Noni plant on the road outside of Joes Nuts
    Amberlee B.

PASS on Joes Nuts! Horrible woman/owner. We parked in one of the only two spots available. One car pulled in with us and immediately pulled back out, we should've taken their lead and left with them. The tour, is a walking tour- where you walk about 100 feet into to the edge of the orchard, where you bend down and pick up a few macadamia nuts in various states, and the tour guide described to you what each state the nuts are in. Tour guide was lovely, no complaints there. She then leads you back 50 feet to the small, rundown shed where they sell their macadamia nuts. She let us try a few of them, each are in a small 8 ounce bag, and none nearly as flavorful as other macadamia nuts we have had. We did get to watch the tour guide crack one raw, macadamia nut and let us try that one- those were absolutely delicious! However, they weren't selling those, and we were bummed, because we would've probably bought them. We thanked her for the tour, and walked just beyond our car to the road, where we found some native plants that we were taking pictures of, and just enjoying the afternoon. Mind you, we were not allowed to see the dogs that were being fostered, or any of the animals their site says you can pet. We were plant gazing for maybe 10 minutes when the owner (not the tour guide) came rushing out demanding that we leave immediately. (We said ok, apologized and started walking back) She stated that since we didn't buy anything we cannot stay on her property. She continued to berate us by telling us she has a business to run and asking us to leave immediately once again. Again, after the first time, she asked us to leave, we understood and were already walking back. Yet again, she continued berating us stating that since we didn't buy anything, we can't stick around. What started out as a seemly OK experience went very sour with all of the negativity coming from the owner. She also stated that we were taking out parking spots of customers, not a single car pulled pulled in while we were there. And for good reason! There are so many other macadamia nut farms and tour on the island, especially in the Kona area, spend your time and money there. Pass on Joe's nuts. Pictures are of the Noni and Bread fruit across the street from Joe's Nuts- but don't park at JNs unless you're going to buy their nuts.

    THE BEST FLAVORED MAC NUTS

We booked a camp site on this farm through HipCamp - everything was great! They provided a level grounded camping spot for our tent, porta potty and hot showers. There's lots of friendly, adorable animals that roam this property including chickens, goats, dogs, cats, a cow named Barbie and a white duck named Nelly. The owner also has a dog rehoming/rescue situation going on, which I thought was particularly admirable! If you plan on camping here, be aware that because of the animals - there will be lots of noise, but the experience is honestly completely worth it. All of the Mac nut flavors are addicting! I highly recommend coming prepared to buy multiple bags as it'll be almost impossible to choose just one flavor after you've tasted all of their samples! We went with Sweet Thai Chili, Coconut Curry, and F'n Hot. Just down the street is the painted church in one direction and the GORGEOUS Paleaku Botanical Peace Sanctuary in the other. This whole area is just magical in my opinion!!

    Yum!!!

We met the owner of the farm (Joe, I'm assuming) at the Sheraton Farmers Market and he was so kind. He offered us generous samples of pretty much every flavor of nuts which were all delicious and was just a really fun guy. He told us stories about how he accidentally spilled coffee on his vanilla macadamia nuts, which turned out to be host most popular flavor! It always feels really good to buy food local and from people who are passionate about what they do, and Joe definitely was one of those people! Thank you!!

Us at Joes Nut Farm, NOT petting goat or picking a nut. Also, can't he put a shirt on?

Very good nuts! Has interesting seasonings. Truly a cottage business but the chef, Mr Joe is knowledgeable and nice.

Really rude people. No aloha. Definitely avoid this place. If you need a snack, hit up Keoki's Fish and Chips instead.

KTA Express, you're a lifesaver!…read more I came to the KTA Express store twice in recent weeks, and this store/supermarket totally saved me from having to drive back in town (Kailua-Kona) to buy something I sorely needed. I was working at a local bank next door doing some lock work when I realized I needed a few 9-volt batteries to fix something. Being that I was traveling, and did not have access to all my normal gear, I asked the bank people where was the nearest store? Originally I was worried that I might have to drive all the way back to Kailua-Kona to get what I needed, but luckily KTA had a store in Kealakekua. Walked over to the KTA store, as it was just a hop, skip, & jump away from the local bank (where I was working). Got what I needed, and time & resources were saved that day! Last week Thursday I found myself back in Kealakekua working at a credit union this time. No, I didn't need anything in particular for the credit union this time, but after finishing the job at the credit union, the KTA store was very convenient for me to get some drinks & some grub. Apparently the KTA Express has a vendor - L&L Drive-In that does pre-made - ready to eat bentos. Some of the items looked pretty good, so I decided to give it a shot & picked up a mini BBQ Chicken & Noodle Bento. The mini bento was pretty tasty, and best part of it all is that I didn't have to go far to get my lunch grub. KTA Express in Kealakekua, you're a lifesaver! Lol!

Parking: They have a small parking lot. Very easy to find. Free parking. This was a large market. It had everything a grocery store provided, but products were a bit more expensive than usual. We ordered one small pizza to go and were happy to see how many options they had. Unfortunately for us, a lot of them included pork, which we don't eat. Still, I picked one pizza I was really curious about, and I was pleasantly surprised when they had no problem swapping pepperoni for chicken. That flexibility is always appreciated, and it never felt like we were limited just because we don't eat pork. We didn't dine in, but I noticed they have a really interesting cocktail menu, which fits the island vibe perfectly! To be honest, my husband wasn't expecting much, pizza isn't exactly what you come to Hawaii for, right? That's what we assumed. But wow, we were wrong. About 40 minutes later, back at our hotel (after a shower and everything), we finally sat down to eat, and the pizza was still amazing. Crunchy crust, great texture, and full, balanced flavors. We're no longer on vacation, but we still talk about this place and easily rank it in our top three food spots from our Big Island trip, which says a lot, because we're serious about pizza. If we ever come back to Hawaii (and I believe they have locations on other islands too), we will 100% be getting pizza from here again. Highly recommend giving it a try if you're visiting Hawaii

And to the west end?? You guessed it. The ocean! The view is simply stunning on a beautiful sunny mid afternoon. The young lady was pleasant to us. She answered all of our questions. Once she had everything she needed to make our plate fully loaded. She immediately concocted it in one of the largest containers (we ordered one to split it). We also asked for a side mashed purple sweet potato. The final product was a beautifully decorated plate of poke lunch with the dark purple sweet potato. Very appetizing looking indeed. We went with the California Dreaming and Shoyu as our poke choices. The kimchi and the ocean salad to accompany the pokes. Could it be better than this? The food (I mean everything) was delightful.
