I have put my dental care in the capable hands of Dr. Boland for nearly 20 years. Back when I was 18 years old, I woke up one morning feeling excruciating pain in one of my molars. I did not have a regular dentist at the time and found Dr. Boland through the referral of a friend who had been seeing him since childhood. Even though he'd never met me before, Dr. Boland made every effort to squeeze me in to an appointment ASAP. As it turned out, I needed a root canal . Dr. Boland did an excellent job and I've never thought of going to any other dentist since. Why? Because, not only is he incredibly knowledgeable about his profession and more than willing to answer any and every question his patients might have (I ask a LOT of questions), but he is also KIND and makes a remarkable effort to remember the little details about each and every person who comes into his office. I'm always amazed when he recalls little facts about my life and career that I might have mentioned at some point in time, even if it's been over a year since my last visit. Dr. Boland is not just professional and a master at dental wizardry, but he also excels at putting people at ease - which is VERY important when you have a drill in your mouth! He is attentive, personable, and always makes me feel like he genuinely cares. Furthermore, I never feel judged by him! I HATE flossing - with a passion. He never criticizes me for the fact that I do not floss regularly but, rather kindly, says "You know it's a good thing for you to do," and then follows that up with with some sort of compliment like, "but your gums look really healthy so whatever you're doing is working." In a world that teaches us to be super self-conscious and insecure when it comes to body and health matters, I've got to say that it feels really good to know that a visit to my dentist is not going to be an uncomfortable experience that leaves me with, yet another, complex about myself (or, at least, my dental hygiene). Plus he's a good dentist..as in, he has a gentle touch when it comes to the sharp objects that are used to scrape my teeth. No blood is drawn. BIG PLUS! :) Dr. Boland has also helped me prevent further damage to my teeth by catching the formation of a cyst in the root of a molar via an X-Ray BEFORE it created irreparable damage eroding my surrounding teeth and jaw bone. For those who are unfamiliar, it is REALLY HARD to see soft tissue abnormalities in x-rays. Like I said before, he's a dental wizard! I truly cannot recommend Dr. Boland highly enough. Dr. B is definitely the best dentist that I have been to in the Bay Area, no doubt in my mind. I have been to eight different dentists in the last five years. Won't go elsewhere ever again. He is down to earth and very honest about what needs to be done and how quickly. He also does almost everything himself, there aren't hygienists doing everything but the exam. Nothing against hygienists, I just love that he does this. He is simply the best. read more

I can't believe the negative reviews either. We moved from Marin County to Chicago two years ago but still come to Dr. Boland! My son is a "difficult" patient in that he is really hesitant to open his mouth and Dr. Boland and his incredible staff go the extra mile to make him feel secure. The front staff are great at working with our scheduling limitations. I usually do not call them until right before we get to town and they always find a way to work with me. Dr. Boland is really kind and gentle and makes my son feel totally safe. They have TV's on the ceiling to help the kids forget where they are and one of the prettiest views in the area from the large picture windows. He explains to me and my son (age 5) why it is important to brush, offers tips on flossing and talks about preventive care in a easy to understand manner. Our Pediatrician recommended him and I have been extremely happy. I would not hesitate to recommend. On our last visit we saw the other Dr. Boland in the office (not usually the pediatric Doctor) and he too was great. The front staff managed to work us in with him because we were in town during a time when our Dr. Boland was on vacation. We were impressed that they were willing to accommodate us and found this Doctor to also be very understanding to a young (nervous) patient. read more

Dr. Boland is my best dentist ever. He's the first dentist who didn't hurt me when inserting the X-ray wings. When I mentioned this, he told me that I have a Neanderthal shelf, and so he maneuvered around it. Who knew I had a shelf? Who knew X-ray wings didn't have to hurt? I've been going to Dr. Boland since I was a kid and I'm now 25. He is a great dentist but more importantly he is very personable and a great guy. He's the only physician I feel that I've had a lasting relationship with. He remembers things about me and always has good conversations to offer. You can't go wrong being in his care. Nice guy....but his wife is at the front desk. She may seem nice at first but watch out! She can lash out at the first missed appt. Also, my daughter evidently needed orthodontist work and no word was mentioned until I brought it up. Isn't the dentist supposed to do that? Hmmm, makes ya wonder. read more

Dr Boland III is the only dentist I trust...Dont believe the negative reviews. I've been going to him for the past 5 years and every time I come, he is polite and we chat about life, he's great. He is an excellent dentist and has done some breakthrough services for me. Elizabeth on the front desk is just as warm and friendly and is very flexible regarding rates and payment. The two assistants are very very good at what they do and the whole atmosphere is very pleasant. I am one of those people who dread going to the dentists...that is before I discovered Dr Boland. Thank you to my doctor who recommended Dr Boland in the first place. The rates are competetive and you get everything that you ask for, if not more. We first met Dr. Boland at the San Rafael clinic, where he volunteers on Fridays (that says a lot right there) and now we belong to his practice in C.M. My oldest daughter, 9, has had great difficulties going to the dentist and she immediately warmed up to Dr. Boland. He is compassionate and encouraging, yet firm. When my daughter had a tooth extracted she felt no pain and actually is excited to go to the dentist now. This is a huge breakthrough for us. He has explained every procedure to me in a straight-forward manner, which I greatly appreciate. My children love Dr Boland. They reminded me they are due for a check up! As a child I hated going to the dentist and love that I found a dentist for my children who they look forward to seeing without any fear. One of my children had to have a tooth extracted shortly after joining Dr Bolands practice and she still likes to go. My 5yr old just told me he wants to go to the dentist because he likes the buzzy thing that tickles his gums. Dr boland will tell you what you're not doing well with your childrens' teeth but will also teach you How to do it right. The staff in the office is wonderful too and always pleasant. They talk to my children on their level and explain everything to them. They also teach them how important it is for them to take care of their teeth. They even know me when I meet them on the street. Dr Bolands wife has always be a pleasure to talk to and has always worked with me to make appointment times work for my 4 children at the same time and any one with more than one child knows how great it is to just make on trip. I was surprised to see a negative review so I looked at other reviews by Duke L and they're all negative. If I were running a dental practice I wouldn't be happy if someone missed their appointment either. Those slots could be fill with someone who need to be seen on a more urgent matter. a simple phone call to say sorry I can't make my appointment allows other patients to be seen. It's hard for me to read the negative reviews on the two most passionate and great dentist. My 10 year old daughter loves her "Dr. Boland" and was sad when he retired. She have been his patient since she was two and she always look forward to her semi annual checkup. But she is also happy with her "new Dr. Boland" too. Both my husband and I have Dr. Boland and we have been with him for more than 10 years. Dr. Boland always explained all of the pros and cons to us before any procedures that my husband and I might need. The assistants and front desk (Elizabeth) is great and always makes us feel welcome. They always work with us on payment schedules and never pressure us if we can't pay the whole amount. Wish the office is closer to my home but will drive the 70 miles each time. read more

Dr. Boland Sr. (the Pediatric Dentist) Is truly gifted. We were so blessed to find him 5 years ago, and he has treated all 3 of my children! He is the warmest, friendliest, patient Dentist you will ever come across. I am shocked at the negative review as well. He is extremely thorough at what he does and has a calming effect on nervous children (and parents!). I just can't say enough about him, his staff, his wife Elizabeth is the backbone of the practice. It is so not her personality to "lash out" over a missed appointment, however, they have a business to run and if you are not going to be able to keep your appointment for whatever reason, it is your responsibility to call ahead and re-schedule. She is known to be highly accommodating and calls every client the day before to confirm appointments. read more

Both our girls have been coming to this practice since they were 6 months old. They are now 13 and 15. We go every six months like clockwork. If there is an issue we get on their books pronto. Life gets busy but we have rarely missed an apt. They are wonderful about making adjustments, working with what ever is troubling us, keeping things private, working with the girls over the stages of life with regards to brushing and oral management. Dr. Boland has a Scientific background must more powerful for us when we were interviewing DDS for our girls. We wanted someone who really knew fully what the heck they were doing. GO! I have been going to the Dr. Bolands since I was two. I get compliments on my teeth and smile all the time and I know it is large part due to their guidance. Dr. Boland instilled in me a great fondness for oral hygiene. Could the prize bucket bribing be part of that? Who cares? I always loved going to the dentist and I doubt many kids walk away with that experience from their dentist. He made my one dental emergency a non-scary event when he seamlessly fixed the permanent front tooth that I cracked in half at 8. At 16, I was handed over to his son, who has been my dentist ever since. I've been impressed that they manage scheduling, so that as an adult I don't feel odd going to an office that doubles as a pediatric dental practice. I'd heartily recommend the elder Dr. Boland as a fantastic pediatric dentist and his son as an excellent adult dentist. read more

Wow, I couldn't believe the negatives written here. I have two sons who have had a very positive first experience of dentistry with Dr. Boland. It is true that he is a little patronizing with the parents, but I have found him to be very knowledgable and experienced. And, on the other hand, he is EXTREMELY complimentary and gentle to his little patients. Both of my sons have had more than just cleanings and have left quite happy. He is tolerant of parents sitting with their children, and he has given many helpful hints for cavity fighting. So far, I am very happy with his services. read more

Came highly recommended BUT had a terrible experience with my 6 year old daughter who broke her 2 front adult teeth in a scooter accident the night before 1st day of school. He did not return an emergency call for over 12 hours. We went in today and he said he was too busy to do the procedure. We asked if there was anyway to work her in and he agreed to see her at 3:30. Once there he showed no compassion, started immediately with no explanation or comforting to my daughter which freaked her out a little. He immediately said "I'm not doing this today, she will have to wait until Monday and got up". I said let me talk to her -- she was not crying or hysterical. She said "I got water shot up my nose!". His response was " You can talk to her all you want but I'm not "working" on her until Monday" and walked out. My daughter was saying "Why can't I get my teeth fixed?" . Totally inappropriate behavior, how can any man much less a pediatric dentist do such a thing. BE AWARE OF THIS MAN!!!! This was a traumatizing experience for the whole family in a time which we needed someone. There are better dentists out there than this man! read more

Dr. Boland has been my dentist since I was 2 years old. Now I'm in my 20s, and Dr. Boland happily continues to treat me and has never suggested I move on to an adult dentist. When I was 6 he installed a discreet behind-the-teeth permanent spacing retainer to make room for my adult teeth, which would have run into each other and twisted or overlapped to fit. The retainer was removed when I was 10 years and I have perfect teeth. I mean the kind of teeth that strangers frequently compliment me on. No one can believe I never had to have braces, and that is due to the excellent work of Dr. Boland. I actually enjoyed going to the dentist when I was a kid because he was so kind. Well, perhaps mostly because there are TVs in the ceiling and a prize basket you get to pick out of when you're done. Even now that I'm an adult and I no longer get a prize, I continue to enjoy seeing Dr. Boland, who remembers everything about me and is always thorough and kind, and takes great care of my teeth. read more
