I really wanted to like this place but the food doesn't do anything for me. I've given this place three chances so far and tried all the most popular dishes and I always leave with a weird taste in my mouth. I don't know what's going on with the stuffed avocados but there's something in it that just tastes strange to me. Perhaps it's the ginger and lime sauce? After awhile I just ate the avocado by itself. The Johnny's bowl looked and sounded really good but ended up being a total disappointment. Womp womp womp. Great place to have a lunch outside since there is a very pleasant courtyard, but the interior looked very nice too in a dark wood cozy sort of way. The servers were attentive and assisted my companion in making a curry selection. I knew right away that I was going for the rice stuffed grilled avocado. I picked right, the rice was super flavorful and had the same sort of char you would expect from a paella. Definitely worth a visit if you have not been. What a surprise! With a name like Johnny Oceans, I expected to find a classic car hanging overhead with surfer music blasting from the corners. Who would have guessed we would find a gem of a restaurant in a mall? After a usual debate of trying something new vs. going with what we know, our family decided to try this little Caribbean style diner at the Oakway Mall in Eugene. The fun décor kept the mood light and we waited only minutes before they sat our party of 5 under a thatched covered table. The menu provided something for the diverse palate in my family: from the list of burgers to the vegetarian options. The service was exceptionally friendly and prompt. The amazing desserts in the case were only passed up because the dinner portions were bountiful. I am happy to add Johnny Oceans to our "know" list for the next family dinner out. read more

I wasn't expecting a lot, but I was pleasantly surprised by this place! It's hidden in the back of Oakway so I had never really thought about it before. It's a small restaurant in "island" decor- not really an intimate setting for a date night, but great service (the owner was around the whole time which I always appreciate) and good food! We had the grilled avocado, the Johnny bowl, and the coconut shrimp skewers. Our group had a variety of other dishes and everyone was pleased. Let me tell you that this place is officially my favorite restaurant. I don't think I will go to this place and order something that will dissatisfy me. For one person, you can indulge and maybe 3 things, excluding a drink for about 30$. But usually, when you're going here with buddies, you're sharing appetizers and then with maybe 3 or 5 friends, the price is usually 60 - 80$. Admittedly, food is pricey. By that, I mean that dishes may range from 7$ - 18$. But considering that these foods never miss and are always tasty for me, I don't mind. This place is... truly fantastic. Now, just with this description, you can kind of trust that this place is amazing... But I wanna go more in depth with how well prepared everything I've tried there has been. Let's start with the appetizers. In my history of being here, I have ordered mozzarella sticks, and plantain chips. Let me tell you that the plantain chips were so tasty! They had this cilantro-like salsa that was very complimentary with the chips and goes well with just about everything I tried it with. I haven't seen that dip anywhere else. It's fresh, unique, and very well made. I'm positive that they choose only the freshest plantains. The mozzarella sticks were very satisfying! As I saw other reviewers put it: The breading was very crispy, crunchy, and high quality. The mozzarella was undoubtedly fresh, hot and melty. The marinara/tomato sauce was zesty, and delicious. Now, with the main course in mind. In the past, I have ordered Fish & Chips two times. They have both been equally satisfying and yummy. Fresh, juicy, and thick cuts of not only cod, but crispy halibut as well. A consistent, delicious meal. To note, the tartar sauce was very well made and had all the important parts of a good tartar. Never has the breading on any of these dishes been not crispy enough, or too thick. They have this down to a T. And the serving size is plentiful. Both times I have been here, I have taken home leftovers. Probably because I've gotten full off of appetizers. My friends have ordered salads and curry and while I can't speak on their behalf in DETAIL, I can assure you that you won't feel like you made a mistake if you pick it. They are both delightful. For the drinks, I have tried a peach smoothie, peach lemonade, piña colada smoothie, and strawberry lemonade. These are all super fruity and juicy. They are all fresh and I'm pretty sure they use some coconut milk for the smoothies. I've never been dissatisfied with these drinks. Assuredly, these are made with real and fresh fruit. I recall ordering some delicious chocolate cake for dessert. I only got one bite because my friend wouldn't share, but that's credit to how addicting and delicious it probably was. LOL Overall? This place is maybe the best place I've been to in a WHILE. Seriously amazing. Service was kind, swift, and I was never hesitant to give my kind regards to the chef. I feel so bad writing a negative review for a restaurant but the lunch I just had really made a bad impression on me as a first timer here. I ordered Caribbean saute for lunch and it was a noodle dish soaked in diluted teriyaki sauce wt crushed red pepper (? It was spicy). The noodles were not properly prepared--actually I don't think it was fully cooked (took me quite some time to chew and digest) and the veggies inside taste nothing but sweet teriyaki flavor. With the price of $13.5, I was expecting something more delicate, or at least something more original instead of items from cans or prepackaged sauce bottles--that was my honest feeling after 1st bite. It a cool place. It really is. But I am REALLY BIG ON SERVICE and this place just doesnt have any. The girls working there (given I've only been 3 or 4 times and will never go back) have all been SUPER snobby and stuck up. Last time I went I stood at the register waiting for the pretty but dumb girl to get off her cell phone with her boyfriend and than she short changed me. Sorry Johnny. I'm snot going to come back after our last (and first) experience. My wife and I had a had a rare chance to snag lunch together a few weeks ago. We dont do this too much, however the stars and moons aligned just right, and we were snot going to let this opportunity pass us by. I'm snot going to say that this place is horrible. I really dont feel I had the full meal visit/experience that the owner would like his customers to have. As we were sat, we opened the menu's and started to check and see what they had for lunch. We were snot blown away by the selection, but there were a few items that grabbed my attention. The Steak Sandwich sounded just right. This is where things start to go awry. Our waitress was on our way to take our order. When she stopped at the table, she stood there, smiling, asking how our day was going. I couldn't help but notice that she had a cold. Or allergies. Or something amongst those lines that was causing her nose to run. And when I say, run.....I'm not joking....this girl had a large glob of SNOT (yes...all the "snot" referrances earlier were intentional), running from her nose. She sucked, inhaled and did everything short or using the back of her hand to wipe it away from her face. Poor girl. I do feel bad for her. But on the other hand, if this was happening....I would think she would try and deal with this in another way, like staying home for instance. After she left, she did make it back to the kitchen to wipe her nose. This was noticed as she brought our drinks back to the table. Thank god she did snot let it sit there a moment longer on her face. When the food was delivered, the mucus made its way back onto the upper lip of our server. *Vomit* I wasn't able to eat due to the concern and loss of appetite. I paid right around $15 for my lunch which went right into the garbage. Ordered pulled pork tacos and I bit into a piece of plastic, they were so-so, before finding plastic in them and the beans and rice were hard. The halibut sandwich is not a filet, but more like ground halibut pressed and breaded like frozen patties and disgusting. The only thing that tasted good was the diet Pepsi.Was upset that they wouldn't offer to help me out with the tacos that had plastic in them, but owner Shawn refused to talk to me. $22 for the worst meal I have ever had. I've been to the Caribbean.... this place does a mediocre job at best to capture the flavors of it. For my first time going there, I expected a little more service, but it seemed the regulars get the attention/good service... which is OK, but why would I want to come back if I felt I was being ignored? My girlfriend asked to have her salad without croutons, and her dinner without the bread, due to her allergy. Needless to say, the waitress could not have cared less, and brought it out with bread anyways, which, the bread tasted like burnt oil. When she noticed me picking it off, said "oooooh, you have a wheat allergy" and we said "yeaah, that's why we told you at the beginning." So I've eaten their food once but everything was delicious! I work at Café Yumm! and I always smell the food and notice the super friendly staff when I walk through the courtyard. Yesterday I walked by and saw this dish with shrimp and pico de gallo sitting atop a fried-something and asked the customers what the dish was. So last night for dinner I called because it wasn't on the menu and the woman was super courteous and helped me order for delivery. The food was amazing! I got the new shrimp special, the coconut curry with shrimp, and my kids got the chicken tenders and fries. I would 100/10 recommend this place! read more

We have been a decades old customers at Johnny Ocean's. A few weeks ago for our first time during the pandemic. We were excited to return. We sat, ordered and were shocked to look up and see Fox News playing nonstop on the TV. We endured the lies and upsetting personalities as they paraded across the screen. Our waitress was great (overworked), the food was as we remembered it. But our meal and afternoon were ruined. I have met the owner on multiple occasions when he visited our table in the past. I was surprised because of these interactions that he would allow that channel to be played at his place of business. I emailed them from their website but received no response. To air this channel in your business is such a reflection on the owner and a disrespect to his customers. We will not return. One star only due to the waitress professionalism. read more

July 12, 2021 Eugene, Oregon Server #2, long brown hair I recently took my 12 y.o. son and 85 y.o. mother to Johnny Ocean's for lunch and was horrified by the way we were treated. My mother has Alzheimer's and uses a walker to get around. She lives in memory care as her condition is terminal. Due to Covid, we were not able to even see her for many months and have only recently been able to take her out. I chose Johnny Ocean's for the outdoor seating option as I would not feel comfortable dining in with her. We found a table outside in the plaza and got Mom seated. I walked into the restaurant to find menus but didn't know where to go as there is no hostess stand at this entrance. The flow here is not intuitive even though the majority of their customers were seated adjacent to this entrance. The one server there saw me and yelled across the restaurant "ANY TABLE INSIDE, PLEASE." I told her that we had a table outdoors and she repeated "ANY TABLE INSIDE, MA'AM. ANY TABLE INSIDE." I said we'd like to sit outside and can I get some menus. She said as we walked toward each other "That is NOT our table and we do NOT service it. You are welcome to sit INSIDE, Ma'am." Her tone was atrocious. I explained that I had my elderly mother with me and would prefer to keep her outside and asked if I could place an order to go then. She said as she turned and walked away from me "You can do that if you want but you'll have to order inside." I returned to the table with the menu I found for myself and found that a table right next to the door, and more likely to be in the designated area, was being vacated (I have no idea how I was supposed to know that the table we had was not theirs). As there is a cart at the door with dirty dishes on it, I presumed that customers were invited to bus their own tables (another misleading feature of their layout). So when the couple left their table, I moved their dishes to the cart and brought my family over to sit down. The same server approached us quickly and somewhat aggressively and chastised me loudly for doing this. She said, "Ma'am!! You are NOT allowed to do that!! You CANNOT bus your own table!! If you want to sit here, you could have asked and we would have done it for you!!" Everyone was looking. I said, "You seem to be having a bad day and I'm sorry I brought my mother here to be a witness to it." She replied as she hastily wiped our table (still loudly enough that several other customers were looking at us), "MA"AM!! We could get fined $1000 for that!! You are NOT allowed to do that!!" My son and I sat there, trying not to cry, starving, trying to decide what to do. We stayed because Mom needed to eat and we had to get her back to her facility for her meds. Our server spoke to us minimally and never apologized for her behavior. If I ever go back, I will make sure I have a different server. read more

I have eaten at Johnny Oceans for years and it has been good. I enjoy a glass of riesling wine with my dinner so I ordered a glass. Their riesling wine has always been very good. Last night made the same order and the wine I was serve was simply bad. I asked the server about what had happened and she said the owner has change all their wines. To top it off the size of the glass has been reduced. No more wine for me in the future. BTW I usually order the Loco Coco but last night the breading on the shrimp was different and not as good as in the past. read more

A small slice of paradise in Eugene. I enjoyed this restaurant even with the tacky decor and the television in the corner (which, to my dismay, my father appreciated). We started with the fried plantain chips which didn't really come out crispy but a little rubbery in the center. This didn't deter from the flavor and I have to admit that I nearly licked the dipping sauce from the plate. Fish tacos and Thai coconut curry were the lunch entrees and both were worth the money spent. While I am not a fan of fried fish in my fish tacos, the breading was light and added a little crunch to the dish. The Thai curry was good but spicy which was not specified on the menu (which would have been appreciated). The reason why this rating is a four instead of a three is because of the outstanding service and the incredible homemade pumpkin cheesecake that I have dreamed about several times since the meal. This place used to serve large portions. And used to be priced reasonably. I just paid $14 for a Hamburger with skimped portions of toppings and like a 1/2 cup of fries. Cesar salad with chicken ($15) had less than half a decent chicken breast on it. I asked the waitress if the burger typically comes with more fries. She said she'd get me more (which was nice). However, they were not the same large-cut, crispy fries. They were frozen-bag thin style that you buy in the freezer section. Not going back. read more
