Scenario: 10 months in Honolulu, small filling that was replaced in Dec. 2021 by long-term dentist felt funny. Needed a cleaning and a check of filling. Home dentist said he put it back on without drilling, but should be watched in case it fell off. I didn't even feel it was gone it is so small. Most everything about the Uwaine practice is well run. I regret that when I called to ask about an appointment and to say I'd decline x-rays, the receptionist wanted to refer me to indigent care clinic. My understanding was , no x-ray, no cleaning. Scared and traveling and worried about new filling. I have great teeth, regular cleanings etc. I ended up getting the x-rays at Uwaine practice and a $300+ bill. Filling still in place. New experience was cleaning by water, during severe drought conditions on Oahu. Auwe. I would have liked the opportunity to talk to the dentist first before x-ray. Reading Barbara Ehrenreich's book "Natural Causes" which mentions the over-use of x-rays, especially by dentists. I have to fend off x-rays repeatedly at my home practice. What I learned: one may be worried. take time and advocate for yourself. Try to decline x-rays, or if you are going to be away and in need of a cleaning, figure out how to get your dentist to share most recent x-rays. Both Uwaine and home dentist said hard to share dental x-rays in terms of image quality. I wished I'd looked into this more as part of trip planning and booking in at this dentist for cleaning. The lost filling did crop up at last minute before departure, during regular cleaning, that's my excuse, but ANY IONIZING RADIATION of YOUR HEAD IS not a good idea. I consoled myself by hoping Uwaine practice x-ray equipment is new and well-maintained (look in PubMed, dental office x-ray equipment sometimes is NOT--another reason to to work with your dentist to minimize x-trays, as I recall from another attempt to fend off x-rays with home dental hygienist), and since I minimize x-rays I hoped I could afford this radiation dose. Read Ehrenreich's book! I do understand dentists/their staffs are also faced with people who don't regularly go to the dentist, some of them wrote reviews of Uwaine practice. What I am asking for is evidence that x-rays EVERY cleaning--which hygienists seem to want to do-- is safe and a best practice. My review of dental literature from searches of PubMed dot gov --the premier biomedical database and according to Richard Smith, former editor of British Medical Journal, PubMed is "One of America's two greatest gifts to the world" --is that fewer dental x-rays is better. read more
