Years ago, we hired John and company to replace tile on outdoor steps. Initially seemed helpful and ready to get the job done.
The person who placed the tiles did a nice job cutting and placing them, but the grout color was inconsistent when it dried. They attributed this to (their decision) to do the job in bad / rainy weather. John had the tile guy dig up the grout and reapply. The 3 day project ended up taking several weeks. In the end, the steps looked really nice after this was done.
Next, they tried to seal the steps but did not follow the instructions on the sealant can (#1, test first, #2, apply thinly and then wipe down). Many thick coats of the sealant were applied and left to dry. The sealant did not dry but became tacky and slick. We tracked it into our house and ended up with towels draped over all of our entry way steps for probably a month.
John repeatedly sent workers to our house unannounced to do work after being told that this was not okay because the work blocked access to our house, so it needed to be coordinated.
John came back a few times and tried a few things. In the end, he decided to give up and ignore us. Before he did that, he complained to us about being out $150 for the sealant that messed up the steps. We had paid thousands and the steps were left with drip marks all over them.
Live and learn. I don't think he had the experience to do the job right. He may be amazing with trees/plants, but hardscaping seems to be another story. Eventually John got frustrated and gave up. It was all very strange. read more
