I have only visited with one other Chiropractor a few years back, and it was less than a pleasant experience. So, needless to stay that I was pretty skeptical to visit with another one until I met Dr. David Kopelove. This guy is the REAL deal!! What does that mean? It means that there aren't any fancy offices with high-tech (in other words - USELESS) equipment or crappy speeches to keep patients coming back week over week, but leaving just slightly better than they came. Dr. Kopelove really knows what he's doing. This guy laid me on his strange little table that was nothing like I had ever seen, tapped the bottoms of me feet a few times, and ever so slightly ran his fingers down my back and said "I know what's wrong." The table started bouncing up and down while the Doc pushed on my back, side, and legs for about 15-20 minutes and the pain that I had for the past many weeks was all gone. I'm not joking, He could tell how I was sleeping, and advised to never sleep on my stomach again; so I didn't. I returned to his office three days later for another sessions and felt even better than I had before. Never once did the Dr. attempt to sell me "extra" services or products that I didn't need, or schedule me for another appointment in the next week. There was absolutely no pressure from him or the lovely front-desk assistant. Dr. Kopelove seemed extremely pleased to have been able to take away my pain and advised to "start listening to your body and think about what it feels like before your pain gets that bad again because that's when you know to schedule your next appointment." I visited Dr. Kopelove for the first time last week, and I regret to report that I did not have a positive experience there. When I enter a practitioner's office, I expect to be acknowledged and greeted. Upon entering this office, the two women seated behind the receptionist desk stared blankly at me like they were upset that I had disturbed them. I let them know I had an appointment, handed them the forms I'd filled out in advance, and gave them me driver's license and insurance card. During this entire process, they said less than ten words to me; however, they were happy to resume talking to one another once I sat in the waiting area. Since it was a workday, I had intentionally made an appointment in the morning (9:30) rather than in the afternoon when some practitioners tend to be running behind. Despite the fact that I must have been only the 2nd or 3rd patient of the day, I had to wait 15 minutes past my appointment time before I was seen. As part of the registration process, I was asked to fill out several forms about my pain and health history, as well as mark on a diagram where I was feeling pain. I expected that my first appointment would include some time discussing these forms and the pain that I was feeling. Instead, Dr. Kopelove barely glanced at the forms and asked me to tell him what was wrong. I had the opportunity to talk for approximately 1-2 minutes ( and even then, I felt like I was being rushed) before he started talking and telling me what he thought was wrong with me. I did not feel like he was listening to me or taking what I was saying seriously. His manner and tact left much to be desired. He told me I had a "bad" shoulder, "bad" feet, "bad" ankles and "bad" posture and (again, without understanding or acknowledging my pain) almost instantly began recommending orthotics as a solution. While I acknowledge that correcting one's stance can have positive impacts on the rest of the body, I felt like I was being pitched to by a salesman. He even pulled out a picture of himself from when he was in a coma and had serious spinal injuries...quipping that orthotics were the only thing that helped him become pain free. While this might be true, it came across like those testimonials you see in infomercials. He dismissed my main issue - that I was having excruciating sciatic nerve pain twice a month that feels like I am being electrocuted in the butt for 1-2 days on end - by saying that he thought it wasn't the nerve, and that it just had to do with my bad posture getting my alignment off. When I insisted that his interpretation was incorrect, he asked me if I'd seen my gynecologist and had them do tests "since the pain I was talking about was in the area of my lady parts." First of all, the last time I checked, the place where I have pain - in my butt and hamstrings - is not in the "lady parts" area. Secondly, I've had leg aches from PMS (which I think is what he was implying) and it's a completely different pain. Lastly, I have yearly checkups with the gynecologist and have never had any irregularities. In short, he was intentionally and blatantly dismissing what I am 100% sure is sciatic nerve pain so he could keep blaming my "bad" body parts and posture for the pain I have. During the treatment part of the visit, he kept telling me where I would have pain in different parts of my body. Instead of asking "Do you have pain here?" and "How does this feel?" he kept saying, "I know you have pain here," and "I bet you have pain here," and "I can tell you that it's going to hurt when I press here." While he was correct in many of the instances, his tone was inappropriate and reflected a smug rather than a caring attitude. Further, at some point he pressed very hard on my costal cartilage in my upper chest, where I did not report pain and where I have very little fat or muscle. He definitely pressed that area too hard because several days later it aches and is very painful to the touch. When I got up at the end of the treatment, he said, "How do you feel now? It feels better right?" like he had just performed some magic. While I did feel slightly better at that moment, I'd argue that if I'd taken my $40 co-pay to a masseuse for a half hour massage, I'd walk away feeling much better too. After the treatment, they applied electrical stimulation to my lower back for ten minutes. He also sent me away with a prescription to get X-rays of my lower back at an imaging center, with the caveat that he "really didn't think anything was wrong there." In sum, when it comes to my health and my body, it's really important for me to feel like I'm being listened to and that the practitioner takes me seriously. I want to feel like the practitioner has my best interest in mind, rather than his own ulterior motives or sales ambitions. Unfortunately, I did not feel any of these ways in my visit and cannot recommend this office to other people. read more

Dr. Kopelove has been a tremendous help during my recent bout of sciatica. He took the time to fully understand my issues and shows great skill in his physical manipulations. Dr. K is not a "crack your back and send you home" chiropractor. His methods are his own and they work. My symptoms are gone, and now I see him to keep them away. Wish I would have seen Jenni B.'s review before going to Dr. Kopelove. Her experience was telling. Mine was not as bad, but being a bit skeptical of chiropractors, I normally would go with a strong recommendation from a friend. Alas, I was desperate, after more than a week of pain and couldn't get in touch with those friends. Dr. Kopelove also spent all of 1-2 mins with me before starting his manipulations. He didn't explain what he was going to do and put me on a table that sort of jerked me around as he put pressure on spots he was convinced were tight on me. I was also surprised that he presumed I would feel fine after it all -- which, as in Jenni's case, I felt about as fine as a probably would have with a massage. But, what made me most skeptical was that, after the heated electrodes placed on may back, when I asked what I should do, he said to come back the next week. No time taken to explain stretches, suggested exercises, try not to sit for XX length of time, how I should sleep. I asked all that... My friends' recommendations came in after the fact. I was in a major head-on car accident 9 years ago and I still suffer but not even close to where I was before my 1ST visit. After many of other treatment centers through the years, the 2 years I spent with Dr. K (as I call him) and The Back Pain and Headache Centers brought back the feeling in my arms and the strength back in them at that. I have been using his services for almost 9 years and I could not be happier. Let me be more specific. Over the years my back has had some issues. The best part about Back Pain and Heachache Centers is Dr. Kopelove won't let you leave until you feel better. He spends sometime 45 minutes or more working on me and I always leave better than when I came in. 9 Years ago, I had severe tennis elbow after cortisone shots and 6 weeks of physical therapy it actually got worse. I called Back Pain and Headache Centers and within 4 appts. Good as new. Recently, I had fallen on the ice. I went to Urgent Care and they said I had bruised ribs and a bruised kidney. Then I went to my primary and he took x-rays and came up with the same diagnosis. Both said time is the only way to heal these wounds. I called him and he said he can't treat the bruised kidney but let him work on the ribs. I was in the worst pain on my life after this fall, within 5 sessions I almost almost back to normal. My wife was in an automobile accident and he ended up working with her insurance company and rescued her back to health. She uses him on a regular basis when she has back pain. I am forever grateful to find Dr. Kopelove at the Back Pain and Headache Centers. I had a motorcycle accident a few years ago that did catastrophic damage to the ligaments in my left leg, especially the ankle. I had gotten some physical therapy at that time, but recently I had severe pain up from my ankle and leg and into my back. The ankle had very limited movement. I started going to the Back Pain & Headache Center in Laurel, a couple of months ago, but I quickly realized that I had not gotten proper treatment in the past. After treatments by Dr. K, I have regained ankle mobility and the pain in my leg, hips, and back have subsided. I really like the fact that Dr. K has a background in engineering and is certified in accident reconstruction, as well as, biomechanics. He really understands my unique injury and what therapies to treat me with. I began to feel much better after the first treatment. I know I have more work to do to strengthen up these areas with exercises I have as my 'homework', but I know with Dr. K, I will continue onto full recovery. Only my best words for Dr. Kopelove! I call him Mr. Magic. He has solved my shoulder problem in just two treatments and that was my problem for a year. So many pt before and doctor suggest steroid injection and surgery at the end but, with Dr. Kopelove's treatment I have got my range of motion back. I am very happy to know dr. Wow, I am totally suprised with the previous reviewer's assessment of Dr. Koelove. I've been going to Dr. Kopelove off and on since 2001. During the period of 2001 and 2002 I saw him 3-4 times a week for very painful sciatic in both legs. He was a life saver. I have been on maintenance now, once a year, for the last 10 years. The receptionist is very friendly and has been there longer than I've been seeing the doctor. The doctor's confidence about what is causing one's pain can put one off, but it is not meant that way. And yes the pressure can be painful at times, just like a massage can be painful if you are not use to the manipulation. I would not trust anyone else to crack my back or neck or make adjustments. read more

I would highly recommend Dr. Kopelove. After two sessions, he relieved the moderate back, shoulder, and neck pain I had been suffering from for about six months. During those six months, I had massages at least twice a month to try to help my discomfort but they didn't help as I had expected. I had never been to a chiropractor before Dr. Kopelove, and I was happily surprised when I noticed an immediate improvement after our first session. I don't usually write reviews but wanted to share my experience in case others are experiencing persistent problems that a chiropractor may be able to address. I am not disputing other reviewers' experiences, but I should note that Dr. Kopelove did take time to talk with me before the adjustments about chiropractics and what kind of treatment he was about to do. At the end of the session, he provided information on stretches I could do at home. I wish to express my thanks and gratitude for Dr. Kopelove for the remarkable progress I made under his care. His prescription orthotics have improved my posture, hip mobility and even my jaw pain. Yes uneven legs over time will cause pain in your hips all the way to your jaw(TMJ). I am a 50 year old male who has arthritis in my left knee as a result of a torn ACL from wrestling while a cadet at West Point. As a child I also had a slipped left hip which needed to be pinned. The end result was my left leg being about 1/2 inch shorter than my right. After serving in the Army I switched careers to finance and with the new lifestyle and reduced physical activity, the pain and and joint issues became more pronounced. My orthopedic surgeon had prescribed a heel wedge for my left shoe. I was "blessed" to have Dr. Kopelove as a neighbor who initially spotted my pain. If you read some reviews here the clients expressed a dissatisfaction that Dr. Kopelove seemed presumptuous. Let me tell you Dr. Kopelove approaches his job like an engineer with a project at hand and gets right to the point. He knows what he is talking about. After a year of treatment with the new orthotics my pain was greatly reduced and my posture straightened out. The special sauce here is not just the orthotic but Dr. Kopelove's skill in fine tuning it for you. I have been to other podiatrists since moving back North and their static orthotics have not done anything for me. Dr. Kopelove's approach is a dynamic one. He focuses on correcting your gait. Once he gets you setup correctly and improves your posture and gait; your body will un-torque as you walk. Even my TMJ jaw loosened up. Since having from relocated back to the NYC metro area I found out that the most high tech (translate $$$$) Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC uses the same orthotics Dr. Kopelove has been prescribing.
