Not only is their social media on point, but it has been the most pleasant experience I have ever had at the dentist. Their office is so open and modern and clean. The entire staff is very welcoming and they offered me water or coffee to drink while I was waiting. Dr. Humphrey is super friendly and makes you feel very comfortable. He walked me through what work he would be doing and answered all of my questions. I also really appreciate that he takes a holistic/modern combo approach to his practice. He was super supportive of me removing my silver fillings, which some dentists may steer you away from. KC Dental Works also has some of the best technology in the city to safely remove amalgam fillings, from what I've been informed. They use several different techniques to ensure that no mercury enters your body from extraction, which is obviously appreciated! I live downtown but it is worth the drive to Lenexa to see this dentist!

Also be aware that our case is not unique- we know other families treated by Dr. John Humphrey with very similar experiences: I have taken my kids to Dr. Humphrey for the entirety of their childhood lives (4 & 5yo). I followed the directions given by him- toothpaste recommendations, floss and even ozone therapies for my older child. He filled several cavities in my older child's mouth over the course of her 4th and 5th years (even re-did some because they fell out). In October of 2022, we went in for a routine cleaning and were told my oldest child (5yo) had two new cavities (we are on fillings number 6 & 7 at this point) and that he would see us back in 5 months (!) to fill them. Two weeks later, part of one of her teeth fell completely off. I texted the office immediately that evening and got a response in the morning from the front desk explaining that he didn't have time to see us for another 5 months, so we would have to go elsewhere. So, mortified that our "trusted" dentist wouldn't see my 5yo daughter with an urgent dental issue, I reached out to numerous pediatric dentists in the area and made appointments over the next several days. We then found out that Dr. Humphrey had missed NINE cavities in my child's mouth- nine. She was sitting there with 11 decaying teeth in her mouth and he was willing to have her wait 5 months before filling the two that he had found. All of the pediatric dentists that we consulted told me that they could see the cavities with the naked eye and only needed Xray's to view the extent of decay. Subsequent to Dr. Humphrey's expansive negligence, my 5yo daughter needed urgent oral surgery, requiring general anesthesia, 8 crowns and several fillings, amounting to $7,000+ worth of work. In addition, my younger child also had the beginnings of 4 cavities which were promptly and appropriately taken care of at our new dentist's office- 4 cavities that Dr. Humphrey did not find just two months prior. Once a child has a small amount of decay in their mouth it spreads like wildfire so you need an dentist who is thorough, discerning and proactive. Dr. John Humphrey is absent of any of these traits. Please take our traumatic experience and use it to guide you- don't leave your child's (or your own) mouth in the hands of KC Dental Works. I too thought I was doing the best thing, looking for a holistic dentist in Kansas City. But in doing so and trusting Dr. Humphrey, more damage has been caused than I could have ever imagined.

Two teeth that gave me no issue or pain but apparently needed crowns were tended too, after reading the other reviews here I fear I didn't even need them, but I can say it caused me more pain then any other dental work in my life including root canals. That is in both the month between visits and in the work itself. I was taking three rounds of tylenol a day most days just to sleep and function, all while not even using the right half of my mouth to chew. While that is all fairly annoying in itself, what really pissed me off enough to review is the treatment at the end. I was told I'd need two visits for my crown, the first of which they'd drill out the infection and measure for my temporaries, when I came in to be my second which was to be a one hour visit, they spent TWO hours screwing with my teeth before declaring that one of the temporaries they'd measured for/prepared/ and called me into install didn't fit. This mean two more weeks of pain and a third surprise visit! I was given no apology or discount for this extra trouble, despite being in enough pain to consider going in to an emergency dentist to have the tooth extracted. When I finally came in for the third visit they didn't numb me despite my first words on the subject being 'my last visit was excruciatingly painful, I'd be shocked if I didn't need numbing. When the visit was over I was then mocked and talked down to by the dentist checking me over for having the AUDACITY to scream twice in pain, before he literately skipped away down the hall. I've not felt so disrespected or dissatisfied by a medical provider even once in my life, don't come here.

Dentists and hygienists were awesome. Drs Alexander and Bevan retired a few years ago and things have totally changed. This practice is all about the money now and definitely not the personalized service that it once was. They insisted I needed a new bridge and we're incredibly high pressure about how I was going to pay the out of pocket portion. I have found another dentist who I'm very happy with and by the way there is nothing wrong with my bridge three to four years later.

But my most recent experience was so pleasantly memorable, I felt compelled to post a review. It was not just a routine cleaning, which have all been fine, but a replacement of old cavity fillings. First of all, I did not feel a THING when the novacaine injection was administered. I mean, seriously, I was sitting there wondering "did he inject the novacaine yet?" before I realized yes he had. And I'm kind of a baby about novacaine in the first place. Secondly, the whole procedure was done smoothly, with excellent teamwork between Dr. Alexander (I hope it's Dr. Alexander and that I'm getting his name right, he's great) and the technician (sorry, I don't remember her name but she's great too, very personable and professional). They had a good collaboration where she could anticipate what he needed next and when I needed to be suctioned, etc. It just went very smoothly. Felt no pain, and it was efficiently done. Thirdly, I needed no adjustment at all. Sometimes with these fillings, it can end up a little high, and your bite just isn't quite right. Nope, 24 hours later I don't even REMEMBER that I just had these fillings done. The bite was perfect on the first try. And you have what you need - tissues, cups, rinse, bing, bang boom, procedure done, you're on your way. Oh yeah, I forgot, you can even eat and drink RIGHT after the procedure is finished. And I did (sorry, I know I said I wouldn't when I was there but I did because I COULD) eat and drink shortly afterwards and had no problems at all. And the staff are great. They're nice to you when you arrive and good about scheduling and great about billing. They listen to you, pay attention, they just do a great job with customer service. I've left physicians practices solely based on the behavior of the office staff even if I like the physician. Not an issue with Olathe Famly Dentistry, they're great to work with. And they accept my dental insurance (MetLife Dental).

My second appt was a cleaning also with Dr. Jessup, I was happy with that as well, they were nice and informative. And I had zero pain during the cleaning. My third appt was to get some cavities filled by Dr Jessup, I had no issues with pain before the fillings but now am in a lot of pain and it's been 4 months since then. So I was not happy with that. I went in today for a cleaning from Dr Hutchinson, she was super kind and helpful on a plan to get my tooth to no longer hurt, she said that the filling I was given needed to be fixed and that should solve the pain. Overall I would definitely reccomend the office as the desk gals and hygienists are wonderful and so is Dr Hutchinson but I wouldn't reccomend seeing Dr Jessup. Also the location is kind of interesting to get to but once you've gone once it'll be a breeze to get to again. They do have a parking lot which I appreciate, and the office is very cozy and clean inside as well!
