In long Just in case you didn't know there are hundreds of incredibly similar houses subdividing the miles from here to the water's edge, they've built a strip mall here that looks like a dutch colonial house with big gables on the second floor. It actually looks like a bunch of those houses all next to each other, because it's a pretty big strip mall. Inside, while it isn't as big as some supermarkets on the other side of the main freeway, it IS one of the bigger ones over here. Big wine department. Big snack section. Meat and produce sections are kinda average, though, and those sections do matter most, but they're there. I came over yesterday to pick up an online order, and the kid who brought out my stuff was super nice. They didn't have everything I ordered, and she explained why. It all went pretty smoothly overall. I've hit this place quite a few times over the years and have generally gotten what I needed for a decent price...though I'll admit that I often go over the freeway if I need more than the basics.

But we timed a mid-afternoon stop today and found tons of stuff. You know they're always great for snacks at good prices, and some percentage of them might not be total sugar-starch bombs. But we got some bad-for-us stuff as a treat. The frozen food is a hit with my lovely bride, though I avoid that hyper-processed stuff as much as possible. We found good hot sauces and wine at great prices. The checker was totally friendly and one of the floaters helped us a ton with our cart situation (my wife needs to use a scooter these days, hopefully not for much longer). I kinda dread the crowds here but a mid-day visit was super pleasant, and you always find good prices on tasty things at TJ's.

The holiday shopping vibes were clearly present in the store, as I saw people grabbing multiples of the same items to stock up. As usual, the employees were friendly and efficient. Even though the store was crowded, they were able to move the lines very quickly. Overall, I'm still very happy that Trader Joe's is able to keep its prices down in this economy. Parking near Trader Joe's may be difficult, but the mall parking lot is huge, so you can always park a bit farther away and walk.

I am an odd duck who will go to a Winco if I happen to be in the area. None are near home; so if I…read morehappen to be near one, I make sure I go! Their stores are all warehouse style without personality; I am perfectly good with that. I don't expect service, not even a smile. I don't expect to find staff to help with anything. For me, their two most enticing departments remain to be their produce area and bulk foods. We can spend an hour just in these two departments. For produce, we load up on salad items and fruits. The veggies including broccoli tend to be meh; the reason is that everything is straight from the carton without trimming. No hate, just the facts. That is how they keep the cost low. I go elsewhere for veggie greens (except salad lettuce). As for bulk foods, this area is a treasure trove - great selection, good prices, and tends to have good turnaround so the products are fresh. For this most recent first visit to the Everett location, I finally noticed how they label their 'sale' items. Look for green 'Extra Savings' signs. They don't stand out and are not visually eye-catching. Things are simply there in seemingly extra volume. I scored a liter size bottle of Valentina hot sauce for only $2.68. Starkist tuna cans were on sale for $0.88, lower than the typical grocery store sale of $0.99, plus they had the low sodium version in stock. We bought a case of 24. Anyway, go for the prices; don't expect service or ambiance. Winco can be the best. Oh, and they open 24 hours! BUT, no credit cards. Debit, EBT, or cash only.

Walking in, the ambiance is essentially "Costco: Industrial Edition." It's a massive warehouse of pure, unadulterated grocery chaos. While I wasn't exactly blown away by the prices on the name-brand items, the WinCo house brand is practically a steal--often half the cost! The real showstopper, however, is the bulk bin section. It takes up at least a quarter of the entire store. You could legitimately get lost in there and start a new life among the quinoa and gummy bears. A word to the wise: WinCo is strictly "Cash or Debit only." I was blissfully unaware of this little quirk until I reached the register, and I narrowly escaped a walk of shame only because I happened to have some cash on me. Consider yourself warned!

The produce section continues to rock, as do the superb meat and seafood sections. The former asian section is mostly mixed in now, and that is fine. It still has a huge variety of top-quality items. Cheese has shrunk a bit since the new restaurant opened, but it's still good. Deli meats are a little less appealing, but still good. This is a wonderful grocer, neck-and-neck with the other local/regional high-end grocer, Metropolitan Market. Of the two, I prefer T&C. Both are great.

We stayed out of the middle aisles, shopping on the edges. The last time we were in, the original sushi people were gone, replaced by some run of the mill contractor with fishy tasting garbage. This time, prices were unbelievable. We all know that Covid affected the supply chain and things got expensive. The supply chain has been fine for awhile, yet everything is ridiculously expensive. I am not poor. I think I have a relatively decent income. When I mentioned that I was likely to stop including this store as a regular option, I was met with death stares. Seriously? We were followed to our car and asked to not come back. Seriously? I actually went back inside and took photos of the staff running away from me. We weren't violent. We didn't cuss. We weren't loud. We just called you out for being a money-hungry conglomerate charging as much as the richest customer will pay. You should be ashamed at how exclusionary your store really is. And obviously your staff isn't trained on anything remotely close to empathy. If they were, there attitude would have been much better. Effen Mill Creek snobs.

In long Maybe it's just me, but it seems like they used to stock a much wider variety of specialty produce (among other things) here. The shelves and cases are all still full, and the quality is good. But you used to walk through here and see at least half a dozen things that practically no other stores had on hand. They still have good stuff, though--no doubt. The bakery section was super tempting, and there were dozens of choices among meat, fish, and poultry. The produce section is really big for this size of store--imagine if Trader Joe's focused on fruit and veg instead of snacks and frozen stuff, and you have a general picture of the ratio. Prices are a bit higher here than TJ, but not unreasonable. Quality is very good (esp. on produce). There are long aisles of shelf-stable condiments, packaged stuff, tons of spices. They definitely aim first at the home cooks who think of themselves as home cooks, and secondly at the folks who just know they need good groceries. Beer and wine are just a few basics, maybe half a small aisle. They had a few solid manager's specials going today, and the staff were all very nice (if not very bubbly). I'd happily shop here if I didn't have to drive past half a dozen other supermarkets that are all good options. So, I'd shop here if I lived in Mill Creek, essentially.

Every time I visit, I pick up a fruit or vegetable that I haven't tried before. Today it was a small Korean melon with bright yellow skin. The guys who work the fish counter are personable and knowledgeable. The man who helped us made a good suggestion for the type of fish to use in a soup, and didn't grumble when, near closing, he had to start up the equipment to cut it for us. The parking lot can be busy but I just choose to park farther away from the door. Also, try to go during an off hour--the veggie section (and the store in general) can get crowded. I suggest stopping by the deli section at the front of the store to see what treats are available. Last time I tried a tasty steamed cake wrapped in banana leaf. Another tip is to jump on specials as soon as you see them. I'm still kicking myself for not picking up an entire pack of oxtails for 1.99 a pound. I went back a few days later and they were gone. I still bought oxtails, for up to $2.00 less a pound than other stores. Lastly, double check the expiration dates on prepackaged foods. Every once and a while you'll find one that is past it's prime.
