But let me emphasize the "wilderness" part of the trail name; it's not as well maintained as some hiking trails you'll find in WNY. From the start, it was clear this was a hidden secret of the area. With no parking lots at the trailhead, parking was limited to a small cleared area alongside the road. This space was only large enough for about three vehicles. Getting into the woods, the ground was uneven and rocky, and any trail markings became lost or confusing. Trails were overgrown with tall foliage, and poison ivy and poison oak encroaching and often crossing the trails. This said, however, the well-constructed benches, the bridges, and numerous signs about the local wildlife did demonstrate that this trail had at one point been lovingly built. Be prepared. Wear appropriate footwear. Mind where you step. And keep an eye on the brook so you know which trails to follow. It is not a difficult hike, but it is more rough than was expected. Mostly due to the need for maintenance on a few of the supposedly marked trails.

There is a nice, clean restroom building as well as pavilions for rental and a pond for fishing. Semi-recently a disc golf course was added, which I'm not a fan of because they cut down a decent amount of the front part of woods and it takes away from the experience in nature. But, I suppose it's a good way to bring more people to the park. The hiking trails can be a bit rooty, rocky and muddy in parts, so best to pay attention to your footing. I don't mind it because it makes the hike more challenging. There are up and down hills as well as a suspension bridge. The trails are marked with different colors. I also like that it's not easy to get lost here since I have a pretty bad sense of direction. Also, I've seen birds, deer, chipmunks, squirrels and snakes here. Whether you want to have a picnic by the pond, get a good hike in or both, Royalton Ravine is a nice setting for it!

I found this place after doing a little bit of research, and I was not disappointed. The trail is a bit bumpy, unpaved, and difficult to go through. I personally love good trails and hikes, so it doesn't bother me. But i'll recommend wearing good running shoes with strong grip. As you're going through the trail, take it slow and easy so you don't slip on any unstable wood or rocks. You first go down a large staircase from the area I went through, then a 15 minute path. Once we reached the water, I was in awe. The water is bright blue, clean, the trees are as green as they can get, and the breeze is beautiful. The wind was blowing, which was refreshing after a sweaty trail walk. The views were unbelievable, including falls further away. I couldn't even believe it was in the Niagara area. If you're looking for a short trail and stunning views that transport you out of the city, this is the place to visit!! I will definitely be back and try different pathways :)

This is such a beautiful park to enjoy a nice walk, jog, a bike ride or to go fishing (no spots to play sports of any kind here). There are a couple small grassy areas you can sit with a blanket and have a small picnic, eat lunch or bring your own lawn chair and enjoy a book. Plenty of benches to sit down, relax and enjoy the view of the water. In addition, the trees provide lots of shaded areas to appreciate as you walk through the paved trail on a hot summer day. Lastly, there are a lot of droppings from the geese (the children were stressing about avoiding it). I didn't see a playground during my walk but there is a very nice playground available for the children in front of the library that is located adjacent to the park entrance - you'll see it. I used my GPS to get here and parked at the courthouse parking lot, there was a path to where the trail starts - in my photos. Bring bug spray and sunblock in the summer and enjoy a stroll after a good meal. Rated this park four stars because I would probably only come back to take a walk if I'm already in the area but there's nothing here you absolutely have to see if you were visiting Buffalo. However, the park is beautiful and serene. If there was more to do or picnic tables for families to sit and eat, I would give it five stars.

Interesting facts learned on fireflies: they like leafy dark areas, eat slugs, and snails and really lite up the park. They are able bodied but not fit so I had no idea what to expect. I feel like a lot of the reviews I could find through Yelp, Facebook, Reddit and all trails were very mixed. A lot of people saying it's easy, my kids can do it, current conditions are not very icy, you don't need spikes, etc. and then a lot of it's a moderate hike, if you can't easily walk up 100 stairs you should not do it, very slippery, wear spikes, etc. We all survived. Some of us slipped a little on the icy areas, one fell a few times but no injuries. There are a lot of railings and tree bark to hold onto near the icy or technical areas. I would recommend spikes if it's icy to get a better grip. My son and I are probably beginner to intermediate hikers. For us this was a moderate hike. For an avid hiker this would be an easy hike. Strictly talking in icy, wet, snowy conditions. During dry weather I assume it's much easier. Still very doable if you are not super active as my parents are not. It was a really cool sight at the end and very beautiful scenery with all the snow. We actually had a great time and I was really worried about not being prepared enough and someone getting hurt which wasn't the case thankfully

This beautiful park was the location for the Niagara Celtic Festival for many years and it was the perfect spot for bagpipes echoing over the lake. It was magical
