Yesterday's routine cleaning went like this: I heard Queen and Bowie over their sound system while getting a paraffin hand treatment during a cleaning. They offer a menu of extras to make the process so much more bearable. Besides a hand treatment, you can ask for a massage cushion, a blanket, earplugs, etc, that can make you feel comfortable. A hot towel at the end of the treatment is so refreshing. Not only do they have these spa-like extras, but the way Dr. Nishiguchi and his hygienists (I currently have Janice and she is a sweetheart) perform the actual dental treatments with such care and precision. I've only had cleanings there but in addition to cleanings, my son has had an extraction. He did not like going to the dentist until he started going their office but they are so friendly and professional that he doesn't feel apprehensive about visiting. I've also had pleasant surprises with friends whom I didn't know were also patients until I saw them there. I can't recommend Dr. Nishiguchi and staff enough!

Like what other reviewers pointed out, there seems to be a frequent tendency for them to emphasize your need for higher level services. This is my second visit and twice, did the hygienist strongly recommend that I go through a 2-3 hour deep cleaning procedure - something that was never, ever suggested by other dentists. They also have a rather strong sales pitch. The way they approach you and communicate the "treatment plan" makes you believe that you are expected to move forward with what they recommend. And unless you really think about what they are selling... you will probably jump right ahead into what they suggest. When I go to a medical professional, I expect to be treated as a patient who is need of essential care. That means receiving only medically necessary interventions and nothing else. I am not a customer, and shouldn't be sold anything that I don't need.

I was there yesterday for a cleaning before I dashed off to a fancy gala event. Since I last wrote my review, I must admit I have strayed to another dental location out of sheer laziness and not wanting to drive to town...big mistake! I don't want to bad-mouth (get it, 'mouth'?) the other dental office but let's just say I wasn't very impressed. Once you've had a really stellar experience it's hard to expect anything less. Should I break it down for you? Honesty: my mouth had fallen prey to a dishonest dentist who ruined my teeth promising and assuring me that capping all my teeth with crowns was a good idea, even if my teeth did not need crowns. Ever since he messed me up, I've needed gum surgery and root canals. Dr. Emory Young is the total opposite, he won't try to sell you things you don't need. You'd think dentists are supposed to be honest but watch out for the ones who tell you your whole mouth should be crowned. Communication: Dr. Emory is great at it. He will explain everything in plain English. Maybe he'll tell you about his surfing experiences or his smart talented daughter too. He's easy to talk to and makes you feel at ease. You can ask him anything and he'll give you a straight answer. He always makes me laugh, and that is hard for a dentist to do (childhood trauma with dentists...gives me nightmares) Awesome cleanings: I'm not just saying Suzie is the best on the island because I've been going to her for years, but because I've had my teeth cleaned by other (ahem) dental offices that don't really do such a thorough job. I've had one hygienist tell me "wow your teeth are so clean" and proceeds to rush through the cleaning because, apparently my teeth are so clean they don't need deep cleaning? She also told my husband the exact same thing so I'm thinking she tells everyone the same thing? Clean or not, you'll get your money's worth with Suzie. She will take the time to examine your face from the outside in. She actually found an abcess on my gum on a routine cleaning that was painless but turned out to be a huge deal. If it wasn't for Suzie I may have lost the tooth. Ease in making appointments: Suzie has Saturday cleanings too!
