I made an appointment for my LASIK exam. The exam itself is thorough and takes about 30 minutes. I met with a doctor who explains the procedure. I appreciate their honesty, in that they related they COULD do the LASIK procedure, but recommended that I NOT do it. They found out that I have cataracts, so I would need to have the cataract surgery in a few years, thereby wasting my money with the LASIK surgery since I would have to have it redone sooner than later. UPDATE - it's now been about 5 years. I have no complaints whatsoever. Both of my eyes are still going strong at 20/20. There's a little bit of residual astigmatism left in my right eye but not noticeable enough to require glasses or any changes. I have and will keep recommending this office. -- I knew I wanted to get my surgery done here before my consultation after reading reviews. The consultation only reaffirmed my decision. The facility is nice and easy to find with plenty of parking. The staff is courteous and responsive. I needed to get PRK instead of the traditional lasik which was very much as painful as they warn but they had instructions to help alleviate the pain. 4 years after my All-Laser Lasik Procedure in 2015. My eyes still remain in great conditions! My job requires to intensively look at the computer screen 8-9 hours every day & I also use my cellphone a lot on the side. UPDATE: 2 years later my vision is absolute garbage again. Very blurred while driving and especially at night. Reading more about my situation made me realize Joffe was ridiculous for encouraging me that it was fine for me to get Lasik at 20 years old. If you have less than perfect vision, but have doubts or fear, look no further than Joffe MediCenter in Bellaire! Before my procedure, I was basically "Bible blind" - that is, I would've been considered blind in stone age times... and probably would've died from being eaten by a saber tooth tiger. Because I didn't see it. Clearly. That said, everything about this place is professional and comfortable. The staff is friendly and efficient. All my questions were answered - and then some - at the first consultation appointment. They show you video clips explaining the surgery and any pre- and post-op information. From there, I learned I could either get LASIK, which most people get, or PRK - the predecessor to LASIK. Compare scraping your elbow to PRK, and paper cuts to LASIK. PRK has a longer recovery time, but there are long-term advantages for those with a thinner cornea, which I have. You have an option to take a Valium beforehand and get to relax in a massage chair and watch through their viewing room as others get their eyes fixed up. My entire procedure lasted only 14 minutes and was comfortable and painless. Dr. Kevin Merkley is quite the pro with these surgeries - having performed almost 30,000 of them! He is very patient and informative with all questions and concerns directed at him. My fiancé had LASIK performed by Dr. Merkley a year after my procedure, and only regrets not doing it sooner! He took a Valium and woke up 6 hours later with 20/20 vision and absolutely no discomfort. Compared to other places, Joffe is very affordable, and the cost is the total for everything - including the consultation, and any pre-op and post-op appointments. They offer a lifetime guarantee, so if you ever need touch-up surgery, it is included in the initial fee. There is also an incentive program in place for referring patients! WARNING: The following may keep you from getting corrective eye surgery. However, please do remember that the overwhelming majority of people get LASIK, which has FAR LESS post-op pain and discomfort that only lasts several hours. I'll tell you though, PRK is no joke when it comes to post-op discomfort. It was hell on earth for me for at least 3 days. First, disclaimer that I didn't receive LASIK here, but my fiancee did. I've been pretty much impressed by every aspect of our experience at Joffe! There was one tiny negative (which I'll describe below), but overall, my fiancee went from a -7 prescription (very poor vision) to having 20/15 vision in about 24 hours. She's super happy with how her eyes turned out, and I was very happy with how they treated us. OK, so to begin, we were able to snag an appointment very quickly. Our first visit was to simply test my fiancee's eyes and make sure she was a good candidate for LASIK. One small negative was that she confirmed her appointment via text and, when we got there, the front desk person indicated that they never received her confirmation (she said something like, "We weren't sure if you were coming."). Giving patients the ability to confirm their appointments via text is a really nice feature, but not if it doesn't actually go through! Throughout our first visit, we really enjoyed interacting with all of the different staff - everyone was very nice and did their jobs well. We had to sit around and wait for a while during one part of the process, but overall, the appointment went quickly and I had no real complaints. After learning that my fiancee was, in fact, a good candidate for LASIK (which was not a given for us because of her very high prescription), we scheduled the procedure to be performed the following week. This turnaround time was really exciting for us since many doctors have a much longer delay between appointments :) Honestly speaking, the LASIK procedure is usually quite quick and definitely lucrative, so I can see why they're inclined to schedule the surgery as soon as possible! Part of the LASIK recovery process is using various kinds of prescription and non-prescription eye drops to ensure that your eyes heal quickly, and we decided to use the pharmacy in their building to order the eye drops. My fiancee did everything over the phone a couple of days before the procedure and the eye drops were automatically sent up to Joffe so they'd be ready for pickup on the day of the procedure, so no complaints there! The big operation happened yesterday afternoon. My fiancee was offered Valium to help with nerves during the procedure, but she declined, so she went in stone cold sober. We watched a short video beforehand and the doctor (Dr. Merkley) came into the room where we were waiting to answer her questions - in particular, he answered specific questions about the number of microns that would be removed from her cornea, and she definitely appreciated that. Then, it was time for the surgery to begin - I watched the entire operation take place from an observation room. I have to admit that the close-up magnification of each eye on the monitor was slightly creepy, but everything went well and she told me that one of the doctor's assistants was very comforting and explained each step right before it happened. She did mention that the surgery was quite scary, but she stuck in like a trooper. I was definitely relieved when the doctor gave me a thumbs up! Immediately after the surgery, her eyesight was already better than it was pre-operation without glasses. We drove straight home and her eyes were definitely hurting during the ~20 minute drive - I recommend that anyone who receives LASIK use the lubricating eye drops on the way home as recommended, as we didn't :) Once we got inside our apartment, though, she used the eye drops and everything was a lot better (especially because of the decreased level of light - the Houston summer sun was not a friend that day!). She was miserable for a second, but after taking a short nap, she described the pain as going from 95% to 5%, so things were already looking up. The rest of the evening was spent lying in bed with her sunglasses and being treated to a burrito and smoothie by yours truly :) Audio books are also definitely a good idea for the post-surgery LASIK patient. By the next day, the pain was pretty much gone, and her follow up appointment went swimmingly. She's been driving around, shopping, and watching TV today, and she's loving her new eyesight! We're both really happy with our experience at Joffe and would definitely recommend it to anyone who was considering LASIK. Even just a day later, I already think it was worth the money, and we're so happy that she's gone from having very poor eyesight to being a vision wizard! So excited with my new special eyes! Just had my Lasik done this morning and WOW, so weird not needing my glasses or thinking I forgot to put my contacts on. Real Talk: - 3/3 fellow patients have an issue with their right eye not being as good as the left eye, and I wonder if it has to do with which eye they start with? Less than 3 weeks after my procedure, R eye is still a bit fuzzy, while L eye is perfect, as they've been since Day 1. - Felt like half my consultation time was spent waiting for the optometrist. Maybe it was just that day, but not having my phone coupled with hunger made the wait seem like forever. She was very sweet & apologetic when she got there though. Perhaps you could leave patients in the massage chair if the wait is longer than 20 min? - Preservative-free eye drops are considerably more expensive than contact solution and become a ubiquitous part of your life--pockets, purses, cars, bed, etc--they'll wind up everywhere. Had my all laser Lasik procedure a month ago. Everyone at Joffe was so nice, especially Carolyn and Dr. Su. The day of the consultation, they knew I had a flight to catch that night so they got me in a little earlier. I didn't have many questions since I've been to 2 other consultations elsewhere but they answered whatever questions I had to my satisfaction. The procedure was a breeze and super fast. I didn't really feel the Valium they gave me but Ashley talked me through every step of the way. Her voice was so soothing! However, on the way home my eyes started to sting badly. I was anticipating some discomfort so I took 2 Advil and a Benadryl as soon as I got into the car but the stinging was almost unbearable (it doesn't happen to everyone). It lasted about an hr until I fell asleep. After 4 hours of sleep I woke up with no more discomfort and clear vision! I still experience halos and starburst at night but it's improved quite a bit. My vision still fluctuates. I still don't see things sharply yet. I can't read certain small words that my husband is able to read. I hope that will change. It's still one of the best decision I've ever made! No more wearing glasses to sleep (I fall asleep watching tv every night) and no more being lost without my glasses. I will update in a couple months. I'd recommend to go to multiple consultations to see which office/doctor will provide the best service/quality care and also for a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th opinion! . A year after my lasik appointment, my right eye was getting a blurry, so I called Joffe to check on what was going. I was still within my 18 month warranty. I had to go to an optometrist to get an eye exam and they sent them the results and I never got a call from Jofee. Fast forward, almost 2 years after lasik and I can't see far out of my right eye. I believe I got my operation done in January so it's been about 4 months post op. I was looking forward to getting LASIK to rid myself of contacts and glasses but also to experience the procedure as weird as that sounds. Everything was explained to me thoroughly and the procedure went great. I could not come in the week after for a follow-up so they allowed me to come back the same day. The only uncomfortable part of my whole experience was maybe 10-15 minutes after the procedure. My eyes burned but it wasn't too excruciating. It felt like how your eyes feel when you get soap in them. Other than that, it was all painless. The length of the procedure from me laying down on the operating table to standing up was about 4 minutes from my estimate. Right when I stood up I could already see pretty well compared to my original vision with no contacts or glasses on. I highly recommend Joffe to anyone considering getting LASIK.
