There were other offices who recommended more expensive/unnecessary treatment and Dr. Schabel was able to assess and determine that those were not needed for me, saving me thousands of dollars. -Payment options were clear and they had so many different options for different budgets. -I was quoted 14 weeks for my Invisalign and that's exactly what it took to fix my teeth. I know that's not always the case, but I'm so happy with how things turned out. -Kayla, one of the office managers, was amazing and really was so enjoyable to work with. I decided to get braces as part of a longer treatment plan to properly align my teeth in preparation for future dental work. At first, everything seemed fine. I did break one bracket during treatment and paid for it without any issue. The main problem started after my braces were removed. I was given a removable retainer (the bulky, mouth-guard-style type). While the doctor was testing it in the office, I immediately mentioned that I was feeling an uncomfortable, almost shocking sensation. The upper retainer collected a large amount of saliva and created a strong choking feeling. It pressed in a way that made swallowing difficult, with saliva pooling between the retainer and the roof of my mouth, making me feel like I could choke. I was told that I just needed to get used to it. At home, I tried wearing it again, but the choking sensation was so intense that I had to remove it immediately. I tried again the following day with the same result. I eventually stopped trying because I was genuinely afraid of choking. I contacted the office and was given an appointment about a week to ten days later. When I explained the situation to Dr. Amer, his response was simply that he had fitted it himself. I clarified that while the wire may have been adjusted, the issue was with the size and shape of the upper portion and how it fit my mouth. Instead of attempting to adjust or modify the existing retainer, I was told that switching to a clear retainer would cost $700. When I asked if the current retainer could be trimmed or adjusted to fit safely, I was told that would also cost $700. By that time, my teeth had already started shifting because I had been unable to wear the retainer due to safety concerns. Despite this, there was no effort made to address the shifting or to find a solution that would allow me to continue my treatment safely. Overall, I felt my concerns were dismissed and my treatment goals were overlooked. What began as a necessary step in my dental plan ultimately turned into a waste of time and money. I ultimately decided not to proceed with paying for a new retainer, even though a payment plan was offered, as I had already invested significantly in the treatment and did not feel it was reasonable to pay again to correct an issue that prevented me from wearing the original retainer.

In order to do this, I needed to do a full initial intake appointment in which they told me I have gingivitis and highly recommended I do their intensive cleaning procedure and pressured me to start that same day. I told them that I am low income and on medi-cal and if they take insurance or if I should find someone else. They basically told me that dental insurance is a scam and I should stick with them. They charge WAY more than even the average dentist. I later found out that Dientes in Santa Cruz takes medi-cal and Cabrillo Hygiene Clinic also offers very cheap cleaning. When I went to Cabrillo for cleaning a couple years later, the Dr/Instructor there said the X-rays I got here were done incorrectly and were not acceptable. Luckily they were able to re do them for cheap. Although it is on me to find the right dental care for my insurance, I came for a different issue and didn't appreciate being pressured to choose them for the cleaning and lied to. I had to use all my savings to cover the costs. Also, although I initially came for the tongue tie release, they were only able to do half. When i inquired about coming back for the second half release as originally planned, the doctor said I couldn't do it because I needed to be able to fully lift my tongue on my own, even though the whole issue of why I need the release is that I can't. The doctor at cabrillo said this was rediculous, and that there are definitely doctors who could do the full release as is. Overall, while the staff may seem nice at first, it seems clear they are trying to make as much money as possible without caring about the clients needs, and the more money you spend here does not mean better care.

Twice now, in less than a year, my daughter came home with all her brackets removed and a "command" to go see our dentist to have her teeth cleaned within the next 2 weeks. They didn't care in the least to share their concerns, explain their reasons and check with us if it was possible for us, in terms of insurance, time... before removing her brackets and forcing us to go to the dentist (and our dentist never really understood what the emergency was). If a parent is not present, they'll always set appointments during school time. You'd rather not have a full-time job and send your kid there on their own, they'll end up missing school every single time. They are rude and disrespectful to kids, don't explain what they do and why, reproach kids for not bringing back paperwork that they never gave in the first place.... I can't wait for my daughter's treatment to be over so that I never have to go back to that place.
