We cannot recommend Johanna's Catering enough! The food at our wedding was absolutely incredible--so much so that countless guests told us it was the best wedding food they've ever had. We opted for the heavy hors d'oeuvres and the duet plate dinner, and every dish was exceptional. The seared beef with demi-glace sauce was cooked perfectly and received endless compliments along with the local caught fish! Also, the potato pave is a must as a side! As the bride and groom we added crab cakes to our plate and they were amazing. We used Johanna's bartenders, who were wonderful, and later in the evening, Espresso Martinis were served, which our guests absolutely loved. The staff was amazing--they served all the food and even handled cleanup seamlessly. Johanna herself was wonderful; we scheduled a tasting before the wedding, and she was incredibly helpful, friendly, and attentive. Her service is truly top-notch. If you're planning any event, especially a wedding, Johanna's Catering is the one to go with. Highly, highly recommend! read more

Unfortunately updating my original 5 star review. I order a cheesecake from cafe lacchine/Johanna's every year for birthdays. This year was such a disappointment. The cake was not properly prepared, and without confirming they added a vanilla frosting to the top(??). We specifically requested a plain cheesecake with solely a 'happy birthday' on the top. After immediately taking the cake from the fridge, the center of the cake was a complete custard/liquid. It was over cooked on the crust and undercooked throughout the entire cake. Next time we will be ordering elsewhere. Such a shame since we drove out of our way to give them our business. See photos for an example of the quality we received. read more

I am so conflicted about this new relocated place. First of all, make no mistake, this is not just a relocation of Cafe Lachine. Gone is the shrimp and grits. Gone is the crabby Benedict. Makes me sad... No breakfast at all, and no table service either. The setup is confusing. When you walk in, there is a little stand to your right with one-sheet paper menus and a couple of coolers. Beyond them is a table with soup kettles and an entrance to a dining room with several big round tables. Beyond that, staight ahead and facing you is a counter with a person. In my case, the person hollers, "grab a menu". So I do, and walk to the counter. There is a specials board with sandwich specials. I decide to get the Super Bowl from the paper menu and my husband wants the fig salad. We are sent back to the coolers at the entrance to get a tray, the salads, tubs of dressing and beverages, and then to the soup stand where we find utensils and napkins. Plastic clamshells of food, and plastic utensils. The food was fine. The dining room had a few other diners, and more came while we were eating. My husband loved his fig salad, and liked the new place better than I. I'm trying to figure out why this is better than the old location and the old fantastic breakfast/lunch place that Cafe Lachine was in Nags Head. Maybe their focus now is catering? Bakery orders? As a tourist, neither of those are for me really. I'm mourning table service, real plates and silverware, and that fantastic crabby benedict that I so looked forward to. read more

I came with a party of 8 and we almost left because we were told it may be a 30-45 minute wait, but luckily a couple parties got up and we could be seated sooner than that. I am SO GLAD that we stayed! The food was amazing, and presentation was beautiful. I'm not much of a breakfast person, so that's saying a lot! What I tasted: Eggs Benedict with Crabcake ($12) Biscuits & Gravy ($9) Chicken Biscuit with Cheddar & Bacon ($7) Stuffed French Toast ($11) You can get the Eggs Benedict with either black forest ham or crabcake for an additional $2, and it comes with a side of roasted potatoes. This was actually my first time to ever have Eggs Benedict; I opted for the crabcake & loved it! The egg was perfectly poached. Hollandaise sauce was creamy, tangy, and savory all at the same time. The crabcake was delicious. The Eggs Benedict is a breakfast special only available until 11:30 am, but they have a crabcake breakfast sandwich that is served all day. Biscuits & Gravy is a very simple dish, but theirs were really good! I had a bite and really liked it. This comes with a side as well. My brother got sausage with his. The chicken biscuit was just okay to me. I don't care much for chicken biscuits in the first place, though. My girlfriend, who is a huge fan of Chik-fil-A chicken biscuits, said it was pretty average. She mentioned that it was filling, but would probably order something else next time. The best thing I tried was the Stuffed French Toast. YUM!!! Get this and you will not be disappointed! Cafe Lachnie would get extra stars from me if I could assign them, but since I can't I will instead leave a review to help you decide on your next meal. The location is in a quaint shopping center, parking is limited in front of the establishment, so get there early if you want to get a slot. When you enter into the establishment, you are immediately greeted by the staff with a smile and a hearty "Good Morning" which is a positive. We visited this place twice in one week, which gives me a better sense of what offerings that they have on the menu and also allows me an opportunity to see if the wait staff are consistent. On my first visit I ordered coffee with cream served on the side. The coffee was excellent and we came to find out that it was locally roasted by a place called Morning View Coffee House & Roaster. It was a nice touch to have the individual pitcher of cream to go along with your cup of not so average Joe. The main consisted of the Eggs Benedict with Crabcake served on Brioche accompanied by the Breakfast Fingerling Potatoes with Sauteed Onions along with a side of Applewood Smoked Bacon. The crabcake was all crab with little if any sign of filler other than the amount needed to bind it all together. The poached egg was prepared perfectly and came with just the correct amount of hollandaise sauce so as not to be swimming in it. The best surprise was the breakfast fingerling potatoes which beats out the traditional potato hash that would come from every other greasy spoon cafe out there. The entire dish had the correct amount of seasonings and was very well balanced. I appreciate the fact that the chef paid close attention to the plating of the dish as it is a feast for the eyes and my belly. The second breakfast visit consisted of the Chive Biscuit and Sausage Gravy with a side of Applewood Smoked Bacon. The bacon on both occasions came out perfectly crisp and not over done. The chive biscuit really sets this biscuit and gravy combination head and shoulders above all others I have tried.The biscuits were light and fluffy, with the chives adding a nice complementary flavor to the sausage gravy. The portion size of this dish is very generous so bring your appetite if you expect to finish it off. I saved the best for last. The wait staff were very sweet and helpful; we were waited on by Johanna Lachine on our first visit. I am always a fan of businesses where you have visibility to the owner. The others who had helped along the way were also very quick to make sure our coffee or water was topped up and that the food came out as expected. Customer service, especially in the food service industry is a dying art for some places, but definitely not in this place. Parting thoughts: If you want a change of pace and are looking to get a nice start for you morning before hitting the beaches of the OBX, make your way to Cafe Lachine, you won't be disappointed. read more

This is a delicious cafe! I ordered the crabcake sandwich on the herby bread with sweet potato fries and was not let down. Like other reviewers have stated, the crab cake contains a lot of meat and barely if any fillers. My boyfriend ordered the Reuben with french fries and loved it. The employees are all very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is nice with a lot of cool blues all over. We'll definitely be back with our next visit to OBX! My waitress was very sweet and friendly though, so I forgive them for my initial experience. I ordered a latte and biscuits and gravy. The biscuits and gravy consists of four huge biscuits and a choice of side. I chose grits but in retrospect I wouldn't order this combination again as it was too rich. First off let me say that everything about this place was five stars. If you're a foodie, you have to check this place out. The shrimp Po boy was by far the best I've had on the beach. The grits with tasso were seasoned perfectly, and were the most delicious grits I've ever had. The only problem with the ho ho that I got, was that I wanted more. The staff inside could not of been nicer, more accommodating and welcoming to a couple of Tourists like us. We really loved this little spot on the Outer Banks! Really great staff and very accommodating to food allergies, gluten intolerance, etc. we grabbed to go and had a beach picnic. Portions were large; I got a chicken sandwich that was good but I would probably try something different next time. My husband got a chicken biscuit that he said was really great. The key lime pie tartlet he got (not GF ) was the star with an Italian style meringue that was basically pure marshmallow heaven. I got the famous ho-ho roll (GF!!) and while it really was super good it was lacking a little fudginess for me; the filling took over. However, we called and they said they could work with me me and make the key lime tartlet GF with enough notice; we were heading back home the next day but that's soooooo happening next time we're back in the spring. read more

My partner and I were looking for local spots in OBX that weren't "bar and grill" themed. A difficult feat in OBX. We found cafe lachine through reviews online, which we never would have found otherwise because it's tucked away in a corner of a strip mall. The interior is lacking- like how many framed photographs of waves can you hang? But the longer I was there the more I realized it was a necessary OBX charm. The food was amazing- one of those instances you can't believe how good it is despite its rough aesthetic. Amazing. One of the best lunches I've had in awhile. I ordered the lunch box and it customized it to get a turkey and provolone wrap, fruit, and creamy crab soup. It came with a little macaron for dessert (delicious). The wrap was average, but the soup was delicious (a bit spicy but I liked it), copious amount of crab meat in the soup! It was all the perfect amount of food and the atmosphere is relaxed with reggae music playing. This must be a place the locals go to. The grits and shrimp were the best I have ever had in my life. There were WOW good. There was just enough sausage and shrimp to give you a taste of each in every bite. The cheese in the grits was a perfect amount not making them too rich. It came with a side of fingerling potatoes which were good enough- not greasy. Wow is all I can say about this place. I always have to look up gluten free places for my kids but this place did not disappoint. My daughter got the shrimp and grits (I tasted the grits and they were delicious!). I had the partial portion of the decadent French toast. I normally don't have pancakes at breakfast spots because the gluten gets to me but I decided to go with a half portion because it looked so amazing (and well I'm on vacation). The French toast has orange zest on top with berries and (orange Marscapone stuffed on the inside). The bread is homemade brioche and omg it was to die for! I had a chicken bacon cheddar biscuit. Really wanted a biscuit but was hesitant about the chive in the biscuit. The owner told me about how the biscuits are made and assured me the chive flavor was good. She was absolutely right! The sandwich was a great combo of flavors and served with a yummy side of potatoes. We also ordered lemonade - mine was the berry, using frozen cubes of berries added to the lemonade. So deluxe and spot-on flavor. After our food was ready the owner offered to top off our lemonade which we had been enjoying while waiting. We Stumbled upon this cafe after a morning at the beach where we forgot to bring our own sandwiches (amateur move) and the burger shop in the same plaza was already closed for the day.. Considered ourselves lucky though as the food, atmosphere, and service far exceeded expectations set for a corner shop at a strip mall!!! The menu was full of different options, featuring a range of seafood, interesting (fried green tomato BTL!) and typical (tuna/chicken salad/turkey) sandwiches, breakfast all day, and delicious salads with all dressings (and seemingly sides, sauces,etc) made IN HOUSE. I ordered a shrimp po boy and side salad with spicy ranch and my sister did the crab cake sandwich and fries. And a side of spicy ranch. Was all very delicious, amazing garlic aioli or something on my sandwich, but the spicy ranch was truly out of this world!!! Wished I asked for the recipe... Our server was friendly but not TOO chatty (something I appreciate when I am extremely hangry as we were today) and certainly attentive. Overall dining experience was A++, I was VERY happy. We did get some baked goods to go.... key lime tart was superb (macadamia nuts in the crust!!) but I must say I was disappointed by my chocolate ho ho cake slice. Perhaps it's because I grew up with my grams making this same kind of cake a very certain way, but I did not find the cake or ganache sweet enough.. definitely ate it though :) Will certainly stop by again next year on our way to or from vacation! read more

Unfortunately the only thing we had which I can review are coffee drinks and a cookie. We made the mistake of going to Grits a couple doors down for breakfast and ignored this place. When we arrived here we had bellies full of average breakfast and we were just looking for coffee. Upon entering we completely regretted not coming here for breakfast. The place smelled amazing. The menu items sounded delicious. Everything that was coming out of the kitchen I wanted to it. However, I was unable to. All I could do was hang my head in shame. The restaurant was warm and inviting. It felt like home and was very relaxed. The coffee drinks were both very good and something you would expect from any good coffee house. Two words: chicken biscuit. This is the food that angels eat. That thing was an experience. You MUST try it if you visit this place. The downside is it will ruin all other chicken biscuits for you. I also had the shrimp and grits, also amazing. The grits were creamy and delicious with chunks of breakfast sausage in them! The shrimp were huge and perfectly seasoned. We have been going to the Outer Banks for many years and usually find okay places to eat. But this place is great for a dinner out. They only recently started serving dinner as they were more about breakfast and lunch. I highly recommend their dinner service. My wife had the carrot and ginger soup and said it was the best she has ever had. She also had the tile fish special which was excellent. I had the caesar salad and the shrimp po-boy, both good. For dessert, she had the coconut tart which she loved; I had chocolate peanut butter pie which was fine but not outstanding. After years having breakfast at The Dunes we opted to try something new. This is a nice little spot tucked away near what used to be the Outer Banks Mall. The service was a bit off from the time we arrived; tables weren't "bussed"/cleaned so we had to wait to be seated, slow service and lack of refills, etc. When we asked if they had sweet tea the server enthusiastically responded "yes, we sure do!" Unfortunately it was unsweet tea with a jigger of simple syrup on the side. Ma'm, that is not sweet tea. That being said, the food was good. We had a BLT, chicken/bacon/cheddar biscuit and crabcake benedict. The breakfast potatoes, while fresh cut, we're really soggy. The eggs, on the other hand, were cooked perfectly.
