Late Tuesday, just before our flight, we learned that the required CT scan had not been completed as prescribed. Without it, Dr. Lutton could not proceed. His schedule was booked solid, and we feared the worst. But we reached out to his office, explained the urgency, and hoped for a miracle. Enter Valerie, Dr. Lutton's surgical coordinator--and the unsung hero of this story. Valerie and the entire team at Washington Circle Orthopedics sprang into action. While we were boarding our flight Wednesday morning, we received word that they had secured a CT scan appointment in DC the day before surgery. Valerie instructed us to drop off the CD immediately after the scan so Dr. Lutton could personally review and complete the templating between his other surgeries. The coordination, compassion, and sheer determination of this team were awe-inspiring. The surgery went forward as scheduled, without a hitch. Dr. Lutton's skill and precision were matched only by the warmth and professionalism of his staff. Today, my mother is recovering beautifully, free from the constant pain that had plagued her for years. She calls it the best birthday gift she could have hoped for. This wasn't our first experience with Dr. Lutton's brilliance. Three and a half years ago, he performed a reverse shoulder replacement on my right shoulder and my mother's left shoulder. Both procedures were flawless, and the outcomes life-changing. That history made it all the more important for us to return to him--and he and his team delivered once again. As a result of the surgery I experienced a septic staph aureus infection of the blood stream. The infection was induced in the surgery . I was readmitted to the hospital through the ER where a second surgery was necessary to ":wash out": the original site. I was in the hospital for another 5 days with high dose intravenous anti biotics . The antibiotics were continued at home for 6 weeks. But again the infection came back after the antibiotic therapy at home ended,. Again back in the hospital for another 5 days and another "wash out ": surgery followed by IV antibiotics which continued for several months. Now in 2025 I learn that the base of the fusion did not fuse to the bone. It came loose. Now I have to go back for a fusion "revision" surgery with a year of recovery. A horrible experience that continues .

Dr. K performed my knee surgery and has been a great ortho doc for follow-up and future options for my other knee (my legs aren't straight (genetics)). His super knowledgable and does not recommend unnecessary tests, surgery, meds, etc. He will even go so far as to recommend physical therapy before advising on injections, surgery, etc. He also asks what you prefer and gives the options/possible outcomes with those options. He listens and gives his professional medical option after he hears what's going on with you. He also performed a rotator cuff surgery on my shoulder. Excellent bedside manners, explains everything, doesn't talk over you and follows up with you.

He was rude and made assumptions about my activities without checking to confirm. My treatment plan was 2 handouts with stretches. I asked if someone would show me any of them and they explicitly said no. But I could call with questions. Additionally, I expressed that I had pain in my ankle and hip. Past physical therapists said the hip pain was because of compensation from my ankle. Dr Stein it likely was something different but gave no recommendations for how to address it independently. Just come back in a month if it still bothers you. Stay away!

I went back to him every 2 to 3 months for that year explaining to him that I was diligent with my physical therapy and taking the medication he told me to take, and yet the hip wasn't getting any better. But He continued to insist it was ongoing inflammation for over a year. Since he wasn't willing to consider what else it might be or offer any other solutions to help me, I went out and got a second opinion. So I saw another surgeon, and after he operated on me, he determined that I had extensive scarring inside my hip binding the hip flexor muscles to the hip capsule. After he removed all the scar tissue from my hip, it was much better and pain free. Dr. Wolff refused to consider that anything else may be going on, and so he wasn't able to help me. While a nice man, I found that he was rushed during our appointments and he wasn't always in the moment. So I don't feel he was always listening to what I had to say. Regardless, him continuing to insist my pain was due to inflammation for an entire year wasn't really him thinking about what else the problem might be or to consider other solutions.

I previously had the same surgery on my right foot with a different orthopedic surgeon, and the recovery was extremely long and painful. Because of that experience, I was honestly nervous going into this procedure. However, Dr. Schipper completely changed my expectations. I experienced minimal pain and very little swelling, and the healing process was fast and smooth. The incision work was excellent -- only three small incisions that healed beautifully. The difference in recovery compared to my prior surgery was night and day. Dr. Schipper is not only highly skilled but also very kind and reassuring. He takes time to explain everything and makes you feel prepared and comfortable before surgery. The office staff is also wonderful -- responsive, organized, and supportive throughout the entire process. You can truly tell he is very experienced in this procedure. Prior to the procedures, I could not walk due to the intense arthritic pain in both of my hips. I was very active prior to my arthritic hip pain and now after the surgeries, I am able to work out again at the same 6 days /week 100% intensity level. I have not had 1 second of pain or discomfort! Nov 2021 - Bike accident resulting in "skier's thumb" aka torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). I…read moresaw a MedStar orthopedist in Jan/Feb who X-rayed it said it was torn but would heal. It didn't get better, so I saw Dr. Pan (OrthoVirginia) in April 2022. She ordered an MRI, said my ligament was string-thin, and strongly recommended surgery asap. This would've been expensive and inconvenient, so I visited WOSM in June 2022 for a 3rd opinion. Dr. Barth explained that the MRI showed my ligament is fine (acknowledging that the joint was still a little swollen and achy), and for some reason UCL injuries can take a year to fully recover. He said we could revisit surgery that fall if it's still problematic. I almost teared up with relief that I could avoid surgery (and that he was not a profit-seeking surgeon). Patience paid off, as I now have full strength, range of motion, and only occasional sensitivity at the extremes. I suspect lingering issues would have been worse if I had surgery.

I had an appointment with Dr. John Ferrell on September 12, 2024, at the ROSM Washington, DC office…read morebut left before seeing him because I was not seen in a timely manner and left after an inappropriate time to wait. This is the second time I have experienced this problem with ROSM including previously in July with another doctor in the practice. Both times I was taken to an examining room in a timely manner and was left to wait in the room. After over 30 minutes, I left the room and spoke to one of the staff to ask if there was a problem. Both times I was told that the doctor was with another patient and would be in to see me in a while. My first complaint, therefore, is that it is not the patient's responsibility to determine why there is a delay. The doctor should instruct his/her staff to let the patient know that there is a delay and what are the patient's alternatives. Both times the staff person apologized for which I appreciate their apologies. An apology by a staff person, however, does not indicate that there will be any change in how waiting patients are informed of delays. On September 12, 2024, the staff person told me that the doctor was in a room with no clock, which is not an excuse but demonstrates poor planning by the doctor. Therefore, my second complaint is that the ROSM Washington, DC office is poorly managed and fails to properly plan appointment times for patients. I will not be returning to this practice for any reason.
