Mini water fall
Charlynn R.

This trail has become our easy go to place for when we need some fresh air. The trails are very easy with several loops. We've even done our engagement photos here way back when! The scenery is simple yet really beautiful.

This has been a go to pandemic staple in recent months when we need to get out and get some fresh air. The Lockport nature trail is well maintained, short, and relatively flat. In my opinion this is a perfect place for beginners to start or more experienced hikers to head out to if you want to stretch the legs and do a quick mile+ walk in nature. With the longest trail only about a 1.5 mile circle, and multiple trails you can choose your own path. The nice part is that you never have to worry about getting lost, as all trails lead back to the same open field.

A nice and well maintained trail that is more like a park, than a hiking trail at parts. That being said, it shows that there is a lot of love that goes in to keeping it as nice as it is. This is the busiest of the 3 nature trails in Lockport and for good reason. It has a variety of trails, a waterfall, some old growth trees, wildlife sightings are relatively common, it has some small hills to keep it interesting and has great shade coverage throughout. Flip some rocks in the stream with your kids an look for some cray fish. Bring a flower or tree guide and appreciate all this park has to offer. Set up a blanket in the field and have a picnic. Above all else, take your trash with you(and maybe someone else's) and keep this place as nice as it is.

Lovely shale waterfall!

This is very well maintained and easy trail with a few loops options and cut-throughs--be sure to keep a map if you want to wander between the trails. I would highly recommend it for families or those looking to get out of "city life." There's a shallow but lush shale waterfall along the creek and easy stepping stones if you want to dip your hands or feet in it. These trails are in a wonderful green forest with tons of trees and shade. I didn't find any muddy spots, but I don't remember it being very rainy around the time either. My husband and I took a stroll back in June and saw very few people, but we found lots of wonderful birds to add to our recent birding hobby. Favorites included American Redstarts, Hooded Warblers, an Indigo Bunting, and a Kestrel. It's a nice spot to fill your outdoorsy spirit!

The 250 year old oak tree is part of the second path from the top.

What a beautiful, underrated gem of a park. Sure, the waterfall isn't as impressive as Royalton Ravine, but there's several well maintained paths to explore and lots of wildlife to see. You can see a 180 year old oak tree on the way to the waterfall, and a 250 year old oak tree further down the main path. There were a lot of frogs, snakes, squirrels and chipmunks. There also seemed to be a fair amount of poison ivy in places so take care and stick to the path. I did see a couple pieces of trash, which always bums me out. We're lucky to have beautiful places like this to enjoy, but litter takes away from the beauty. Parts of the trails have gravel, and there's several benches if you need to take a break. Update: there's another tree that looks to be at least 200 years old on an early side path to the left that meets up with the main waterfall path.

If you are looking for a relatively easy, well marked trail to take kids and dogs, this is perfect. This is one of the trails mentioned on several Buffalo "Dog Friendly" trail lists, and it did not disappoint. There are bags available should nature call for your pup pal on the trail and you forgot your own. We have been here twice, and all of the dog owners we saw were respectful in keeping their pets on leashes and sharing space on the trail. My dog would probably insist I mention that she was able to jump after (and quickly back away from) so many garter snakes this Spring, and found one unidentified animal vertebrae, so really a top experience if your basics needs are chasing and chewing stuff. The kids love this trail too- creeks to step in, a "waterfall" in the sense that there is water falling about three feet. Niagara Falls, it is not. You don't have to do an "out and back" (at least for the back half of the trails) so the loop keeps them from getting bored. Also has at least two trees that will make a teenager look up and say hey, that's a big ass tree.

I live in West Seneca so I really had no clue this place existed. I decided to spend my day off outside and I'm so glad we found Lockport Nature Trail! The trail was easy to follow and it connects in a full oval back to the parking lot. The entire trail was mostly in the shade so this is perfect for those extremely hot summer days. We will definitely be returning!

Great hike on a beautiful fall day. It is an easy 1-2 mile trail. I would say it is approx a little over a mile hike there and back if you are only looking to go to the waterfall. If you are looking for a longer hike, trying to take all of the various paths and you could probably hit 3 miles. When you get there I would suggestions taking a photo of the map with your phone, it always helps to have a map on your hike. Another trick is to open a fitness app that tracks your hike on a gbs map. Do not let the various paths overwhelm you the trails are marked and all of the paths will bring you back around to the main path so you can't get lost for long. The scenery is beautiful and you can't help but want to take will let the pictures speak for themselves.

This is a great quiet little place. We come here a lot with our 2 Greyhounds and our 3 children. It's very safe, shaded and not too strenuous. To walk along the water is divine on a hot day! Lots to see and nice and spaced out so you aren't right next to other people enjoying the area. I would recommend for pets and children alike!

Fun hike, the trail was muddy but we were prepared. The map was helpful in getting to the waterfall and for finding our way back to the car. Not a ton of hills but still a scenic trail hike!

Kelli D.

It's a small park, which is great for my pug because he is out of shape, lazy (as most pugs are), and cannot handle extra long walks. There's a ton of benches, it's fairly clean, and the path is safe and clear. The waterfall is small but not everything is about size, right? Overall the park is cool for a quick little walk. My main issue with the park are the bugs! It's nature and outdoors with water so clearly there are going to be bugs but it seems like there's more here than other places. I hate them. I hate spending my time swatting at my head when I could be taking in the scenery.

Love this trail! I have four kids under 11 and visit here often. It's an easy trail for them and we always find something new! It's a great place to get outdoors, well maintained and easy kid & dog friendly hike.

But let me emphasize the "wilderness" part of the trail name; it's not as well maintained as some hiking trails you'll find in WNY. From the start, it was clear this was a hidden secret of the area. With no parking lots at the trailhead, parking was limited to a small cleared area alongside the road. This space was only large enough for about three vehicles. Getting into the woods, the ground was uneven and rocky, and any trail markings became lost or confusing. Trails were overgrown with tall foliage, and poison ivy and poison oak encroaching and often crossing the trails. This said, however, the well-constructed benches, the bridges, and numerous signs about the local wildlife did demonstrate that this trail had at one point been lovingly built. Be prepared. Wear appropriate footwear. Mind where you step. And keep an eye on the brook so you know which trails to follow. It is not a difficult hike, but it is more rough than was expected. Mostly due to the need for maintenance on a few of the supposedly marked trails.

It's not a difficult walk, but it's not flat. There's a long rickety bridge over the creek, secure enough to feel safe but bouncy enough for a small thrill. To the left of the waterfall is a small clearing and ledge for a great shot of the waterfall or you can walk down a few steps to the right and find a place to sit and rest or eat a small picnic lunch. Midway between the bridge and waterfall is the ruins of an old historic homestead. We were only there for about an hour including a ten minute break at the waterfall so it's not a long hike, but there's smaller paths here or there that veer off of the main path. Leashed pets are allowed. There were geese around the pond, but I didn't have a hard time avoiding their waste. I was sad to see a couple of beer cans on our hike, but aside from passing a handful of other people, I felt fully immersed in beauty and nature. 6/12/15 Update: Visited again on a whim today after a week of heavy rain. There's that mud everybody was talking about. Still enjoyed myself and saw lots of wildlife: garter snakes, frogs, chipmunks, squirrels and a bright yellow bird. Love this place!

I chose Four Mile Creek State Park for its proximity to the Falls, and nearby attractions like Fort Niagara, an Aquarium, the Niagara Power Vista, and the Underground Railroad Heritage Center, to name a few. This camp offers a shuttle service to these places, no need to worry about parking! I was welcomed by a cheerful office staff and given a map for the Niagara Falls State Park. I went to my site 13, it was nicely shaded and I had access to 30amp service and water a few sites away. The bathrooms & showers were clean and had access to washer/dryer. I met lots of nice people and the weather was great. (6/1 to 6/8) Every member of staff I encountered was friendly and accommodating. Shout out to maintenance staff, Mike, the shuttle driver and Tim, manning the Camp Store. In fact, Tim even circulates the campground every night after the store is closed with ice & firewood. I visited the Falls, walking all over the American side then walked across the bridge to Canada for lunch observing the Canadian side of the Falls. But my favorite thing about this whole journey was the sunsets on Lake Ontario. On clear nights, the city of Toronto is visible. Every night campers would drift down to the field on the lake to watch the sunset. It was the most mesmerizing thing, many different people connecting with this beautiful world.

When we pulled in and saw a mostly full parking lot we got a bit concerned, but as soon as you're 5 minutes into the woods there's more open space and options than anywhere else I've been in the area. Based on my knowledge, the type of "hike" is most similar to what you'd find at Chestnut Ridge/Eternal Flame, but a bit less maintained/more natural. The atmosphere reminded me a lot of hiking and camping adventures in the southern tier. Some areas of the trails have a decent amount of gravel, but mostly it's just a woodsy trail with many branching paths. The areas between trails are relatively cleared out too so you can choose to do trails or just walk through the woods. There's lots of elevation change and ravines, depending on where you choose to walk, so that keeps things interesting (though a little tricky in areas that are both steep and muddy). The giant creek down at the bottom is beautiful, can definitely wade a bit and explore all the little pools. Definitely family friendly with all of the trail options, and our dog was really happy to walk through the woods with us. We only spent about an hour and a half to get home in time for dinner, but now that I have a better idea of the scope of things I'm excited to go back for a whole day and do lots of woodsy exploring throughout the park. I also can't wait to visit during the different seasons to see how the scenery changes, I'm sure it'll be gorgeous and lush in a month or two!
