Food was just okay. Service was meh. Went for breakfast. Coffee is served in the glass pedestal mugs so doesn't hold much and without server attention your lucky to get a refill plus it was either from the night before, cheap and poor quality coffee or the machine needs cleaned. Welcomed and server was very personable and attentive. Got a Reuben with fries and a PBR. I didn't use the bathrooms. The fries were cut fresh and there were HOT!!!! Thank you First off--not pure rye bread but that sounds class of swirled stuff. I'm not a fan. The Reuben was hot with I think home dressed cabbage and some thousand island. It was ok a little dry and I honestly couldn't tell if there was cheese. The meat was thin, not juicy, and didn't seem especially fresh. I guess for the price I shouldn't expect more meat. I'll go out on a limb and say the cook is not aroused by a good Reuben. I will go back, just try something different. read more

Landed in Salem a few weeks ago and was looking for a bar that had great service, food, parking AND pool. I wasn't really expecting much when I walked in the door at Johnny's. I struck out in my visits to other bars in the neighborhood, but this bar was different. Not only did Mara and McKenzie go above and beyond welcoming this newbie, the food was fantastic! I had the flat iron steak the first night - flavorful and perfectly medium rare and have retuned a few times for the fettuccine alfredo (pictured here). SO good! Although there aren't many pool players, the tables are decent (though need a thorough cleaning, leveling and more chalk), I hope to see more challengers in the future. We ordered a veggie plate as an appetizer and all the veggies were super fresh and crisp. We were happy there was a healthy option for an appetizer. We ordered a BBQ chicken wrap to share for dinner and it was really tasty! The veggies in it were as fresh as the veggie plate and the chicken and bacon were really tasty. So I went here for the first time a few weeks back and I'm pretty sure I got food poisoning from this place..we came in just before 10 pm and were informed they don't serve food after 10 but since it technically wasn't 10 pm yet that we could out in an order.. waitress was awkward and weird about it. The food looked okay and I had a couple of drinks that were strong but whatever happened with me afyer I left the establishment an hour later was out of this world. I experienced all symptoms of food poisoning..i have never experienced anything more disgusting and memorable after eating out. I had the Mac and cheese and my friend had a burger, and was fine. Not sure what happened regarding me but it wasn't a lucky night and makes me never want to come back to drink or do anything let alone eat. We ordered the 10 Oz steak meal. This is by far the best steaks we have had in Salem. Each of our steaks were cooked exactly the way we ordered. The grilled veggies were amazing. A nice little neighborhood bar with tasty food. Atmosphere was good: blue-collar and ages all over the map. We'll definitely go back soon. The joint is non-smoking and 21-and-over only. There are a few unobtrusive video poker machines, two pool tables, HD TVs a-plenty, free WiFi, and a patio (smoking allowed there). The booths were comfy. The service was good. The food was tasty. I had fish and chips. The fish was cod and was fresh and tasty. The fries were good and lightly salted. The coleslaw was a bit bland, as was the tartar sauce, but that was the only downside to my dinner. Kim had a reuben. It was quite tasty, although not a traditional reuben (served on a hoagie roll, along with a few other deviations). She also had sweet potato fries, which were excellent. Kim had a gin and tonic before dinner and she gave it high marks. I had a Fat Tire, which was well poured and cold. Their beer list is a bit short: Coors, Bud, and PBR, along with Mirror Pond IPA, Black Butte Porter, Hefeweisen, and Fat Tire. The menu was surprisingly varied, from appetizers to salads to steaks to pasta to seafood. On weekends they serve a tasty-sounding breakfast menu, too. read more

The food is great, the atmosphere is laid back and the staff are very friendly and remembered our drinks; even when we haven't been in for a couple weeks....impressive! Came in tonight and it was PACKED! There were only two bartenders working and man were they working. They are so busy. I've never seen a better representation of team work. These two ladies were amazing! I sat at the bar so I got to see them communicate about orders, drinks needed at tables, helping customers at the bar, helping people coming into the bar, it was nuts. I went here for brunch the morning after Halloween. I arrived at 11. It appeared to be a seat yourself sort of place, though there was no sign. The staff totally ignored me while I tried to decide if I should find a table or wait for more of my party to arrive. As a few more showed up we decided to wait for a table out on the patio. All larger tables were full and we knew we'd have a party of at least 8. We let the serving staff know and headed out back with coffees in hand. While we were waiting for a large enough table to open (the staff had agreed to let us know when it was available) no one checked on us outside. At some point while we were waiting, a different party came in and seated themselves at the table we were supposed to get. When we realized this, we went back in and settled for dividing into two groups. The waitress took forever to come get our orders, even longer to bring coffee refills, and never even brought water until after our food arrived. She also acted as if us needing to order was in same way an inconvenience to her. We finally made our food orders around noon. While waiting for our food we had very infrequent check ins and coffee refills. Our food arrived around 12:35 or 12:40 (an hour and a half since we arrived! ) and while my Amazon scramble was decent, two of our party had ordered eggs Benedict. It was sad and soggy. The 'hollandaise' sauce was transparent. Neither of them could really eat it. They also made errors splitting our bill when it finally arrived. This place may be an ok spot to get a beer and watch a game, but don't waste your time on breakfast. read more

The veggies were fresh and the bun was of high quality. It's served on an colorful, almost square plate, which helps make room for the two burger halves that you assemble and the accompanying side dish... regular french fries in my case. The service was swift and pleasant. The interior space of Johnny's is very clean and nicely decorated. The bathrooms are nice and clean as well. I was disappointed by this place. The service was absolutely terrible. There were very few people in the place and it still took forever to get service. And every time the waitress left to do something (bring drinks, get menus, get food, etc) it took her -forever- to make her way back. We got burgers. (bacon cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburger with roasted garlic, blue cheese burger with roasted garlic). They were...meh. Not terrible but nothing at all to get excited about. The patties were fairly thin and overcooked/dry. There wasn't much of any garlic added. The blue cheese was fairly bland and low quality. There was a good amount of fixings on it, which was nice, but none of them were of outstanding quality. The sweet potato fries were pretty good and well cooked but fairly bland. We had to season them ourselves. The fries were....fries. Again, not great but not terrible. The best part about it was the bun. The buns were delicious. But not enough to pull the burger out of the "mediocre" realm. For the price, this was not a place I would bother going to again. read more

Johnny's has a great patio area, the perfect place to sit in the sun in the summer and end the day with a burger and a cold beverage. They have 2 pool tables (rare in Salem) which is nice.They have an average alcohol selection, with an above-average bartender so he can make it work. and the food is good. The burgers are especially tasty, as are the fried pickles. The kitchen staff leaves early though, and it's nothing but fried appys from 10p til close. And the service is way better during the week than the busy weekends. Patrick is the best bartender, he's always courteous and attentive. It get's busier on the weekends though and sometimes service can take a while and you have to ask for simple things like silverware, condiments and napkins, the girls aren't always on top of it. I have had to wait for seating many times, it gets pretty packed in there. And sadly, it's a bar that seems to attract a few obnoxious adults, local white collar 40-somethings that need to get messy and wasted and talk REALLY LOUD. Recurring theme, not sure how that happened but definitely not the fault of the bar itself. Just beware if you're looking for a quiet night. read more

Very low key atmosphere. Comfortable environment. I like that kids can play pool while their parents eat and make it a fun thing for the whole group. I ordered a BLT, my normal for most restaurants,and it was perfect! Exactly what I asked for. Usually even the best of places will mess up my simple sandwich but not this time! Food was decent, but not something that would draw me back in. If your there after nine, someone will come out and take your umbrella away without asking if they may interrupt your meal.
