Pluses: Black owned restaurant serving cultural staples, plus foods for people who don't want Southern. Ambiance featured soul music, and at one point was playing Shaft! I can dig it. You're not left wanting for food quantity or quality. Plenty of shrimp in the grits, for example. Server was very pleasant to talk to with a little Southern twang to her voice. Why not five stars: Flavor needs deepening. For example, in the South I'm used to seeing okra chopped and breaded before being fried. Maybe more oily that way, more carbs... but more flavor as a result. I had the pulled chicken mac, which was a bit smaller of a dish overall (a bit intentional on my part) - and while the cheese flavors run deep, the meat did not. Shrimp and grits, I took a quick sample of my friend's grits and... I bet you can guess my finding there. Still, a very nice change from the usual Northern selection of foods. I would not hesitate to say Sweet T's is authentic and a nice visit if you're in town. You'll be paying a pretty penny wherever you eat, so you can tag this one on your list.

The wait staff was fantastic in waiting on us as well as offering us a seat immediately upon entry. There were many servers on the floor, availing if anyone needed anything. We mentioned it was our first time, the quality of explanation of the menu lacked. We didn't really understand or enjoy what we ate. Think it's important to mention we are both black women from the American South. Maybe we ordered wrong (which I don't believe in but .... I'll digress) Maybe it was a bad day Maybe I'll try again!! They were extra crispy on the outside and had great flavor. I had the bbq chicken which was good, and tender, the skin wasn't very crispy tho and I ended up taking it off which left me w/o much bbq sauce for the chicken meat. The other two people enjoyed their fried chicken. The waffle probably could've been cooked w bit longer. (He went w the traditional buttermilk but there are a few flavors you can choose from). There was so much food that we each had leftovers! Another table asked for the music to be turned down. Overall, it was good and I'd come back.

Once seated and prior to ordering, we received a lovely basket of sweet potato muffins and a buttermilk biscuit drizzled with honey. They were absolutely delicious! The very friendly chef came to our table to welcome us, and talk about these special muffins. We were also warmly greeted by the restaurant manager. As for our meal, we had 2 orders of the chicken and waffles, collard greens, and macaroni and cheese. The chicken was hot, crispy, and perfectly seasoned, and the waffles were light and fluffy. The macaroni and cheese was also delicious, but the greens were very heavily salted. Overall, the portions were generous. As for the live entertainment, it perhaps begins later in the afternoon, maybe after 2pm? Our reservation was at 1pm, and the guitarist arrived just as we were finishing our meal. My one critique is the reservation process. The only take reservations by phone, and during the limited hours that they are open. The person with whom I made my reservation made some errors. Fortunately, another staff member contacted me twice the day prior to my reservation to clarify the time and date. Having the ability to use an online reservation platform would have been easier and more accurate.

It had this loungey vibe with gold and dark blue tones and selective dimming that gave an upscale yet inviting and friendly vibe. Nice large bar with screens of sports and news for patrons and good music. I'm for it. II. FOOD (5/5) Yo this place ain't joking. Hard to find fresh veggies, but they had some. Peach and Strawberry Sweet Tea were great, though definitely sweet. Peach was slightly more refreshing for what was to come. Cornbread (APP, $9, 5/5) - Some of the best cornbread all around. Big but moist with decent crumbling, and so good with homemade strawberry jam. Cornerstone of the meal here. It's BIG so you can definitely share. Somehow it was even better the next day(?!) Sweet T's Fried Shrimp (APP, $19, 5/5) - Perfectly breaded and fried golden brown without being too heavy, this one was surprisingly delicious with the dips. Very good reco from our server. Fresh Baby Kale, Pear, and Goat Cheese Salad (APP, $14, 4/5) - Very much needed some sprinkling of greens. Pretty good though portion could be a bit larger. Catfish Nuggets (APP, $16, 3/5) - This one we didn't care too much for. Bit salty, one-dimensional. Stone Ground Cheddar Cheese Grits (APP, $10, 5/5) - ROCKET SHIP! This was literally the BEST GRITS I've ever eaten, and I've eaten enough to fill a bath tub! Wow! It had the perfect level of buttery, robust deep cheddar flavor with bits of crispy bites within, creamy smooth texture, right level of seasoning, and crazy level of addictiveness. I found myself rationing it with every other item on the table. WHAT?! I could write an essay on this one but it is ridiculously good I would come back again and again just to eat this. Grits done well, y'all. Grits done well living his best life, right here. Just writing about it makes me drool. III. SERVICE (5/5) I forgot about service because I was writing about 'em grits but our server lady was pleasant, made great recos, and took our money. So she was good! The place just oozes with neighborly homey charm, and there were repeat diners telling us this here is what's up, so a great sign. I really enjoyed Sweet T's a lot more than I thought I would. Its great southern food, special vibe and attentive service all combine to be a winning neighborly combination here in Teaneck. Show them some love and eat 'em grits. You won't regret it.

The collard greens definitely wins the competition, but everything else still comes in a close second. The dessert was loaded with peaches with just the right amount of cinnamon.
