Their menu and chefs changed and it's truly not any better than grocery store sushi at this point. Skip it.

This sushi place is down right fire. As in, I ordered twice in the last two weeks, good. As in, I'm still thinking about it days later and might order a third time in one month, good. Seriously, this isn't hyperbolic. If you haven't tried them yet. Go! They are a takeout only spot, but you can order their sushi next door at South Village Grille (which is also tasty). You can order for delivery on apps like UberEats too. That's where I ordered from (both times). While the prices tend to be on the steeper side compared to other sushi joints in Columbus, it's clearly of high value. The portions are also rather generous. I ordered the vegetarian gyoza and the shrimp tempura roll (also both times) and my tummy was fully satisfied. Obviously I would order this again, but I plan to explore the rest of their menu next time. They are doing something right!

One storefront, Two great restaurants. Flowing around the German Village area and craving for some sushi. Hence, checked out Jony's Sushi. They are a Pop-Up sushi concept reside within the South Village Grille. I really like the vibe within the restaurant, which is intimate and cozy. I ended up getting only sushi and would definitely coming back to try out the offering from SVG. Not a surprise, my sushi order coincidently have one common ingredient, salmon. My favorite would be the Finding Nori Roll. Fresh salmon with some spice from their spicy Kimchee sauce, balance out with the avocado and daikon salad.

As you can tell by the pictures another night of tuna tartare. Jonys has amazing food, as well as delicious cocktails, and desserts. Not sure if it's every week but their Monday special was fresh raw oysters. This has become our new "special occasion" dinner spot. Stop in and take a taste.

Jonys has the BEST sushi - highly recommend, it's our favorite sushi place!! They have a ton of options, and it's all made fresh. And if you're not into sushi, you can order off the South Village Grill menu restaurant, which is attached to Jonys. Their sushi dinner for two is good, and you can get the smaller nigiri/sashimi plates, and add and extra roll. The miso soup is great and they've got lots of yummy appetizers too - Spring rolls, edamame, potstickers and more. The poke bowl is worth a try as well.

Although I have yet to visit the establishment in person, I have ordered takeout several times. The rolls I've received have been enough to give this place the biggest thumbs up. Being from the Gulf Coast, I was a little nervous about experiencing fresh sushi in Ohio, but I was blown away. The Mr. Miyagi roll is amazing--I've already ordered it three times. Every other roll I've tried has been phenomenal as well. I will eventually visit the storefront, but based on what I've tasted so far, this is an easy 5 stars from me.

This is a great place for specialty rolls! They recently opened for dine-in and we were so excited to try out all of the rolls! The rolls are pretty big (decent rice to fish ratio) and not overly sauced. Very creative with names and combos. I've worked and dined at a couple sushi spots so I feel like it's the same roll just slight variations but Jonys was very innovative! Judging by the number of carry out orders, it seems like this will be a staple. We were too full after a couple of apps and 4 rolls - we had a few pieces left and we have big appetites. Plus they are nearby where I live! You can even order stuff from South Village Grille, which is connected to Jonys through a hallway. We did not choose to order anything but I was tempted by the apps from next door!

A new favorite sushi spot ! I am eating here again a week later! I can't get over how fresh and tasty it is!! Despite is being more costly, you are definitely getting your moneys worth. My last review shared my disappointment in my food just being thrown in there, presentation is on point tonight tho ... I see you ! Check it out you won't regret it

Hot jony. There's no tuna on the inside? Sad for a specialty roll
Julia J.

I've been coming here just for the sushi but the last few times have been majorly disappointing. I love the hot jony roll and it's been great a few times but tonight our sever told us there was a huge order in before us so it might be awhile. It was described as having, "tuna inside" and this is what it came out with. It was basically cream cheese and rice, as a "specialty roll". I ate one bite and asked the server if the amount of fish inside was normal and they took my plate, threw it away and didn't ask why I barely ate any of it. I want to support this place but the bad quality and service is starting to overpower the kind staff that doesn't seem to notice.

First time ordering Doordash from Jonys Sushi. The ordering was easy but the order arrived a little late. However it was accurate. I ordered the eel roll and a shrimp tempura roll (I love shrimp tempura). Everything was packaged nicely with plenty of soy sauce, wasabi, and lots of fresh ginger!!! I've never seen so much ginger! Thankfully I love it!! The sushi was good but not great. My biggest complaint is that most of the sushi fell apart so easily. The rolls needed to be better constructed. Every time I tried to pick it up with the chopsticks and dip into the soy sauce it would crumble apart. While it was good, I couldn't help but feel that I was eating sushi from Giant Eagle. For the price ($27.45), it just wasn't exactly what I hoped for. I'm not sure if I would order this again from take out.

Interior of restaurant

I have been waiting for a place like this! While I do love some of the other sushi spots in town, Jonys REALLY turns it up a notch on quality sushi. The space is close to the other Thurman hot spots and is super small but so cute inside. I think they only have seating for four couples so it is mostly a takeout place. Regardless, I loved the interior! I ordered some nigiri as well as a sushi roll. I was surprised at how generous the proportions were for the price point! Everything was super fresh and absolutely delicious. I am mad at myself because I didn't take any photos of my food once I got home but that's because I couldn't wait one second more to dive in. The food was both beautiful and delicious. I cannot wait to come back!

Spicy Salmon roll

I love South Village Grill, so I dinned in on that side this time but ordered food off Jonys Sushi menu. I started with the potstickers which I've had once before and are very tasty and crispy. The sauce with it had a sweet orange flavor. For my meal I ordered the spicy salmon roll. With the first bite I could tell I just didn't like the fish flavor, it seemed a little off to me. There also wasn't very much spicy mayo. I prefer my sushi just a little bit smaller so it's bite sized too. Maybe it's just me idk. So this place isn't going to be my go to for sushi unfortunately, but I would deff still come back to South Village Grill and order the potstickers.

BEST POKE BOWL IN COLUMBUS!!! I have been wanting to try Jony's Sushi for quite some time now and am disappointed that it took me so long to get over there! Now I am going to have to stop myself from going over there every day. It is seriously that good! The first thing that you have to know is that the entrance of Jony's Sushi is at South Village Grill. I think that I read on the door that Jony's is open from 12 PM - 4 PM daily; however, I could have read that wrong. You also place your order at the South Village Grill bar. I ended up just dining in at the bar while I was there. I felt "safe" while I was there. They have the bar spots protected by plastic dividers and they are practicing social distancing with their dine-in booths as well. I ordered the Mother of Dragon Roll and the Sweet and Spicy Poke Bowl. The Mother of Dragon Roll was great and is pretty large in size! I really enjoyed it. I think the wasabi aioli really makes this roll! It was so good! The Sweet and Spicy Poke Bowl was hands down the best poke bowl I have ever had. The bowl had so many great flavors that blended really well together! From the cucumber (which tasted like Korean cucumber kimchi) to the cilantro to the marinated hamachi and salmon - everything tasted so fresh and flavorful! I also paired a glass of sparkling wine with all of the spiciness and it was perfect! While the items on the menu are a little pricy, I do think that you get what you pay for. Again, everything was super fresh and super tasty! I will definitely be back again soon!

Average sushi, but proximity makes it easier to obtain. Good connection with South Village next door. Cornered market, no pun intended.

The food comes out pretty quick considering they are making the sushi by order. I love their sushi options. If I can, I'll get the otoro (fatty tuna) and it's some of the best around Columbus that I've tried so far. They also have delicious cocktails that are well balanced. The only downside is trying to find parking since it's in the Short North. If you're lucky, you can snag a street parking spot near the restaurant.

Midway through my meal, they came around to light a candle at the table, which added such an intimate touch, and gave cozy date night energy in the best way. In fact, I believe I was sitting next to a couple having their first date. 2. Plating (4.5/5) The presentation did not disappoint. Everything came out looking polished and thoughtfully arranged. The edamame stood out because they generous with the flaky salt, which I personally loved. Sometimes places hold back, but this was well seasoned. 3. Customer Service (2.5/5) This is where things started to fall apart a bit. I stood at the front for about 12 minutes before being acknowledged, and the restaurant was nearly empty. I had to make eye contact with someone in the kitchen just to be seated. Service at the table wasn't much better. It took about 15 minutes just to get my drink order taken (which I had to flag the waitress down to order), and by that time I was ready to order my whole meal. I ordered an appetizer along with a couple of sushi rolls and some sake. I'm not sure if the waitress wasn't thinking about it, but she brought my rolls out before she even brought out my appetizer or my drink. The inconsistency was noticeable and took away from the experience. 4. Overall Taste (4.5/5) The food absolutely carried! I ordered a sweet potato roll and the Hoonie Roll, which ended up being my favorite part of the meal. Both were fresh, flavorful, and really well-balanced. Paired with the edamame and sake, everything came together nicely. 5. Overall Experience (3.9/5 ) Taking everything into account, the experience lands just under a 4. The food and atmosphere were strong, but the service created a noticeable disconnect. It's definitely one of those places where you'd go back for the food, but you'd hope the service catches up next time.

We were there around noon on a Sunday so they were not very busy but that was okay with us. I had made a Resy reservation because they recommended it. The interior is decorated very well and the light is slightly dimmed for a nice ambiance! They have really nice, and solid, dinnerware and glassware. We started with the crab rangoon tarts, 3 in an order, and the edamame. The tart shells were so buttery and the filling was the usual luscious crab mix. The edamame comes with salt or spicy, we chose salt. There was enough for all 3 of us. The drinks we chose were the Gin & Tea and the Lychee Martini. Both were delicious and the foam on both were handshaken and so creamy. The Gin & Tea was a surprise winner and I highly recommend it. We ordered 5 rolls. The Naruto, Center, Fantastic, Tiger and Dancing Salmon. I love Naruto rolls without the rice and nori, instead wrapped in thinly sliced cucumber. This one was well made and stayed together when using my chopsticks. It allows the fish to shine! The Center Roll had spicy tuna and a topping of avocado, masago and spicy mayo. It's what you would expect and well done. The Tiger Roll has a mix inside and on top. Each bite was a little different and delicious. The Fantastic Roll was just that! It had a lobster salad inside and slightly scorched Japanese scallops on top. The smokiness of the scallop was surprising and delicate and complemented the sweeter lobster salad. The Dancing Salmon roll had eel inside and salmon outside. I'm not a huge eel fan but this roll I ate and enjoyed. I hadn't had good restaurant sushi since NYC and this was up there with it. And after that soft opening with a regular menu, this week they introduced an all-you-can-eat menu as well. So of course I got there as soon as I could. Quite an extensive menu for AYCE too, though not as big as their standard one. And full of interesting stuff. Nigiri, raw rolls, cooked rolls, deep-fried rolls, specialty rolls, apps, ramen, hibachi, and more. I wanted to try everything, but even though I arrived hungry I just couldn't. Maybe 25 years ago I could have eaten twice as much, and when the students hear about this they will clean them out. It's just down from where Japanese Oriental Restaurant used to be, and I used to save up and pig out there with my friends. Now I eat a bit less, but I still figure I had about $60 worth of sushi for $30. I started with seaweed salad- big portion, and very tasty. Fresh and a little spicy. Then unagi- two big pieces, excellent, tender and flavorful. Then maguro- good, melt in your mouth. Next I tried their "dragon eggs"- deep fried avocado with kani and tuna. OMG. Again, a big portion (two whole avocados, halved and stuffed. Finally, two big rolls: the High Street roll with spicy tuna, and the Seashore roll with salmon, kani, and more. Wow. Big, and tasty. Best sushi in town? No, but up there. Really good. Service was great. They open at noon, at least on weekdays, and I was the first one in. The decor is cool- it's an old house, and they have made it modern but with vintage touches. The bathrooms and waiting area are super cool. There's a bar off to one side, a sushi bar in back, and lots of sleek but comfy seating. Also a huge patio and courtyard out front. Free street parking out front (except during rush hour.) Also a small lot in back. Get here. If you like sushi, or other Japanese food, you'll like it. If you like a bargain, you'll love it. $27, yes, not cheap; but for sushi it's not bad, and for AYCE sushi it is a steal. A cool place to hang out, not far from campus, and drink, and eat good food till you're stuffed.

Atmosphere was modern and soothing. You can get ramen, cooked dishes like tempura, salads, all kinds of things. There's a full bar as well, and areas with cozy or romantic seating. The design was actually pretty cool, you could eat with a group or sit up at a bar by yourself and feel very comfortable either way. The sushi menu itself includes more traditional Japanese sushi, which honestly is what I'd recommend from the AYCE menu. They even have sashimi, which is cut thinly- which is fine, if you want more you can just order more, that prevents excessive waste. Most AYCE places wouldn't offer sashimi anyway. But the traditional sushi, sashimi and rolls were the ones we liked best. The more Americanized rolls with the alternative (non-nori) wraps were not as delicious, in our opinion. We couldn't figure out what it was, whether it was the wraps or an ingredient in the chopped sushi roll fillings. But there's a ton on this menu that was good. Will eat here again. Oh and a short note on large groups- maybe this is not the spot to go with a massive group? It's more of an intimate dining experience, although they do seem to allow big groups. I only mention this because I saw a negative review about slow service for large groups before we went and then the evening we went a group of maybe 10-12 college students impatiently waited by the door to be seated, even though the servers were polite and had to wait for multiple tables to clear at the same time to push together seat such a large group in a smallish restaurant- the patrons kept coming in and trying to sit at random tables before it was their turn. If you have a massive group I'd say split into multiple tables or maybe choose a different, larger or chain restaurant, like El Vaquero or Buffalo Wild Wings? Anyway I hope they left a good tip because the workers were very professional and the group was very large and very impatient.
