I brought in a brand new, expensive Filson double-layer bridle leather belt -- still with tags -- to have three holes added. This was on June 20, 2025. I made it very clear that the new holes needed to match the original ones exactly -- in spacing, alignment, and edge quality. Unfortunately, the result was extremely poor: the holes were uneven, misaligned, and visibly damaged the belt. This was not just disappointing -- it rendered the belt unwearable. I expected professional craftsmanship from a shop with a long-standing reputation, but received the opposite. I will not return and cannot recommend this place for any precision leather work. read more

Decent quality work. Very high prices. $85 to resole leather flats. $60 to stitch leather clogs. $40 to add a toe patch to reinforce one sneaker toe (not the pair). Terrible customer service. Expect to pay up front and wait several weeks for the repair. read more

Shoe repair, like altering, is one of those things I haven't tried since I moved to Lansing. But when my high-end heels needed some TLC and my Piperlime shopping got out of control I knew I had to find someone - and quickly!! I took three pairs of heels to John's and even though I didn't speak the language of shoe repair, they definitely understood my needs. Cleaned up the heels on a pair of high heels - new tips on the heels (called lifts), cleaned, water-proofed, and managed to fix the scrapes on the heels where I bump them against the wheels of my office chair. But even better? They put new soles on the slick bottoms of the heels. Reel rubber that grip even wet linoleum...which is awesome because I hate it when shoes slide. I've been rotating through all of my shoes and am trying to bring stuff in every month. They are kind, friendly, and tell you the cost up front so you know exactly what you are getting and how much it will cost!! read more

I've been going to John's Shoe Repair for the last few years, after I was tipped off by a friend. It's a very interesting place. When you walk into the small shop, there is always a ton of activity going on. Machines running and people are bustling around. I'm always looking for the elves that are making the shoes. They are always busy, but customers get in and out quickly. They do a great job repairing shoes- such as re- soling (is that a word??), stitching that is falling out, shoe modifications etc. They don't just repair shoes. They do a great job shining shoes, they have even taken a pair of brown shoes and made them black for me. They do all kinds of leather repairs. I took a belt in there once and they punched more holes in it. They sell some shoes in house. Everyone is very friendly and always provides great service. read more

After splurging on some Louboutins pumps and wearing them, the soles and tips had worn pretty bad. They put the new tips on AND a smooth slip resistant rubber to cover the part that had worn! I actually did not realize that shoe repair shops existed outside the context of nineteenth-century literature, but I was tipped off to this place by a friend. It was lovely to drop off a pair of somewhat battered heels with a missing thingamabob (there is no doubt a technical term for it) on one heel and to find them looking brand new a couple of days later. (It was $15 for this pair of shoes, plus an additional $10 for another single shoe that also needed a new thingamabob.) After reading a couple of the other reviews, I was soooo hoping to be waited on by the surly, velvet-hating counter girl. In the past I have had several things done with good results. However the last 2 times have been terrible. I took my son's expensive suede shoes in to get some spots off and they didn't get the spots out and the shoes came back a lot darker . My son was very upset. Yesterday I brought an old leather item in to get a replacement bottom piece for a snap. The counter girl was very friendly but the older blonde women wouldn't even look for a piece that would work and said she'd only replace the male and female parts. All the snaps matches so I wanted to keep things original. I was very disappointed that they wouldn't even try to match up a piece. Even though it wasn't a high profit item , I felt they should have at least tried . Not only have I done a fair amount of business with them but I have sent dozens of people to them over the years. I think of myself as a sneaker head so I am very particular about how I clean my shoes. I usually don't let other people do the cleaning because the shoes could come back any type of way so I was very hesitant about trusting this establishment in the beginning, but I wrecked a pair of shoes after the first time I wore them and needed some outside help to clean them. I looked up a couple shoe repair places in the area and this one came back with that highest reviews so I went. When I walked in I only saw dress shoes and boots so I didn't trust that they knew how to handle sneakers. But, to my surprise they completely restored my shoes and I've been going back to them ever since! I highly recommend them to any sneaker heads out there who need some restorations done! I have to agree with kaye r. that the service/reception one receives at this place is nothing short of bizarre. I took a pair of stiletto shoes to be repaired, the tip of the heel had worn down revealing the nail. The woman gruffly grabbed the shoe and commented that it wasn't very well made. I remarked that, yeah, it was a cheap shoe, but one of my favorite pairs, and that I had only paid $20 for them on sale. She flung the shoe down on the counter and said, "it's going to cost more than that to fix it" and stalked away. Uhhh...but I still want it repaired so I can wear it... She went back to her machine and, I guess, finished something she'd been working on before coming back to give me my receipt stub for the job. So, the moral of the story is that they don't like velvet and they don't like cheap shoes, so don't bring in any cheap velvet shoes or you can forget it... read more

They found the leak and had it repaired the next day, earlier than the estimate. I feel very fortunate that this business is close for when I need it! Oh yeah, the blond lady, seems like she is the only one 'repairing' shoes and every other staff would ask her opinion and she charge whatever she wants. It took me $10 just for stitching the falling sole, and $30 to replace the puller of the zipper of my boots. However they didn't fix it, the zipper teeth still pop out even with the new puller, and they lost my original puller which the cashier girl promised me that they would return to me! SO today the lady said it's gonna be $100 dollars to replace the whole zipper and it would be 4 weeks. But I just did some phone calls with other shoe repairs, the highest price I got was $40 and only take a week at most. Now I feel I paid over price for stitching the soles as well! In general, they seems like having good business going on being the oldest shoe repair in town, but it's overly priced and 'arrogant'. Go to other places if you have the choice, even not in Lansing area. read more

At one point she looked at her co-worker and said, "I am loosing." Losing at what? The ability to treat a customer service with dignity and respect? Then, yes grumpy lady you are losing. Excellent service, excellent price. I feel so lucky to have this place by my house. I had a pair of boots with a broken zipper, brought it in right before they closed and the service man told me exactly what I needed to know right away and was very friendly. I was able to pay right then (there's an option to pay half) and my boot up the day after next. Great work, fast service! I had worn holes through the leather soles of a nice pair of Bostonians, and pretty much obliterated the left heel. Dropped them of Saturday, and picked them up midday the next Tuesday. They look brand new again, even cleaned up the scuff marks. A real honest to God cobbler! And what's better is their prices are some of the best I've seen. I recently brought in a pair of Asolo boots that were a little worse for wear. The leather, which should have been brown, was a light tan; the soles were falling off; and the boots were covered in salt. The workers at John's brought my boots back to life. OK, the staff can be gruff but that's how I was treated growing up so no big deal. If you have something cheap needing repair it's probably not worth it. This is a great place to repair good quality shoes and get them shined. Simple repairs or alterations of leather goods including zippers can me done DIY or by a hobby crafter. Zippers that can't be fixed can be replaced by a tailor. read more

I had no idea what to expect as far as pricing or the amount of time they'd need to do my repairs, so I was delighted when I brought my gear in and they fixed it in under five minutes and charged me practically nothing. So, my first experience here getting a zipper on a bag fixed was great. My second time, the woman at the counter refused to touch my bag because it was made of velvet. I asked if they fixed materials made of velvet and she said yes. It was just that she didn't like the way the fabric felt. She then preceded to be very standoffish when I showed her a leather bag and asked her a few questions. When i came back a week later to pick up my velvet bag, the woman also acted weird around the velvet. I showed up later to ask questions about stains on a shoe and was also treated oddly. Maybe they didn't like the material on that either? Probably won't be going back. read more

I had to pick one star because the option for less than 1 isn't available. About 4 weeks ago, I took my favorite sandals into Johns SHoe Repair of Clppert St in Lansing, Mi to be repaired- new soles/heels. Keep in mind that my family has been going to Johns for 2 generations-- since John owned it. The new-ish owners are horrible rude- particularly the owner's wife. She is loud and nasty- won't listen to customers- Anyway, I got the call to pick them up.....when I showed up I found a pair of sandals that had the bottom inside removed, a cheesy cheap piece of vinyl had been jaggedly cut and haphazardly -semi-glued to the inside of the old heels. Seriously ! my 5 year old could have done better. When I asked about this poor workmanship the man who was working that day- glanced to his side view and shrugged his shoulder -"I don't see a problem" The girl politely asked if I would like them to try to fix it-- I said yes and left-- oh ya-- I also paid in full and in advance, I will NOT do that again-- I will never go to Johns again. 2 weeks later I return .....and am told that I already picked them up and they do not have my shoes. The crazy owner behind the counter told me that she doesn't have my shoes and I picked them up. I showed her my receipt. I tried to explain that the person took them back but she was already raising her voice and acting like a nut ball.. the girl finally found the shoes and the owner told me that this is how they replace the bottoms-- that I only wanted the cushion replaced. Took the money out of the cash register and threw it at me-and stormed to the back of the store-- her husband just stood there staring at her- like she was nuts... 25$... I explained to him "Umm I paid 45$" and showed him the receipt. He handed me the other 20 and apologized. poor workmanship- far less than poor customer service. If I were you I would NEVER go to this place of business-- they are selling out anyway due to lack of business-- hmm maybe it's her lack of manners. read more
