    Serenity now. :-)

Last weekend we took a drive to Hobuck Flats to check out the hiking and fishing, as we had not been here before. Here is how I came to a respectable 3-star rating: ** Hiking - 3 Stars: Parking is next to a walking bridge that goes across 18 Mile Creek. On the other side you can go straight to a trail that runs along the creek to the waterfall. It is fairly narrow. You cannot move much to either side because you're on a hill or in the creek. It was fairly crowded the day we were there, and this was not ideal for social distancing. The trail splits shortly down the creek to go to either the top or the bottom of the waterfall. I did not go to the bottom of the waterfall, as that part of the trail was even more narrow and there were too many people. I did climb the hill to the top of the waterfall, which was a short five minute walk. From the top, you cannot see much of the falls, the real view is from the bottom. As far as I can tell, the trail ends at the falls but I did not get to explore as much as I'd have liked to know for sure. ** Fishing - 4 Stars: When you cross the bridge, you can also go left, down under the bridge to a rocky area along the creek. On a typical day, there would be enough room down here to spread out and fish all along this side of the creek. But again, it was more crowded than nature usually tends to be. The creek was muddy this day after a lot of rain, so not many folks were pulling out fish. But when the weather stays nice and the creek settles, it is probably more flush with fish. ** Parking - 2 Stars: The road is windy, narrow and somewhat steep down to the parking area. The lot can accommodate about ten cars. It was full when we got down there, but luckily someone was just leaving and we could squeak by to grab the spot. Others who were not so lucky parked along the steep, windy road. It might be hard to maneuver a larger vehicle down there when it is full. So parking can be a tricky here. So 3 stars it is. The trails were short, there are no bathrooms, no tables or picnic areas either, and the parking is crammed when busy. But there are still positives here, like a beautiful waterfall (which I would like to see better someday when it is less crowded), decent fishing potential (we ventured off the path and found some spots we'd like to try again), and pretty decent bird watching (lots of blue jays!). Overall it was nice enough at Houbuck that we'll be back again soon to relax creekside, and hopefully snag a few fishies.

Beautiful little area, went for a nice walk through the woods with the girly, very peaceful, and the falls are pleasant to see!

It's a beautiful location. Nice and private dogs. Love it. And I would go by myself and spend the whole entire day there. Relaxing. I have nothing bad to say about the place the way it was. Like I said, I'm looking forward to coming there very very soon and I will post what I think

Such a let down after they renovated it for 2 years…read more I used to love sitting at a table in the shade with my book and watch my family bring our dogs down there to play and now I can't even do that because the tables and chairs are gone and they build up the rock wall around the beach. The beach is still inaccessible there are giant cement blocks so it's not a straight shot down for a wheelchair and the grass around them is very uneven and hilly like ground for a wheelchair to go over and I got stuck in the rocks and had to ask people to help push me out, then on the way back to the walk way (video I posted) my wheelchair was going to flip. There are small simple things that they could have been done, I've been to other beach's that have strips over the sand/ rocks that wheelchairs can ride over. The building looks nice they added a small golf course. To me it seems like all they did was build the restaurant and build up the rock walls especially around the beach.

And as a bonus it was free, and better than all the tourist attractions we paid for. We came on a weekday morning and from the parking lot we took the Niagra Gorge Rim trail down to the Whirlpool trail. The view from the rim is gorgeous. The hike down is challenging, lots of stairs but very scenic and worth it. There's lots of greenery, views of the water and some shade. At the base there are rock benches where you can rest. We were pleasantly surprised to find the trail took us directly down to the water. We took a break on a large rock and even dipped our feet in the water. You can't swim here- there's fast moving water, but it's a peaceful place to relax. We had the place to ourselves and relaxed for about 30 minutes. We watched as the Aero Car went back and forth above on the Canada side and eventually a Jet boat came through and disturbed our serenity, splashing waves against the rocks. We retraced our steps back up the steep stairway trail. We only passed about 3 people during our entire hike. This is a hidden gem. There's a not very clean porta potty in the parking lot and the trail is dog-friendly. Lots of parking is available.
