afternoon lunch! Easy to grab and go as you need but they have some seats inside and out. Grabbed lunch here on a Saturday. The place wasn't super busy, which was good because it is very small. Only room for about 8 inside, but they dis have tables setup outside. This is a very high value place! We got a regular gyro and a skinny chicken gyro. They both had the perfect amount of food for each of us. We really dont know how someone could eat their namesake. It would be sooo much meat! The gyro also had plenty of veggies in it and the pita was pretty good. My only comment was that the cucumber sauce was a lot thicker than I was expecting, almost sour cream consistency. We will definitely be back if we're in the area! read more

Delicious and fresh gyro! The small size is not in any way small, I'll have to remember to order an extra tahini sauce in the future. I've been wanting to try this place out for a while and am a little disappointed I didn't come sooner. It's very small with limited seating inside (maybe 6 people?). But you can always order to go or if it's warm weather I'm sure you can find somewhere to hang outside to scarf down your order. We ordered a big and small gyro basket (comes with fries, other half requested falafels) and you can add a drink for $0.50. Typical gyro with tomatoes, onions and lettuce and a side of tzatziki sauce (pretty good sauce, I drowned it with tzatziki but definitely should have gone lighter, it's pretty thick). But the gyro meat was more than typical. It had this nice crisp to it which I really liked. The falafels were meh, dry and a little hard. The fries were not too soft and not too crispy so just right for me, and I think there was a Mediterranean spice mix(?) sprinkled on top which was lovely. I tried it with ketchup but it's best enjoyed as is. We also got a baklava which was incredibly sweet! We've had legit baklava (that sounds really snobby but for reals. also, not sure if this was legit baklava, I didn't ask) and we're used to a subtler sweetness with pistachios (maybe I couldn't taste the pistachios? High possibility). Regardless if you got a sweet tooth go for it! I'm pretty sure it won't disappoint you with it's flakiness and sugary-ness. I will say, the basket for the small is pretty big. The only difference I noticed with the hubs large basket was the weight of the gyro - his had a considerable amount more of gyro meat. Service was great! Lastly, canned Dr. Pepper was on point. Haven't had one of those in a long time. read more

Chicken kebab was fantastic!! My wife loved her chicken shawarma and add enough for both us! Customer service was outstanding!!

Hate to say it guys, but this was...not great. At 3pm on a Saturday, the boyfriend was craving gyros, so we stopped in here, after dealing with the defective pay box for parking (wasn't reading cards, and it was unclear if anyone was actually paying anyway). With just two other customers, the place was full, and there was only one guy working there. The boyfriend ordered a Greek salad with extra meat, I ordered my fave falafel sandwich and a side of hummus, and we paid on the iPad system (do NOT get me started on the automatic attempt to extract a tip!) and plopped down at the last available table. To be fair, the food was very nicely presented, though the cilantro and lime is something I've never seen at a Greek place -- did we fall through a wormhole into a Mexican joint? My falafel sandwich suffered the usual self-destruction, starting with losing a piece of falafel as soon as I picked it up. Maybe I should just quit ordering this, but it seems to me that something billed as a sandwich should be edible as a sandwich without half of it falling out. The falafel itself was very uniform, suggesting that it was frozen, and was a tad overdone, rendering it not terribly enjoyable. The yogurt sauce on the side was nice, but the sandwich itself was dry (I added the sauce and hummus). The hummus was a disappointment -- it needed more tahini, olive oil, and seasoning. A bit clumpy and super bland. The boyfriend enjoyed his salad, though the gyro meat was bland, bland, bland. Maybe I have just been spoiled by big city Middle Eastern food, but this cost $20 and was not that great, so I would not bother coming back. If this is the best Appleton has to offer, I think I'll just go without. read more

I thought the Gyro was good(off spit) and the tzatziki sauce. The French fries were Great salty, crispy, with oregano. There was cilantro and too much chopped romaine lettuce on top of gyro. My friend had the falafel sandwich with white rice, which was not great for close to $9.00...there were three fried small to medium falafel balls on top of pita bread with sliced tomatoes, red onions, and cilantro.
