Although the primary focus of the center is to assist disabled veterans with finding career opportunities in the Washington DC area, many of their workshops and events are open to the local veteran community and are held primarily during weekday daytime hours. They also run the Washington DC Kaufman FastTrac class for new and aspiring military veteran entrepreneurs. I came here for the FastTrac program, which I'd highly recommend to anyVET who's contemplating owning and operating their own business. You do have to sign in at the front desk of the building, but sometimes the concierge is inconsistent so I'm not sure if it's a building thing or what - either way be sure to check in with the front desk. There are other nonprofits that inhabit the building but I'm not sure about their mission/focus. At the veterans center on the 2nd floor there's restrooms, two classrooms and a mini-lounge area with materials about other veterans-centric programs/events occurring in the area. They're not open on the weekends but I think that's because the building itself isn't open then. There were vendors, free giveaways, DJs, food, young adults, seniors, people in wheel chairs, people of every age, race, color, creed were there. What stood out to me were the Drag Queens completely decked out, approachable and available for photo-ops. The weather was hot. It's a good idea to come with an Iced water bottle to stay hydrated. The event was well organized. There were scheduled events all over the city. The website described what was going on from free to ticketed events.

Granted, most…read moretimes I am here to work at a booth for my place of work, but every so often I get to be out and explore. (Apologies for such a late post for this review, I'm just that backed up on reviews). Like I said, when I am usually here, it is t be working a booth during the festival day...or, come to think of it, marching in the parade. Being on the side of things where you are participating in the events and having to deal with the organization is a a bit eye opening. Participating usually starts rather early and towards the last three months of the year prior. It moves rather quickly and you have to have all your ducks in a row. However, if you do, it goes rather smoothly. Especially if you already have an account and know what you are doing. Steps progress rather quickly and you will be uploading documents, attending mandatory meetings, and be upon your way to the day. The only downside here is that they seem to make the meeting (that could be an email) for participants mandatory. It's not easy to work that into your schedule, last minute I might add, when you are travelling for work. Come the day of the events and they run rather smoothly. The festival day is packed full of people and it is crazy how everything goes off without a hitch. Music is everywhere, people are having a good time, and the smells are wonderful. All the vendors offering food make it feel like you are at a state fair. Hopefully one of these years I'll have time to explore more and just be here on my own time. Wish it would be next year as DC will be hosting World Pride.

There are big names in there like Francis Scott Key's desk. With very vague connections to George Washington, we get to really explore Martha and center the effects of her influence. So if you really want to know more about female history and narratives, its something you should see. The guided tours are extremely informational, and the house is just potent with original artifacts. Our tour guide was as so well versed and invested in the knowledge tied to the property and its people. This is a very delicate house, so there are stanctions and heavy no touching signs but there are also historical recreations and audio guides that attempt to offer some immersive elements. They're also centering other voices related to Martha's lineage and not ignoring the slave presence on the property (though it could be more prominent). There is also a well maintained garden and vast green space that is probably at its peak in the spring - summer months. Gift shop is also very good! Highlight: Hair brooches (might no longer be on view, but do know they are in the collection).

Representing 2nd quarter 2019 in scrapbook series is Nationals Park. I've been to Nationals Park…read moremultiple times over the past decade. My very 1st game was on Memorial Day 2013, which was a Beltway series against the O's. At the time, I was living in Alexandria; so I was geographically closer to DC than Baltimore. So naturally, I was rooting for the Nats. My friend who was a Phillies fan was rooting for the O's. In 2021, O's became my #1 team, and Nats moved from 2nd favorite to least favorite. Nats gained a bit back, maybe now 4th or 5th least favorite team. In spite of not liking the Nats now, it's still a solid ballpark. At some point, I'll give a 5-star review to Camden Yard in Baltimore. I like Nats Park better than Wrigley Field (Chicago Cubs)...see my 3-star of them from October 2025. Rate Field (Chicago White Sox) I gave 4-stars that same day in October. I think Nats Park is even a bit superior to Rate Field. The thing that is a winning factor for Nats Park is some good city views of US Capitol & various other buildings particularly in the nosebleed seats. The ballpark is spacious. You come in a grand entrance. Their mascot is Screech, an oversized bald eagle. But even more well known are the oversized Presidents. I've said hello to Lincoln (my favorite President) as well as Washington, Jefferson, & Teddy Roosevelt greeting fans. By far, Teddy is the most popular people root for when they race around the ballpark in the 4th inning. I'd be happy for Teddy as that's what the majority want, but I don't have a strong opinion. Regardless of who wins, it's entertaining to watch. In September 2015, I took pics of US Presidents in race greeting fans in the front. For a few years, they were honoring William Howard Taft, who was the 1st President to throw out a ceremonial pitch. It was in April 1910 in DC, the Washington Senators vs. Philadelphia Athletics. I'm pictured with Calvin Coolidge who they used for some of 2015 season in the race. Eating options are plentiful, but of course overpriced, but some good unique variety. In August 2024, I had Arepa, which was great. Fun fact: The last FIVE games I was rooting for the other teams (Rangers, White Sox, O's, Reds, & Brewers all lost when I saw them), and Nats won. My intention is good luck to the other team, but just my luck Nats win every time. Maybe I should go when Dodgers or Yankees visit; that's when I'd want to give Nats some luck! In July 2023, I was rooting for Texas Rangers. I had the starting pitcher in my Fantasy baseball league. My friend was running a bit behind. I waited by Metro for him, and I was checking on my phone Rangers didn't score in 1st inning. Then, it was Nats turn at bat, and all of sudden I heard loud cheering, it was a 3-run homer, then a 1-run homer. 4-0. My pitcher got lit up with 36 ERA in the 1st inning. I was annoyed with a rain delay that occurred. Almost the entire DC area wasn't experiencing rain but an isolated thunderstorm blew through Alexandria & Reagan National Airport and came right over Nats Park. The rain lasted maybe 15 minutes, but the game was delayed 1.5 hours, which I thought was ridiculous. I thought it might've been a ploy to get people to buy more drinks or food. But I wasn't going to do that. So instead of eating dinner after the game perhaps 6:30 or 7, it was after 8 PM. In September 2023, I had extra leave time for work I needed to use by end of month. I went to a Wednesday day game against White Sox. It was high scoring game for Nats 13 runs, and slightly below the median with only 3 for the White Sox. In May 2024, I was decked out in my O's shirt & hat for the Beltway series. Of course, my O's were bums...their final # of runs was a big fat O, while Nats got 3 or a sideways curly W for them. Then, Nats beat Cincinnati Reds when I was there in July 2024. Carly Rae Jepson performed that night, which was cool. Finally, in August 2024, I was rooting for my Milwaukee Brewers. But of course, they had to be total bums until 8th inning, where they caught up to only lose by 1 run. Conclusions: Nats Park is good solid ballpark. It's not the most architecturally appealing on the design like more the classic Camden Yard style, but it still does the job for good spectating.

The entrance is on the rounded corner where you press the intercom to be let in. Downstairs, a nice army reservist introduced us to the gallery and spoke with us for a few minutes before we set off on our own--and at that time on a Friday morning, we were entirely on our own. Their displays and upkeep of artifacts should do the National Guard very proud. There are many interesting bits and pieces of the service's history and the people who made up this militia. So why would I only give it about 3.5 stars? Because the indoctrination is so real. The homogeneity of the introductory video was emphasized for me when the National Guard's contributions were being enumerated. The narrator mentions how Guards helped maintain order in the 1960s when "domestic tranquility was marred by civil (unrest)," and once my mind snagged on that branch, I kept getting pulled back to it. How telling that efforts to level the playing field for ALL Americans is considered "marring" by the National Guard narrator. Don't even get me started on the heroic and victorious portrayal of armed colonists against the Native Americans. It was an informative and infuriating way to spend the hour before more kid-friendly museums opened.

The night we went, they were having a happy hour with a free appetizer buffet and discounted beer and cocktails. We really liked this, and I recommend the Pina Colada. Another cool thing was that they had a basket of popcorn on every table. I don't know if they do this every night or if this was part of the happy hour, but I love popcorn, so I was thrilled. I love the Navy Memorial so I thought I would take the chance to check out the Naval Heritage Center. The center has a few exhibits and a gift shop but I wouldn't really consider it a museum - more of a space to enrich the memorial out front. I think the primary purpose of this space is to provide some insight into this great country's naval heritage (including the Navy, Marine Corps, Merchant Marines and Coast Guard) through the exhibits and movies they play there. When I visited a movie wasn't playing unfortunately but I would like to come back and check out the documentaries, perhaps on a hot and humid sumer day. This also seems like a great place to research naval history as they seemed to have a nice, niche library for those purposes. Additionally, I understand private events can be hosted in the back room. I always appreciate a space that is dedicated to honoring our military.
