What a funky little (actually big) gas station market! In fact, I would easily add this to an "off the beaten path" attractions list for the Greater Seattle area. They have a million different types of beers and other drinks and cool decor. And, well, gas. Bottom line: Check it out! Especially if you want to put together your own funky six-pack or just feel a place that is everything other than mainstream and big box.

Father's Day gift ideas. Cool packaging.

Wow, quite a startling beer mecca for being so seemingly far away from everything. You wouldn't necessarily think that such a woodsy, house-focused neighborhood would have the population to support a bottle shop--you expect to find these in more densely packed areas in town. But it's the real deal, with at least a dozen coolers full of craft beer. You wouldn't think it's the real deal, though, because it looks like a gas station--must be the gas pumps, and everything else about it that is, in fact, a gas station. When you first walk in, you still think it's just an ordinary mini-mart. But then you walk the coolers and you see dozens of Belgians and hundreds of American beers. Not quite the same level of emphasis on German, UK, or Scandinavian stuff (to say nothing of all the countries that send one or two lagers to the U.S.), but Belgians and Americans offer quite a devastating lineup by themselves. They have a couple dozen empty six pack holders sitting out, clearly inviting you to mix up and go. One whole side wall is craft beer; the back wall is macro-industrial lagers and then the third wall is gatorade and pop and stuff. It's right off Highway 9, so not too awfully hard to get to. I don't happen to pass through here that often, but this is now a guaranteed stop if I am in the vicinity. They even had a ton of cool vintage looking single-wide milk crates with bottles of fancy beer wired into place--these were Father's Day gift ideas today. Pretty cool. Startlingly interesting little find in an unexpected spot.

Some cool stuff to look at when you shop at Norm's

So, everybody talks about the beer, and there are plenty of spirits to satisfy alcohol lovers the world over. The reason for my five stars is two fold -- the amazing soda selection and the wonderful people who work there. Norm's has this absolutely AMAZING selection of artisan and classic sodas in glass bottles. Fentimans Botanically Brewed Sodas, Cock and Bull are just two of the many unique libations you will find in their coolers of magic. New York Seltzer and Green River are two more. This is in addition to the standard Coke and Pepsi products you'll find in any store. Of course, no convenience store (and Norm's is convenience store on steroids) is complete without munchies. They have a wide assortment of snacks, cookies and ice cream as well as hot foods. There is also a whole feast for the eyes that is the store's decor. Lit trees, a mannequin standing at a urinal (check it out, he's in the back of the store wearing a Seahawks jersey and red sweats) and perhaps my favorite, the ski lift chair right outside as you walk up to the door. All these things make this not just a wonderful gas station and convenience store, but the people who work here are super friendly and welcoming. Stu is one of the friendliest people I've had the pleasure to encounter at a business. All of these factors make Norm's a great place to get gas, beer and soda! Make your way to Lake Stevens for an experience that just might brighten your whole day!

This is one of those places where you walk through the doors, your arms raise, you look to the sky, and the heavenly choir bolts out sounds of glory. I'm not sure about anything else in this store, but it is the beer lover's heaven. I've been to many a convenience store, liquor store, and alcohol drive thru, but none hold a candle to Norm's Market. Great fortune brought us here as my brother in law and I were driving through Lake Stevens on a beer run, when I missed a turn into a Chevron and we ended up pulling into an unassuming convenience store. Little did we know what we were getting into. There was an unmatched selection of beer bottled and on tap. Many beers I have never seen or heard of before. You don't want to buy a six? Grab any individual, mix and match, and build your own six. You have a growler you need filled? Pick one of the many tapped beers and they'll fill it. The employees were completely helpful informing us about the beer and showing us a bar code we could scan that links you to their beer list that is updated frequently. We even got to sample a beer or two. It literally took me 15 minutes to decide on my beers for the night. I went with three double deuces with a couple standbys (Young's Double Chocolate Stout and Boulder Beer Shake Chocolate Porter) and a new one (Iron Horse Mocha Death). Prices were completely fair and we are not going to go anywhere else for beer when we're in town.

My plans to resupply at the…read moreEverett Chef's store has now been twice thwarted: last night and now today around 12:00 noon. Undaunted, I decided to pay a visit to the Lake Stevens Tom Thumb on the way back after escaping the pending mind numbing experience of gridlock. A few weeks ago I read a glib mention of good Chinese food being offered there for lunch. A good time to check it out. (Really? "Good" Chinese food? At TT ?) Frankly, I wasn't too eager to check it out. But the short mention I had read had the ring of a true believer. Someone who approached food with some reverence. Best not to ignore fate. Saturday noon time at the Thumb wasn't busy. I chalked that up to the flooding or just plain luck. The hot food section had a few odds and ends but nothing Asian. I asked about the Chinese food to a female customer nearby. In a hushed voice laced with fanaticism she handed me a menu pamphlet and said the bacon fried rice was her favorite. Then gave me a knowing look as if to say I was in the good hands of Providence. The manager was quick to show up. He greeted me warmly, made sure I had a menu, took my order, and offered me a place to sit and wait. A quick scan showed all the usual favorites of beef/shrimp, Chow Mein/Rice, chicken, appetizers, and vegetarian dishes. Dishes were easily recognizable by name. One or two rice dishes that I've never seen before. And several lunch special dishes. Three sauces are explained to aid in your decision making. I chose a dinner portion of sesame chicken. My experience with this dish in many places is the same: pre frozen breast meat that's been dipped in a batter. Then flash frozen and packaged. Or it is dredged in flour or dipped in a batter, then fried to a semi hard tensile strength in dark clumps. The line cook fries a portion in hot oil, then it is drained and sauced with honey or maybe maple syrup and soy sauce and brown sugar. Sometimes it's darker in color due to overcooking in oil or adding too much soy sauce. Since it is a chicken dish, it requires one to wade through a fried dough experience first, with the sauce adding to the experience. The sauce is typically overly sweet. Too much honey, sugar, or syrup. After the third bite it's just too sweet. One could compare it to a chicken filled super glazed donut. So it was either the sesame chicken or the other dish I frequently find disappointing: Orange chicken. I chose the sesame. Let's see what these folks can do. In less than ten minutes it was ready. I was thanked for coming by and was on my way home. I could tell from the weight I had about two pounds of sesame chicken. I was right: 1.92 pounds when I weighed it at home. The portion was huge. And some skill in presentation was added. Just enough to frame the dish: broccoli florets. That little addition did not go unnoticed. It made the dish pop when I opened the container. The chicken was obviously fresh. Not frozen. It had been coated with flour and corn starch. Fried but not to the point of it being crusty. Chewy. Not dry or tough. Moist. Chewy. Not doughy. The sauce was not overly sweet. The chef exercised restraint and allowed the sweetness to come through, but not dominate. I could taste sesame. After appreciating the dish, I tried adding some of the soy sauce from a packet they supplied. A slightly different complex of flavors but the chicken and sesame dominated. It provided a balanced harmony. Not better. Slightly different. So for $17.45 (including tax), a very well executed sesame chicken with the portion easily feeding two adults. Take out only. Fast and friendly service until 9 PM. My thanks to anyone who posts even a snippet of something about a place to give us a heads up. Had I not read that short comment about this place, I would have missed out. To that perThank you!

So, I stopped in at Fred Meyers in Snohomish yesterday. Here's my review…read more.. I was INUNDATED with...wait for it...nice and helpful employees. Yep. Okay, I admit, this is not exactly breaking news for those of us who shop here on a regular basis but that doesn't mean it doesn't need to be noticed. For example, let's talk about Kathy at the seafood and meat counter. There was this lovely customer in one of the little motorized shopping carts who needed assistance and Kathy was incredibly kind and helpful. I know, I know, that's her job, but she did it with a smile and a lot of patience. How cool is that? She also made sure to acknowledge me, and other customers as they approached, to make sure we knew she saw us. Like they say, it is the littlest things that are so appreciated. My checker, May, was a sweetheart; helpful, friendly and super-efficient. We got through almost the entire order, and I realized I had forgotten my ID in my truck (apparently 60-ish is the new 21 Hahahaha but having owned a C-Store I have no problem with following a protocol that can be quite expensive if not followed). She could not have been more understanding, pausing my order as I dashed outside to fetch it. No rolling of eyes, no judgement, just a "customer-first/no problem" attitude. And, as I was heading out with my wildly full cart, I couldn't help but notice this gal (I found out her name was "Bella" from Elly, another delightful employee at customer service) who was happily dashing between checkout stands helping bag groceries wherever she was needed. It goes without saying (but it shouldn't) that their produce is fantastic. Their fresh flowers are gorgeous. The Copper River salmon I bought from Kathy was incredible...I could go on and on. Oh, and the lavender plants they had out front for $8.99 a piece? WOW! YAY! I know I can forget how much work it takes to make a big store like Fred Meyers run well. I also believe it is proof positive of great management within that store when it does. Employees who trust in their bosses work harder. It's just human nature. We are blessed to have this particular store in our town. Go there, you will agree.

The building seems to be new and clean. Shelves are stocked for the most part. I usually find what I need when I go grocery shopping here. The store is well organized and seems to have gone through a slight remodel in the last year with new displays and signs. They also expanded their check out lines and have 5 self service check outs. These seem to go quickly. They other lines seem to take forever though so I always do self check out. The customer service needs improvement though. I've tried telling the checker the app has a lower price and show her my phone. Especially because there are NO PRICE CHECK MACHINES. She said they don't price match. And that was over 8 months ago. I've never had that issue before. Seemed a little lazy to me because she didn't want to price match. She told me I could purchase it online and come back to the store to pick it up. She didn't offer the customer service counter or ask a manager. I've had other checkers fixed it with no issue. So I avoided her lines when I come into the store because she's not very friendly and slow at check out. I've asked other employees about a price checker machine like Target has and they say to use the app. How can I use the app if they WONT PRICE MATCH?? It's so frustrating. I try to avoid doing a store pick up. Every single time I've ordered it's been an hour or more past the pick up window. I think 3 hours so fill an order is crazy. Especially when I have kids and naptime I need to plan a round. So when I have a set time it should be in that pick up window. Especially since same day pick up is like unheard of at this location. It's usually next day pick up available. That's why I usually shop at Target for same-day. It's so unreliable.

Only one female employee was there. My friend finished his purchase of sunglasses and a few other items and was told by our checker that the customer service clerk might have scissors to cut off the tag. She took the glasses, snipped off the tag, then paused before handling them back, and asked, 'Do you have a receipt?'. You can't make this up. Just more harassment and ignorance on the part of nearly non-English speaking store employee. Ridiculous that this store cannot provide decent service. On top of that, my friend was so insulted that he completely forgot to pick up the 2 bags of ice he bought. We have the receipt. We were vowing to never return but we might tomorrow to pick up the ice. We live 14 miles away, not a quick jaunt back to the store. Furthermore, the store security followed us around the entire store. From garden to sunglasses, to beer to coffee. Actually, all the way to the register. It would be laughable if not so ludicrous. Serves us right for going to a damn Walmart
