If you're looking for one of those undiscovered little museums in DC, the Naval Heritage Center is a great place to go. I spent most of March here, as my theatre group rented out the Center to perform in the Burke auditorium, and we had a wonderful experience here. The theatre is small and intimate, just the right size for a wonderful live performance. It is also used for lectures, presentations, and ceremonies, as well as showing movies on the huge floor to ceiling screen that covers the back wall of the "stage" area. They have kept the floor we built over the carpet for our performance, so it is now well-prepared for any further live theatre.
They also have the President's Room for dinners, receptions, and other gatherings, and between that and the lobby they are quite well-prepared for any event to be hosted there. We had a quite few evenings with a band performing in the lobby for guests, or small receptions, etc, as well as serving refreshments every night during intermission.
The staff are all very friendly, and came to be almost a part of our group, helping out in any way they could, and even guest performing once or twice!!
As for the museum itself... why this is here after all... :-) It is a great little museum. They have many different audio-visual displays with the current videos playing, a memorial section to locate any loved one who has served in the navy, memorial plaques for different ships, a "meditation room" with Bibles, etc, the obligatory gift shop, a small research library, displays about the navy and what they do, as well as changing exhibitions, all in this small space. The exhibition that went up as we were leaving was really neat, complete with an entire fort built inside! There is not a *lot* to see, but they do pack quite a lot into the small space, and do a great job of making it interesting and accessible.
Outside is the Navy Memorial, which is a wonderful pavilion with benches, fountains, ships' flags, etc, with inspiring quotations and a very neat huge map of the world in the pavement.
The Metro comes up right at the Memorial, so access to the Memorial and the Heritage Center is very convenient. read more
