Truly a terrible, gruff, unfriendly guy. I couldn't wait to get out of his office, where I went for a checkup, a few years ago. He used to be friendly, when I saw him, some thirty years ago, but that all changed, most likely because of some major upheaval in his life. He's not the same guy. It must be noted that the surgery he did on me, way back when, became infected, overnight, with an abcess. When I called and told him the situation, he told me I was wrong. I know my body, I know what I felt. I demanded to come in. He took one look, and told me I needed surgery, again, immediately. He got it right, the second time, but the pain made me see stars every time I used the bathroom, for the next week, or so. Really bad: Every single colorectal specialist I called for a checkup appointment, this time around, made one for me, but then called back and told me I was this guy's patient, so they couldn't see me! What?? When I told them I didn't want to see the guy, they apologized, but said he was the head of their medical group. I had to drive to San Antonio to get a great guy to help me. read more

I had a terrible experience with Dr. Mangione. I went because I had a hemorrhoid that had thrombosed, and it was very painful. I had a camping trip to Big Bend planned in two days, and I found Dr. Mgione was part of my insurance plan and (wow---lucky) he had availability that same day. I went to see him. He said we can just ride it out; it'll go away eventually but will return, or I can clip it off, and it will never return. I agreed to do the latter. I told him about my trip, and asked if we should wait, and he said that it should be fine. So I bent over, things were numbed up, and he went to town. I left with no real instructions other than to fill a prescription for pain meds (vicodin) which I did. I drove home and had lunch. Well, 15 min later, I needed to have a BM. Oh no. I didn't realize what was going on back there, and I found something like a kotex napkin taped across my butt, which I had to remove, and gauze shoved up my butthole, which I had to pull out. The BM was painful and bloody. Then the pain began, where I was walking the floor for hours. The oxy made me nauseous. I went on my camping trip, but I was miserable. I ended up going back to Mangione about a month later because I was still in pain and still bleeding every time I had a BM. He said that I now had a fissure; he told me only 1 in a hundred get this. He suggested surgery but said it could cause incontinence. No thank you. I lived with this fissure for months, hoping it would heal, and bleeding every time I had a BM. I finally went to a good doctor at Austin Gastro, who asked if Mangione had stitched me up? I said no; the new doc said that he should have. He then asked if Mangione had recommended a stool softener while I was healing. Again no. The new doc gave me nitroglycerin cream to apply. He informed me that this might cause headaches, and it really did, but I kept applying and I finally healed, about several years after this disastrous event. This happened to me 15 years ago, but I will never forget it because it was a real mess. I am writing this to warn others. read more

I had truly one of the worst medical experiences of my life with Dr Mangione. For our initial consultation he was gruff and was irritated at me asking any questions. I had heard he was a good surgeon so I decided to go against my instincts and use him for surgery. The surgery appeared to go well, but the next day I was in severe pain and wrote his office. They told me that was normal. I then had more pain and a large swelling and I wrote again telling them that it was not going well and described what was happening. They said to send a photo (notice they didn't ask me to come into the office). I sent the photo and they said everything looked normal. I was in more pain and I finally had to tell them to put into my file that I believed I had a post surgical complication and that Dr Mangione was refusing to see me. Once they got the email (and realized that they were setting themselves up for a lawsuit by refusing to see me) they allowed me to come in. I came in, and once again Dr Mangione shouted at me, was rude and stated "I never said that I wouldn't see you!" I kept my mouth shut since I was in pain. At examination it turned out that indeed had a serious blood clot that needed further surgery. I asked for a different Dr in the practice to do the procedure since I had lost confidence in Dr Mangione, and Dr Mangione said "I won't let anyone else in my practice touch you and you will need to go schedule something with someone in Williamson county to get care." I was shocked at his response but was in so much pain I let him cut me again even though I was worried about his capabilities. After the surgery I was in such agony despite the pain meds that I almost checked myself into the ER. One month later the wound never healed and I am still suffering. Dr Mangione said that I need to have another surgery to fix the problem from him trying to correct the problem from the first surgery. I have now asked for all my medical records and have switched to another surgeon who is working to fix the problems from my interactions with Dr. Mangione. The new surgeon is actually friendly and is opening to answering questions and to discussing options, unlike Dr Mangione. I would never ever suggest anyone use him. He needs to retire and do something that doesn't make him so angry and unhappy. read more

When I went to Dr. Mangione as a scared and clueless young woman who had been experiencing serious enough problems that I sought out to consult with a colorectal surgeon costing at least $100. During this consultation with him, he had a clear demeanor of disinterest. After I told him about my difficulty nearly in tears, he would only suggest the simplest solutions- doubtful that I could possibly be having any of the issues I went on to describe. Eager to move on with his day he actually wrote a mock prescription for over the counter Miralax. This was extremely disappointing and insulting. As a young person I was looking to him as a last hope, looking to an adult to care about me and teach me what he knew, recommend a path after listening to me with the fundamental concern a doctor should possess. That in the least, could have affected my life positively. The hurt that has stuck with me about this doctor was when after every useless suggestion he had I kept assuring him that I was experiencing something of a greater caliber, he showed his true colors by raising the question of "even if you did need surgery, how would you pay for it"? It was clear at that point that Dr. Mangione had no intention of even listening to me until money was discussed. I think that could have been more tastefully raised once a plan about resolving my suffering was made. What about the money that I paid to sit and talk with him at that appointment? Surely that should have bought me a nugget of wisdom. What I have found since that bleak meeting with Dr. Mangione as he sat superior behind his desk, is that my problem was better addressed by a godsend of a physical therapist specializing in pelvic floor. Sadly Dr. Mangione didn't have the tools to connect any dots from the symptoms I was having to recommending alternative avenues. I can't speak to the quality of his surgical work and I assume that's what others are mainly rating. My rating reflects how I lost years of quality in my life because I was first discouraged by this doctor, feeling like a laughing stock under an already personal subject matter. As others have mentioned, he didn't present himself to be a warm and fuzzy doctor. However, to be honest, this didn't bother me. I like having confidence in my doctors and would rather not know that they like watching The Real Housewives or that they ride a Harley. Dr. Mangione was direct and straight to the point without being condescending or pushy. Totally appreciated! I will say this though... I did get a "fuzzy" moment from him when I was all gowned up and ready for my procedure; I became very nervous and started to well up a little. He looked at me, rubbed the top of my shins and asked, "How are you doing?" with a smile. That meant everything. He is a great doctor and I had the utmost confidence in him. read more

Dr. Mangione is the kind of guy who, when you're in the hospital, and your nurse asks who your doctor is, and you say, "Dr. Mangione," they say, "Oh, wow - that's terrific!" Because they all know him, and they all think he's excellent. How is his demeanor? He's extremely to-the-point. He's not going to treat you like a child and sugar coat things. This might come off as brusque, but really, you should appreciate that someone in the world acts like you're a competent adult, because that's a rare commodity these days. He will spend just as much time with you as you want, going over options, outcomes, side effects, and anything else you have questions about. How is his care? Fantastic. The tops. A+. If I ever need someone to cut into my gut again, or know someone who does, I'm calling Dr. Mangione. read more

As a surgeon, this doc is the best of the best! He knows his stuff and has a ton of experience. What he does well is surgery. On the other hand, I saw others post comments like, "He's not extraordinarily warm-and-fuzzy" and "He may seem a little crunchy at first" - let me tell you - that could become an important issue at times. When you're in pain, bedside manners can have a serious impact on your recovery (which is more than physical and also involves mental and emotional care as well). Some are experts in palliative care (for example, Dr. Rangwalla) but this is an area where Dr. Mangione is lacking. read more

Dr. Mangione deals with some... unpleasant medical conditions. He does so with the utmost professionalism and he knows his area very well. He is thorough and lays out your options and their associated success rates to empower you to make an informed decision about your care. Not such a good experience. The sign at the check in window reminds you that because Dr. Mangione is a surgeon, there may be a delay in your appointment time. No kidding - I waited 90 mins past my appointment time before I was allowed in. The nurse was great, but Dr. Mangione was rushed and irritated through the whole consultation. He took a call from another patient in the middle of our conversation, then took me to the exam room for about five minutes. And the price tag? $180 for a ten minute conversation and another $180 on top of that for him to shine a light up my butt. The kicker is that he mis-diagnosed me; turns out my issue was dermatological in nature, which he might have figured out had he actually taken his time talking to me. Maybe I caught him on a bad day, but I cancelled my follow up and I'd never recommend him to anyone else. read more

Of course neither one really wanted to, but the experience we had with the staff & the Dr. & the procedure was very professional, easy & we felt like they cared & took great care of us. I would highly recommend Dr Mangione. I recently went to him for hemorrhoid banding. I have read several stories about how painful that procedure is. Dr Mangione kept telling me it would not be painful, but I really did not believe him. I was dreading the procedure. It took only a few minutes and there was very little discomfort and definitely no pain. It has been two days and I have no pain or discomfort and bowel movements are not a problem. I really can not tell I have had anything done. It is amazing. Apparently the difference is the doctor's expertise at banding the hemorrhoids. Brenda B. read more

Dr. Mangione treated me for a very serious issue. He was very stern insisting that I get a scan under general anesthesia, which I didn't want to do. Thank goodness he was so insistent. The consequences could have been much worse if the issue went unchecked. I am not looking for a friendly guy with lots of free time to chit-chat. He is an excellent medical professional. I have had a very rough year and a half trying to fix what another surgeon did to me. I luckily was referred to Dr. Mangione. He is absolutely amazing and so is his nurse Rachel. Every other Dr. would try one thing and pass me to the next, but Dr. Mangione stuck with me the entire way until I was healed. Dr. Mangione was on call when my son needed emergency surgery to remove his colon. I recommend him highly based on his knowledge, experience and wonderful bedside manner. I have had such a negative experience with Johns Magnonie staff that I'm telling everyone I know (and those I don't) not to use them. Perhaps he does a decent job as MD but his staff and their "hidden fees" will charge you for things you wouldn't think of to increase their profits. read more

I've been in the US Army/Texas Army National Guard for over 21 years. I've seen many professionals in that time that had to make many life and death decisions. I rank Dr. Mangione up there with the best of these. He is the quintessential subject matter expert. His no nonsense, blunt and to the point approach is a breath of fresh air in the total civilian world.
