There is some tat but by the look of the people buying, there was also some good stuff and they were snapping it up big time. They sell beds, mirrors, pictures, antiques, dining tables the lot and from what I saw, if you can out muscle the dealers you have a bargain on your hands. You may need a little help in how to make a bid and you do need to register first but there are plenty of people on hand to talk you through it and it can be a lot of fun. Go down there just for the experience if you wish but be warned you might just fall into the trap of having a go.... Brilliant

What if I bought something that I didn't have a chance to inspect properly? I was so intimidated that I forced my boyfriend to bid for me. But, I soon got over this. I actually grabbed the bidding card from my boyfriend and went a bit mad. Just for the record, I did win, I didn't over pay and the chairs were in perfect condition! The variety of items is quite amazing from week to week. From furniture to prints to candlesticks, you can find hundreds of items with an immense amount of character. I find myself trolling the site week after week looking for my next big find. The experience is also quite pleasurable... the auctioneer is a darn funny guy, making fun of bidders and taunting them into bidding just a little bit higher. Plus, he told me I had a nice smile when I won a set of French armchairs. (When in doubt, flirt!). Anyway, the process is very organised at Lots Road Auction--you can view items online or on location a few days before the actual auction. The actual bidding process runs smoothly and on time. The payment process is equally as easy. I was even helped to a taxi with my two large chairs! I enjoyed my experience so very much! I'll definitely be back!

And when we were ready to move back to America we simply gave them a call, they picked up all our stuff, and sold it for us! We got back about 80% of what we'd paid. Not bad at all for a year of a house filled with nice antiques, and a bunch of great items that we took back home to America. Now that we're back in London, I'm sure we'll return to the Southgate Auction Rooms, even if we live a bit farther away.

This is a popular auction house good for sellers as their are lots of buyers…read more There are a large number of lots of varying quality from furniture riddled with woodworm (sometimes still active) to fine antiques that sell for thousands of pounds. My gripes are that printed catalog is £3 which is a bit pricey, and the descriptions can be a bit vague and sometimes incorrect. I brought items described as 'bleach mahogany' that turned out to be walnut, and 'elm' that was oak. So you cant rely upon the descriptions that much. But this does sometimes allow you to pick up bargins. Parking is a nightmare though, best to travel their by public transport and pick up any lots by car the following day.

I sent them emails before and after the auction, letting them know that my Buyer's Premium was 25%, that VAT should not be charged for an int'l buyer, and that I had questions about shipping internationally. Not once did they respond back to me. Then when it came time for the bill, they sent an invoice through a "MEL O'NEILL" guy who politely asked me to pay but sent me the incorrect invoice. I sent an email back to him saying that my Buyer's Premium should be 25%, not the 30% that he had incorrectly calculated. Instead, Mel O'Neill of Chiswick Auction had the nerve to have an online auction site called The SalesRoom, send me an invoice with a Buyer's Premium of 30%. I have never dealt nor signed up with The Salesroom, so of course I am very upset and I have decided that I will not pay my invoice with Chiswick because not only is the invoice incorrect and they have refused to correct it, but now I don't trust that they will release my item to a proper shipping company to get it delivered to me, so there I would have $675 (+shipping) down the drain already. DON'T DEAL WITH CHISWICK AUCTION HOUSE UNLESS YOU LIKE TO GET RIPPED-OFF.
