I had a picture of what I wanted, knowing it wouldn't be exact, but asked for it to be an inch longer. what I ended up with was two to three inches shorter and not even. So, now I have a butchered hair cut that is too short and can't even go somewhere else to have it fixed as it will only become shorter. By the way, my hair was down below my shoulders. Stay clear, Saturday morning and only about three chairs occupied should have spoken volumes. $68 later and I've no idea what to do with this hair and by the way, my stylist? This is the only place I trust for my hair. After my fortuitous first time getting placed with Nancy, who I discovered knows the struggle of thick, long, unmanageable hair, I've gone to her ever since! She takes care to make sure it is absolutely perfect, and for the amount of time she spends with me the price is so worth it! She has an excellent judge of how hairstyles will turn out, and even my least favorite cut/color (a little blonder than I wanted) turned out to be my absolute favorite when my hair settled back into its "I never blow dry my hair/always bed head" style and what I thought was too much blonde at first was the best natural looking highlight job I've ever seen and really fits my complexion. Plus, she knows I'm low maintenance so she designed it so when it grows out I don't have to rush in to get it fixed, it looks natural as my roots come in and it's absolutely gorgeous! Nancy is a true artist and I'm so happy to have found her here! Overall the location is clean, cute but trendy, all the ladies are super nice, and those hair massages you get when they wash your hair are 100% worth going in just to get your hair washed haha. Then when I showed her a picture of me with a haircut I had 4 months prior she told me I don't have hair like that and it won't look like the picture. It was me in the picture... She then started talking about how thin my hair is and saying I'm going to go bald. I have a full head of hair, even if her client is showing signs of going bald you shouldn't make them feel bad about it like she was trying to do. When she was done it looked nothing like I wanted. Alright, so I had been thinking about getting a haircut for a while. Until very recently, I sported the straight long hair that was so low maintenance for me because all I would do is wash it in the morning and let it dry throughout the day. But I wanted a hairCUT, not hair that's just there. Or just change it up a little, you know. I was thinking about this as I was leaving work one day, and I decided to bike over to this salon, because it's so close to my place. See if I can get an impulsive haircut and not worry about it anymore. I got there only to find out that they were closed, but the two women who informed me of this fact also invited me to come inside and make an appointment for the next day. I felt like I had to do that to make this happen, because if I had just gone home, I probably would have just continued thinking about it and not actually do anything. So I made an appointment with Scarlet, came home, and read some Yelp reviews. Lots of people rave about her, so at least I knew I was in good hands. The next day came and I had decided to go hard. The day before, I was considering cutting a few inches and maybe getting bangs. With a little bit of persuasion from our drummer who suggested going short, I changed my mind and had settled on a bob. I showed up for my appointment and showed Scarlet the picture of the haircut I wanted. She said okay and, once I was in my chair, she told me that she wouldn't let me do it if she thought I would look stupid. In a few minutes, my hair was in ponytails and Scarlet checked with me to make sure I was ready/sure before cutting 12 inches of my hair. That was probably the longest hair I parted with in just one haircut and I felt a strange sense of relief. Maybe it was just from finally making a decision after saying I needed a haircut for months, or maybe it was from feeling like it was okay to take these steps towards dealing with a heartbreak. Once the length was gone and we were working on the specifics of the cut, I started to worry if I would look like a 5 year old with a bowl cut. Scarlet took care of that issue by giving me some layers, while also not going to the extremes of the picture I showed her. She said, "I made it more normal. We can always cut more, but we can't get it back once it's gone." I thought about whether I wanted the exact style that was in the picture, but I'm not the type to go to the salon every month, so I decided that this would give me an easier time growing my hair back out. I have had good experiences here before, but Shelly brought the average star rating down. She outright did not listed to me when I said I wanted a trim. I told her my wedding was in a few weeks and that I wanted long hair for it and would cut more off after the wedding. I have long brown hair down to my waist and every year I dread getting my hair cut because stylist charge me an extra $30+ on top of the $50-60 cut so usually getting out $90 lighter and not exactly happy with little things walking out. So before I came, I called and they told me with my long hair it will be $30 starting. So after a few rescheduling issues I was met up with right away with the sweet beloved Nancy. She asked if I wanted to wash my hair and I just went for it because "treat yo self" lol. The lady who washed my hair was the sweetest lady possible. I wish I saw her to leave her a tip before I left. After the washing, Nancy listened to all my needs (the way I want it layered, bangs and how it's parted) and she did an AMAZING JOB!!! In my 27 years living I cannot be more happy with how my hair turned out!! When I was done I went up to the counter and was expecting something way above the $30 but the receptionist charged me on $28!!! I signed up for a $25 haircuts and was offered while I was in the chair if I wanted her to show me how to curl it, after making me feel bad about not styling everyday or using products, and then when I got to the counter and they charged me $77. As we talked about I am a student, you can't just blindly charge people for something I didn't schedule. I will not be coming back because of her and this. I've also never wanted to shower after coming out of a haircut, after I told her I don't use product she used what felt like most of a bottle of mousse. So now I show up on John Jay's doorstep once every year or so begging Scarlet to fix my mistakes. I haven't let anyone but myself and Scarlet touch my hair for about 3 years now (and thanks to some self-control it's mostly been her touching it) Scarlet really is the best. She does amazing cuts, color, and highlights. She stood with me through all the awkward stages as my hair grew from a short boyish cut, to an inverted bob, to a medium-length layered cut... John Jay is a little more expensive than what I am accustomed to. However, Neomi, is totally worth it. I have received excellent hair cuts from her. I only see her a few times a year but when I leave I feel great. Sometimes I bring in pictures of people's hair that I have ripped out of magazines and she teaches me how to recreate the hairstyle. Now, that is love. When I had to get my eyebrows waxed, a terribly unfortunate experience, the woman doing them was well trained. She also made sure that it didn't hurt. How that was possible? The only downfall to this place, well the biggest downfall, is that they charge for hair drying after color--is this new york?? even in new york i would pay a fortune but at least a blowout was included! my hair colorist left, alison, but she was AWESOME! this was the only place in nola that would leave me absolutely satisfied with my color, without any roots! they do some sort of root lifter they leave on your hair after washing out the color, and its AMAZING! it reeks, and you have to sit there holding your breath for about 5 minutes, but totally worth going (and leaving with dripping hair to dry yourself and save $30!)! the decor is pretty poor, it looks like a cheap mens barbershop or something, but the coloring is great. that said, my friend got her hair colored here and had a disaster, but i think they would have fixed it had she complained.. read more

The lady I had was super friendly and nice but i felt very scared as she was doing my hair. I believe you should tell the stylist what you want and they should then repeat that back to you so both parties are on the same page. She wasn't telling me what she was planning on doing or how different it would look or how different i wanted it to look! She finished up and I was hopeful however my hair was not even touched up all the way. I have very dark roots and blonde highlighted hair. The highlights were uneven and it did not even look like a fresh dye job. My roots were still black and my hair looked a little less grown out then when i walked in there. I've not been in here in quite a while but I believe that my experiences in this establishment should be catalogued, just in case (why does everything happen to me??) A few years ago, I switched up from a shop I used to get 'my hair did' to this place on a suggestion from a co-worker. I'm a man and I personally don't mind a girl OR a guy chopping at my locks, so long as they know what they are doing and have the proper tools (OMG, are those pruning shears?! Get back, you beast! :: brandishes said individual with a stick:: ) Anyway, the inside of the joint was clean enough, although the overwhelming scent of styling chemicals placed me in an almost comatose state. Maybe that's their trick; lure you in with a coupon and intoxicate you out with products so that you don't struggle much in the chair, as they continue to hack away. In any case, the hostess/receptionist/whatever at the front counter upon entry was kind enough. I had called ahead and made an appointment with one of their better styling gurus so I hung out in the waiting room until she was ready for me. This particular stylist (not mentioning names) took me to her torture chamber near the rear of the facility, while asking me questions about my hair, in an effort to size up how much pleasure she was going to get out of having her way with my skull. A few questions later, she's off, chopping this way and that. In the process, she was telling me over and over how much experience she had and that those around her simply didn't have the skills she had. As she's telling me this, I began to get this searing pain at the back of my neck. I later got the same pain in other areas and it wasn't until I got home that I realized the pain was due to cuts she gave me with the clippers. Good god, is it too much to ask someone with elite hair cutting skills to have a steady hand? I like Katherin Hepburn and all but I would never have let her have a go at my hair in her later years! I figured that maybe I just got a bad crop that time around so I gave it another shot. This time, I was seated with a young, spryly girl from Dallas (again, no names....trying to be respectful). She had this inappropriate looking top on that resembled fishnet material and her boobs were practically spilling out onto me (as I'm writing this, I'm now wondering how many men are going to promptly make an appointment). As she's working on my hair, she's going through all these radical motions with her body, literally placing her boobs in my face at all times. It couldn't have just been coincidence. She was cutting my hair from behind me and still managed to find a way to get them in my face. How is that possible?? Plastic Woman, maybe?? Who knows?? I tried to keep my composure, as if her boobs weren't literally resting on my cheek, and start a conversation. After a while, she backed off on using her breasts to anchor onto my body and reciprocated the chat. However, very early into the discussion, the conversation took a grisly spiral into the underworld. She began to speak about her private life; some guy that she was dating and that he hadn't told her that he contracted crabs. She asked me "who does that to someone they love? Wouldn't you say something??" I was horrified but then thinking to myself "why are you telling me about this or even asking?? Further, what does it say about you that you're dating a guy with crabs??" I steered the conversation away to something else but as she was washing my hair later in the process, she started telling me about how she was unlucky with her relationships with men, that they are always into kinky stuff. Did she think that because I was relatively close to her age, I could relate?? Good god, if she brings up anything about a brief experimentation with a ball-gag, I am running straight out of here! Looking back on the experience, I should have left VERY early on, before she had a chance to get deeper into explanation. I don't know why I stuck around. I guess I was tired of fighting trying to find a good barber? No, that's not a good enough reason to sit there, listening to an employee discuss sexual exploits and STD's. Never again. I've since begun getting my hair cut at Stardust Salon on Magazine St., which is a much, much better outfit and I'll be posting a review of them in the days to come. For those of you thinking about using this joint, my tale is just a warning. You may have great experiences. I did not. Actually, I was quite scared. -3 stars were docked for the horrible stories the stylist shared with me. 2 stars were awarded because they actually do cut hair there. read more

I give 3.5 stars for John Jay. From what I hear, you are much less likely to get a mullet here than, say, supercuts on carrolton. Although to be honest, I probably would have risked a mullet if John Jay wasn't offering 1/2 off cuts for students! With that discount it was ~$16 before tip for my cut. read more

I went to John Jay today after making a last-minute appointment, which they were able to accommodate with no problem. I showed my stylist, Joni, a picture of what I was interested in and after she looked at it and spoke to me for a minute she was able to give me a really cool haircut. I went home, rinsed it and played around a bit, then did something that I do occasionally which is flat iron my hair after a haircut. To me, that shows the skill, accuracy and overall quality of the cut. Looks awesome! I'm really happy with my haircut. The reason I am giving it four stars out of five is because I think I was charged extra for the blow drying at the end. She was really cool and trying to show me what to do, even though I said I don't usually dry my hair... But If I was being charged more, I would've liked to of known it before it happened. Let me start off by saying that this is my first yelp review ever, although I've been avidly using app for over four years. I'm addicted to this thing-- I mean I use it for references to everything, everywhere. Whether if I'm trying to find the best place to eat around town, the perfect eye brow studio or local excursions, I am constantly referring to yelp to give me the answers. Sadly, I have never once left my own review after I have exploited the claims of my fellow yelp reviewers. So to say that this is my first review... you know it's got to be extremely bad or even better, extremely good. Nonetheless, this one is going to be a long guys, but I promise you it is worth reading. I'm one of those people who has never had loyalty to any one particular hair stylist, rather I kind of go with who all my friends are currently going to, or whoever I can have access to readily, I'll blame that one to my impulsivity. I've also never left a salon feeling GREAT about my hair because no matter what color I dye it, I always have second thoughts and caved into going back to my jet black Asian hair. But I lately, I have been thinking about going blonde.. because everyone should at least be blonde once in their lifetime right? Well after I gathered all my courage and discarded all my doubts, I headed over for a consultation with Ai Vi, whose work I really admired on one of my friends and Instagram. Ai Vi's blondes were just wow. The first thing I noticed was how welcoming she was. She gave me a hug and introduced herself and we talked about my current hair, my end goal, and the reality of reaching that goal. She was very honest from the beginning on what was achievable and what was probably not that likely. One week later, I was in her chair, bright and early. There were never awkward moments of silence with Ai Vi, she was always very patient and informative whenever I would bombard her with questions during the process such as, "how's it looking?", "what's this technique called?", "is it blonde yet?" She was just so nice and sweet, and it sort of surprised me because I've never really been able to talk to any of my other stylists that way. The best part was, she really dedicated her time to working on my hair, as she didn't book any other appointments near or within the time frame mine was in. And let me tell you, I was there for 7+ hours. A lot of stylists work on multiple people at once and sometimes it turns out great but sometimes it makes you worry that they are forgetting about you. So it was really nice of her to be focusing solely on me. She was so passionate about what she did and she never once got lazy or tired even though i have really thick and stubborn Asian hair that I've bleached a few times only to use jet black box hair dye over it two weeks later every single time... But low and behold, 7+ hours later and my hair went from a dark orange brassy balayage to a platinum grayish blonde, something I thought would never be achievable. (Of course there are still a few stubborn strands of pale yellow hair because it's only my first session, I mean what can I expect and I am the only one to blame for my butchered multi-toned hair, right?)There are so many good things that I can say about her but I don't think it would do her, or her work justice. The best advice is to just go. She does anything from icy blondes to deep reds to metallic blues. Not only talented, but such a cool and sweet person overall. I definitely will be back for her--probably a little too much, as my addiction is now not only with yelp advice, but perfecting my blonde with someone who I can trust! read more

Took a chance today and got an appt with Scarlet after reading all her great reviews. She did not disappointment me.. she was easy to talk to and truly loves what she does. I have wavy,curly and at times crazy frizzy hair so i get a hair cut twice a year because it's not worth it, but Scarlet knew exactly my issue. My hair looks great. Plus i had a deep conditioning treatment..and she gave me samples of product to try instead of pushing products on me like other salons!! It was a treat! read more

Honestly I went into John Jay to get a simple, silky blowout with flippy ends. I figured how hard can that be? I walked out with my hair looking like a frizzy mess and feeling like straw due to the product I asked the lady not to use. I think it is unacceptible that someone is allowed to work at a salon and is incapable of executing a standard simple blowout and i so not recommend going to this salon as I was still forced to pay for the absolutely abomitable blowout. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Scarlett Howell at John Jay on St. Charles!! I am obsessed with my hair, so I spent 4 years in New Orleans refusing to get my hair cut and/or colored anywhere in the city and instead chose to fly to my hometown of Los Angeles whenever I needed a spruce up. Finally, I discovered Scarlett completely by accident when I got desperate and needed someone to trim my bangs for me in the city. As soon as I met her I was completely at ease, she was calm and reassuring, and so sweet! I was so impressed with my fortunate discovery of her that I even sent my fiance in to see her while he was visiting from California and he was blown away too. He started scheduling visits to see me around when he needed another Scarlett haircut! After a few amazing haircuts on him I finally gave in and let someone outside of Los Angeles cut and color my hair...and I LOVED IT!! I feel like an idiot for having gone 4 years without her. Her attention to detail is unparalleled, and she is extremely approachable and open to different opinions, all while maintaining an impeccable eye for what will make you look the best. And on top of all that, her prices are very reasonable and an amazing value considering how much time and care she will spend on your hair. I literally cannot say enough wonderful things about Scarlett at John Jay, and now that I've moved back to LA I wish I could take her with me. I went to john jay for a blow out and came out looking like a poodle. She insisted that she use an iron to curl my hair when I wanted bouncy waves. I was in utter shock at how my hair looked. I have to second the other review about the wonderful Scarlett Howell at John Jay on St. Charles. I moved to New Orleans a little over a year ago and got a reference from a family friend (alllll the way from Mississippi, about an hour and a half away) that Scarlett was THE hair stylist to see in New Orleans, particularly for color. When I first went, I was a blonde who was extremely picky about my coloring so this was important. I have never been more happy with my hair than I have been over the past year. The cut always falls just right so that it makes it easy for me to style my hair myself. The coloring is always right on cue with what I'm looking for as well. I'm always confident that Scarlett will have me leaving the salon looking like a million bucks and she hasn't disappointed yet! I've been able to try more trendy hair styles and colors that I was always too afraid to try before because I know Scarlett knows what she is doing. As far as hair styling goes...WOW. Seriously, I look like a Victoria Secret model or other person with fabulous hair every time I leave. Over the past year, I've sent my mother, my best friend, my best friend's mother, AND my boyfriend all to see Scarlett and everyone leaves absolutely enthralled at their new hair. Always fun, always fresh! I also get my eyebrows waxed regularly at John Jay by Aivi and I feel like this is the best these bushy pipe cleaners have looked in their whole lives! My eyebrows are really thick and grow like crazy with almost no arch, but she is always able to tame them and I even have a little bit of an arch now! If I could give this salon no stars I would. Up there with one of the worst experiences I've ever had, which is a shame because it came as a recommendation from 2 friends. Where do I start! I emailed the address on the website along with filling in the request form to book an appointment, to this day I have received absolutely no email reply to either avenue. So, i called to book (I pointed out that maybe they should have a look at their online system as they might be losing business by not answering emails or request forms, to which the helpful lady said, and I quote "that has nothing to do with me, that would be the head office"... errrr ok, how about you offer to pass on my recommendation?) The lady on the phone could also not tell me the price of my root bleach, nor even give me an estimate! I came for my scheduled appointment on the 29 April arriving 10 minutes early. i waited about a minute whilst the 2 receptionist finished their personal conversation and only when a stylist assistant saw my look of frustration did she step in and show me where to wait... and wait... and wait... and wait! 40 minutes after my scheduled appointment time, with absolutely no apologies or update on what was happening throughout did my stylist come over nonchalantly asking "so, what are we doing here"... ok, how about, Im so sorry we are running behind, or even how are you.. she was just plain rude. She then did a rush job, my bleach roots are now orange and not white and to boot, the cost of the bleach was 3 times more than the website, even more than I pay in New York.
