Here's an update on Dr. Mata. (I thought I'd do one because I've been reading a ton of these reviews for my own benefit and his last review is from 2014.) He's currently in Urgent Care at Otay Mesa Kaiser so unfortunately he isn't available for primary care but he'll be there to help you out if you need urgent help.
With everything that's going on with Covid-19, I was very nervous to go to the doctor. I felt like it was an unnecessary exposure...plus I just don't enjoy going to the doctor. But, I've been in pain with my condition for so long that I decided to go. I also read the reviews of Otay Mesa Kaiser on all of the websites to try and assuage some of my fears and that didn't really help... At the end of the day, I knew I was going to go because of the pain.
I went to Urgent Care as early as possible, at 9am on a Saturday...after two useless phone consultations with Kaiser doctors who just told me to go grab OTC medicine. I was pleased to find that there was a whole system in place for screening folks in re Covid-19. I was happy to submit to a temperature reading as well as answering the questions that the RN had. (Got asked again by the intake and Dante, the nurse. Fine by me.) I had to do this before I even entered the building. At the facility, everyone had PPE, some more than others (some folks didn't wear face shields) and seemed to be adhering pretty closely to social distancing metrics.
I had an easy check-in. There was only one other person there and while I was being checked in, he was taken back. I waited about five minutes before the nurse, Dante, came to grab me for vitals. He was quick, efficient and friendly. He also told me the vitals as he went along. I loved that because I track them as a gauge of how I'm doing when it comes to managing my health. He clearly viewed me as a primary partner in keeping healthy.
I went to my "room" and even though he told me Dr. Mata would be there in 15 minutes, the doctor was ready to come in before I even had a chance to change into my gown. He entered, showed himself to be friendly and engaged. He looked for ways to put me at ease and connect. (Not necessary for me by any means, but definitely appreciated.) He took an extensive history from me, listening to all of my concerns and symptoms. Then, he told me what he thought, what he needed to examine and what he planned to do before going to get the materials with which to do it. What I needed done wasn't pleasant but he was as gentle as he could be and kept me informed the whole way through. Then, he ordered some blood work (Dante was GREAT with the needle) to check for something more serious. After that, he came and answered more of my questions after giving me a summation of what he saw and did and what the next steps were. I can be a pretty intense patient because (thankfully) I go to the doctor rarely. I tend to ask a ton of questions so that I can do my own research and also be able to communicate things clearly to other doctors. I also ask a lot of questions to quiet my anxiety about putting my health in the hands of another person.
In the end, he referred me to two specialists and I have to call them on Monday. So, I hope that my Kaiser experience (I'm a new member) keeps going great. One thing, one medication he prescribed needs to be compounded which means an order during business hours and a long wait (extra-long because of Covid-19) before I can get it. But, I can't expect him to do everything.
I'm very pleased with this experience and how it already has made me feel better to have my input valued in a health care setting. Now, if only I can find a Primary Care physician who's going to bring the same energy.
God bless you, Dr. Mata. Keep up the good work. read more
