HE FIXES PEOPLE!…read more Robert is an artist, the admiration he enjoys from those working in Austin medicine is impressive. He's like a rock star to the hospital staff; which believe me, seeing that respect, inspires confidence and renders an apprehensive, stressful moment much easier! He is up on the latest technologies and highly skilled in an amazing number of procedures. I've had two surgeries by him, including robotic; both effective and ultimately forgettable events. His father was a legendary Austin surgeon and the apple falls close to this tree. I'm not wanting surgery, but if needed, this is where I'll go. Robert's demeanor and personal approach, is anxiety relieving and he explains your situation in understandable terms. It's also worth noting, Austin Surgeons has several other talented practitioners who have treated my family members. While Askew is my doctor, I don't think there is a wrong answer there.

His bedside manner is outstanding. Pre and post surgery he really took that extra time to explain everything to me. I knew exactly what was happening and how it would be done. His nurse, Sara, anticipated and took care of my after surgery needs. She was very personable and friendly, even when I talked to he by phone on post surgery meds! She was very patient and kind. I'm hoping I'm done with surgeries for a long while, but will be using this Dr. Askew and his team in the future if needed. Excellent job. Thank you so much for all you do!

I felt personally violated. So I was very nervous going into my first appointment Dr. Shah. I chose Dr. Shah based on several good reviews that I read online. His bedside manner was as explained in the reviews. Very kind, very patient, very informative, very "gentle." We discussed all of my options. I felt like he really took his time with me. He and I decided on the best next course of action for me to get well. For only the second time in regards to this very painful and potentially dangerous medical condition, I felt HEARD. Specifically, that Dr. Shah understood my trepidation and concerns about upcoming medical procedures. After my initial consult, somehow something got lost.In translation. Dr. Shah did refer me to another specialist; however, it was not as we had discussed in office. Since my initial visit, I have had a subsequent telehealth with Dr. Shah. Once again he addressed all of my questions. And offering telehealth is so incredibly convenient, particularly when mobility and transportation is an issue. Next step is to readdress a new referral and move forward on my medical journey. I feel like I'm in good hands...physically and metaphorically. As far as the clinic, making an appointment was really simple. Everyone at the front desk is super nice and helpful. My in office appointment was right on time. I set in the very crowded waiting room for about five minutes. I was pleasantly surprised. I recommend Dr. Shah for your medical speciality care needs. He manages to make the really not so fun and scary stuff somewhat not as bad. :)

He takes the time to actually hear to patients' concerns and offer actionable help instead of just resorting to "try this other specialist" or "take more miralax". His PA Kylie is kind, warm, and welcoming from my first visit. She immediately calmed my nerves and made me feel safe during a scary new medical situation. She is also highly responsive in the messaging portal, always taking time to respond thoughtfully and promptly to questions between appointments. I moved to the area at the beginning of the year, and couldn't feel more blessed to have found this practice.

I had a CT scan with contrast that was all clear minus a very small ovarian cyst. He advised me that no other type of scan would help and that there is nothing a CT scan with contrast could have missed that's related to my symptoms. He also said sometimes he wishes he could fake symptoms to get scans so he could rule out anything serious. That made me tear up and I told him that I am not faking symptoms to get scans - he immediately said he wasn't implying that. Just that I'm lucky to know it's not cancer or something more serious. My father has stage 3 colon cancer , my best friend has breast cancer, my work supervisor and friend"s mom has stage 4 brain cancer - so yes, I agree it's great a CT scan did not show any signs of that. Said I should come back if this gets worse (I went to see him because it was getting worse and my PCP had told me maybe I just needed a vacation). As any parent of a kid like mine knows , we don't have time to go to the doctors for ourselves. If I'm here , it's because it's already worse.

I have just spent the majority of my morning on the phone with insurance, Surigcare and Capitol Gastro--I need to vent because this whole situation is wrong. Let me start by saying, yes, I read the reviews. I now see that there are multiple Google listings for this practice. One with higher rating/reviews than the other. Overall, the reviews are bad or they are obviously fake. I was in need of a practice which was in network with my insurance. My primary care doctor gave a referral for a 45 year old first time colonoscopy SCREENING. I stress SCREENING because it is completely covered by my insurance. Any communication with the office occurs overseas. Very heavy accents, but hey, who cares? As long as they are able to schedule my appointment, I am not looking for a new best friend. My appointment got rescheduled. Still fine, things happen. Confirmation text was incorrect. Mistakes happen. Confirmation call, a new overseas caller. Day of appointment- overstressed front desk employee.I joked around about how many hats she was wearing and she apologized, saying they are extremely busy and she has multiple roles. While in the exam room, with paper thin walls, I overheard the two employees complaining about their jobs and the patients. Uh oh, RED FLAG! Dr Khaja Masi came in. Seemed nice enough. I was there for a SCREENING. I told him I was having reflux and bloating and he said while doing the SCREENING we can do an endoscopy and "take a look." Ok, you're the doctor. He then mentioned my weight and said he had a clinical trial he was involved in and thought I would be a perfect candidate. He said I would need a liver scan and some other procedure to see if I was eligible for the study. It started to feel a little pushy...I explained to him that I had restrictive insurance and I was just there for the colonoscopy, because it was covered. I did agree to the endoscopy, since he made it seem like it was a perfect opportunity to get both done at the same time. I said I wanted to hold off on the scan and he said "It needs to be done now or you'll miss the deadline." I felt like this was unprofessional for a doctor to suggest in the first 3 minutes of meeting a new patient. Dr. spent a total of 5 minutes with me in the exam room. Nurse came in and explained the procedure and said I would get a call to schedule. Scheduling (overseas friend!) couldn't get me in for a month. Totally fine, there was no rush. I got a few emails saying I needed to pay fee to the doctor before the procedure or it would get cancelled. Surgicare called me saying I needed to pay for the endoscopy portion for facility charge. Denise was helpful it explaining to me that even though the colonoscopy is fully covered, the endoscopy is separate and I would get charged for that. Fine, understood. Fast forward to day of procedures. Everything was great. Everyone at Surgicare was friendly and the facility is clean. Entering into the operation room, Dr. was there and was reading over his notes. No bedside manner. No friendly hello. It felt like he was banging these things out and had no time for pleasantries. Nurse afterwards was able to tell me that everything looked good and there were a few biopsies done. That I would hear from the the doctor in the next 2 weeks. I get a call a week and a half later from India saying that my followup appointment will be in 2 weeks and it will be a virtual call. During brief call I was told biopsies came back great and a polyp was removed. Fast forward to a month later and all the bills start arriving. Thousands of dollars in bills that seem to be my responsibility. After many calls I learn that my procedure was submitted with a code that is not covered. I CANNOT GET IN TOUCH WITH ANYONE AT THE OFFICE. Overseas man just wants to transfer me to Gad in billing and Gad said he has no control over Dr. codes. I am grateful the procedure went well and I am not left with any holes in my esophagus or intestines but NOW WHAT?
