For our last meal, we decided to try out Jones Bar-B-Que which specializes in southern Texas style BBQ. They're next door to Patisserie Daniel with a second location out in Langford. We dropped in on a Tuesday (noon). There's a couple tables inside. Order at the counter, pay, then wait for your name to be called. Sauces (ketchup, BBQ, malt vinegar) and cutlery are by the drink station. One daily happy hour (8:00pm-9:00pm) where sandwiches are 50% off with the purchase of a boozy beverage. - 3 Meats plate ($28.00) - brisket, pork ribs, pork butt, fries, slaw, mini brioche and pickles. Pork ribs were good. Pork butt and brisket were on the dry side. Meats lacked a strong, smoky note. Fries were fine but the slaw was bland, practically flavourless. Would try the Jones big crunch sandwich (fried chicken) if we were to return. 3.5 stars.

COVID #45 Disclaimer: I smoke my own meat at home, so I came here to see how it stacks up. I don't know what wood they use but mine has a heavier wood smoke flavour. That said, the food here is good. I just prefer a more robust smokiness. Smoked pork butt and brisket were both very tender and flavourful. I didn't use any sauces. The brisket was not too dry and I got a portion of the flat, which is the leaner part of the brisket. Fried chicken was a bit underseasoned. The chicken sandwich was slightly spicy and a solid choice. Worth a visit.

We came by Jones BBQ based on the reviews from Yelp and left a little disappointed. We ended up getting half a pound each of brisket and pork butt and although it was good, I felt it was a bit dry. The most disappointing thing definitely would have had to be the corn bread as it was dry and hard.

Half pound brisket. Melt-in-your-mouth good! Amazing pickles too

The best beef brisket I've ever had! Melt in your mouth and not overly salted. The chocolate pudding and banana pudding are so tasty, too. The totchos is a heavenly creation. My brain is drooling as I type this. It's like nachos but with tater tots. Greasy and delicious. Bad for you but so delicious. The prices are extremely fair for the quality and quantity. Took one star off because the chicken wings and chicken thighs are just average tasting.

The halibut is perfect-just like I like it. The pieces are generous. One piece is plenty for the average person. The halibut is BC caught, which is great. Tasted fresh and delicious. I like the fresh tasting coleslaw. It isn't that gluggy sweet sugar & mayo combo you get at many places. It was just a simple cut up cabbage nicely seasoned. Maybe it had a little something else on it. Expect a line whenever you go because the word is out. The wait staff was friendly and working hard to keep the line moving. We found a chair up against a narrow wooden "bar" facing the water. It was quite warm so we appreciated the shade of an umbrella.

I got the albacore tuna and tempura cod tacones which were decently priced and filling - 2 was more than enough for a nice meal. The albacore tuna was prepared medium and fresh and flavorful, and the tempura cod is nicely battered. Both shared similar ingredients like the slaw and it was hard to differentiate the different sauces. Line was long - even on Saturday 4:30pm, it was a 15 min queue and another 10 minutes for food. Lots of ample seating outdoors only, so I can imagine it being more busy on a nicer day like when I visited.

I can find an option for each of them, no matter how picky they're feeling and I can also get myself something that will satisfy me. Not a bad job for a mall food court restaurant. I recently tried the Koryo fries and they were fantastic (okay I wasn't looking for something healthy for myself that day, parental double standard). They asked if I wanted them spicy and I said yes, expecting the usual little tingle that are other cultures interpretation of Caucasian tolerance for spice. This time I got the burn I wanted. If you find yourself in the mall and hungry, hit up Koryo for some decent fast food.

Fast forward to the food court (yes, I am easily convinced). Scanning around I didn't see anything tasty or interesting at all until I landed on a small store in the far corner -- Koryo. With an exterior screaming "Asian fusion!!!" I assumed it would be some terrible offspring of mall and Asian fusion. Turns out, the food wasn't bad at all. PROS: + All barbecued meats are marinated, Korean style and then grilled + Meals come with healthy helpings of rice and side dishes that you can choose; side dishes are authentic and really good + Kimchee is particularly good at this place + Some innovative Korean-American menu items CONS: - Although this is a good Korean fix to get in downtown, the meat doesn't seem to be marinated as well as going to an actual joint that serves Korean BBQ; speaking of which, I heard there is a Korean BBQ place on Fisgard St.? - Expect to pay a decent price for the food, although you can opt for the cheaper sandwiches, forgoing the lunch plates
