Side Hustle Bar seems like a great spot for a younger crowd. We went to watch the fight, have a few beers, and grab some food. The wings and empanadas were both tasty, and we enjoyed our first round of drinks. The atmosphere was lively, but I do wish the music had been turned down a bit during the fight. It was difficult to hear what was happening, which was the main reason we were there. The bar has some nice extras, including an upstairs area with pool tables and a back room with slot machines, giving people plenty to do. Service was decent when it wasn't busy, but once the crowd picked up, it took quite a while to get drinks and eventually close out our tab. There was also some confusion with our bill. My husband had already paid for our food and first round of beers on a separate tab, but our server wasn't aware of it and initially tried to charge me for items that had already been paid for. We were able to get it sorted out, but it was a little frustrating. Overall, it was a good experience, and I can see why people enjoy it. It's just not really my scene, so I probably won't be back. 2 Horrible experiences with the same staff on two different weekends! My boyfriend ordered a coors banquet on draft..The shorter bartender with short brownish black hair came back super cheerful to let us know that the keg spat out in the middle of her pouring the banquet so she "just topped it off with coors LIGHT"... then she handed my boyfriend the drink and walked away laughing... since when did that become appropriate bartending service? A couple weeks prior to that incident she did something equally dumbfounding..My best friend and I ordered two ciders and when we went back to our table to take a sip we shocked because what we just drank was clearly not a cider but what seemed like AN IPA? So we went back up the bar thinking she made an honest mistake..NOPE! She said "yeah the one you wanted ran out so I just gave you those"... WHAT???! Whyyyyy would two girls who ordered a low percent fruity cider want an 11% dry imperial IPA??!?? WHYYY again would you not give us a choice, and just serve us whatever? You don't know peoples allergies/tolerances (I mean seriously 6 vs. 11 percent is crazy). So over it.. telling all my friends to not come here anymore. Ps. Staff were professional and friendly. Music was PHENOMENAL, and very receptive to its audience. People were happy, relaxed, and just having a great time. No drama. Crowd is made up mostly of awesome younger wonderful individuals. You can basically dance everywhere! Felt safe and comfortable. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. 7-8 months ago, this place was fire - food was tasty, hot, and service was enjoyable. But there's been a ski jump of a decline - not sure if it's management or staffing, but within the last 6 months, the visits have been abysmal. During my last mid day visit, there was one bartender on duty and the staff does not excel at food service. I ordered a soda, chips & salsa, and 3 asada queso tacos. Refills are scarce, their syrup or carbonation levels are off every time, and unless food is delivered or you walk up to the bar, you're paying for one very expensive soda. I inhale these things, so it's embarrassing walking up to the bar 5 or 6 times to do their job. Their handmade chips used to be *chefs kiss*, but it took 30 minutes for the chips to arrive, and when they did, they were tepid, some were chewy, and a few were wet with grease. Possibly good ol'double-frying or sitting on the line too long. At this point, I'm hangry and particularly unpleasant especially after tipping 20% up front, like an idiot. Finally, after 40 minutes spent in contemplation, my 3 asada queso tacos arrived. Yet my joy instantly died because, apparently, mediocrity is a hill we die on. The tacos were meh-warm, the cheese was cold and coagulated, and the tortillas were tough and chewy - and you guessed it - probably sitting on the line too long. Four score and 7 years ago, the food was delivered hot and fresh, complete with napkins, salsa, condiments, refills, and enjoyable staff who actually knew you by name. Today, you're army crawling in no man's land to get a measly looking bottle of unappetizing salsa, stuck to the sides of the glass, that's 3/4's empty, and the wrong kind. Painfully, they're also pushing silicon valley prices. With tip, it cost close to $35 and these kind people charged a whopping $8 for wet greasy chips & salsa, oddly, the same price for chips & guac. Lastly, before I depart this side quest, upon entering the bar there's a noticeable unpleasant odor - not referring to the weed from adjacent businesses, but specifically within the bar itself. The only sad thing for me is that I am from out of town so this is my one shot, as I leave tomorrow. But their Mexican food is LEGIT (coming from a Texas girl). This place has the absolute worst service I have ever experienced in Salem. Unfortunately the food is killer so I have given it several chances hoping I'd have a good experience. I have been there 4 times and each time I experienced a different server/bartender. Each time they are rude and not friendly at all. Went in yesterday with a friend (11-10-2024) and the woman behind the bar was completely rude, the drinks were absolutely horrible and she got upset when asked to wipe the counter down from the previous patron. I've been to Side Hustle twice now. The food and the drinks have been good. However, the service has been awful. The first time the bartender was so rude we closed our tab after one beer and went somewhere else to eat. The 2nd time the same bartender was rude to the women in our group but nice to the men. I asked for a second drink (re-fill on what I was currently drinking), she brought me the wrong one. When I told her nicely, I think this is the wrong margarita, she told me no it's the same thing you just drank. It was clearly a different color and had different garnishes. She asked if I wanted it remade, I said yes. The bartender grabbed a new glass, put the garnishes on and then poured the same incorrect drink in the new glass. I get taco's here every week and the food is great. The bar gets their meat daily from a butcher, so when they run out -- they are out for the day. Meaning they don't sacrifice quality for quantity of product that will potentially be left over the next day. I like the selection of beer they have and every glass I have been given has been clean cold glass -- Without finger smudges. This is tasteful. A lot of bars in the area sometimes give me my drink in a hot glass (fresh out of the dish washer) or a glass that has condensation on the inside.. or worse -- a glass with smudges from a bar tenders dirty hands. This of course is a super picky quark of mine I know, but it's nice that side hustle ensures high quality delivery of the drink of my choice. In terms of atmosphere, the bar really stands out from the rest of Salem. There is artwork, ambient lighting, a jukebox, high and low seating and comfy chairs and a pool table upstairs. The pool table also has nice felt and the balls and pool sticks are in very good condition. Don't put your drinks on the pool table please. As for the personality, candor and professionalism of the staff, I can confidently say that Kurt is one of the most passionate, friendly bar managers I have ever met. He cares about his customers and wants the wellbeing and point of views of his patrons to be the center of his customer service. I feel very welcome when I enter the bar and more often then not, I stay a little past my anticipated recess because I love the staff. As for professionalism, I have never had a problem getting the food I ordered, or special requests for allergies etc. taken care of. No one employed by Side Hustle has ever been rude to me or not smiled while taking my order. Additionally, the staff is well groomed (no long finger nails, bad breath, dirty uniform or unkept hair). The food takes 10 minutes max to get to you and the drinks are exceptionally quick unless the bar is slammed. If the bar is slammed just give Kurt a holler. He has really good hearing and recently when I ordered an extra Modelo from across the bar, he said "I'm right on it". Overall, I would consider Side Hustle to be the rising star of Salem eatery and dining/ bar experience. I wanted to love this place and had high hopes. Unfortunately they have been dashed. I think they hold cleanliness as something low on the totem poll. Sticky floors and filthy counters as well as bartenders that seem more interested in taking care of their friends then seeing if a customer needs things. They also don't seem to know if they want to be a nightclub or sports bar. I really like the food, but the cleanliness of the place makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like.
