We showed up with our group of 23, without calling ahead. They were so nice. We had teenagers so we didn't want a long tour. But Bob was great, told us about the trees, and a bit about the process. It is small and rustic. But people complaining clearly don't know much about how the Big Island operates. Be forewarned, they are also an animal rescue, in case you are afraid of dogs or cats. read more

Stopped by quick to buy some macadamia nuts, wasn't interested in the tour, pulled up to a small parking lot by the entrance, run down looking shack with a bird cage, bunch of chickens roaming the property all looks a little sketch. Lady came over seemed nice, talked about her farm, gave us a few samples, she also told us about a great little farmers market going on the next day. Had a wonderful time here. Nice quick tour of the farm and enjoyed seeing all the animals. Not only do they have rescue goats, a cow (and of course many fun/crazy chickens), they also have many rescue cats and dogs that are all finally getting the care and love that they deserve and need. Of course, we loved the Macadamia tasting and bought a nice selection for family and friends as well. This is a nice little stop for your day in the Captain Cook area. read more

PASS on Joes Nuts! Horrible woman/owner. We parked in one of the only two spots available. One car pulled in with us and immediately pulled back out, we should've taken their lead and left with them. The tour, is a walking tour- where you walk about 100 feet into to the edge of the orchard, where you bend down and pick up a few macadamia nuts in various states, and the tour guide described to you what each state the nuts are in. Tour guide was lovely, no complaints there. She then leads you back 50 feet to the small, rundown shed where they sell their macadamia nuts. She let us try a few of them, each are in a small 8 ounce bag, and none nearly as flavorful as other macadamia nuts we have had. We did get to watch the tour guide crack one raw, macadamia nut and let us try that one- those were absolutely delicious! However, they weren't selling those, and we were bummed, because we would've probably bought them. We thanked her for the tour, and walked just beyond our car to the road, where we found some native plants that we were taking pictures of, and just enjoying the afternoon. Mind you, we were not allowed to see the dogs that were being fostered, or any of the animals their site says you can pet. We were plant gazing for maybe 10 minutes when the owner (not the tour guide) came rushing out demanding that we leave immediately. (We said ok, apologized and started walking back) She stated that since we didn't buy anything we cannot stay on her property. She continued to berate us by telling us she has a business to run and asking us to leave immediately once again. Again, after the first time, she asked us to leave, we understood and were already walking back. Yet again, she continued berating us stating that since we didn't buy anything, we can't stick around. What started out as a seemly OK experience went very sour with all of the negativity coming from the owner. She also stated that we were taking out parking spots of customers, not a single car pulled pulled in while we were there. And for good reason! There are so many other macadamia nut farms and tour on the island, especially in the Kona area, spend your time and money there. Pass on Joe's nuts. ICK!! Disclaimer: I should of read the Yelp! reviews before deciding to stop by. I rarely write negative reviews (and really hate to do so but sometimes its warranted), but Yelpers should be aware of this nuts experience. If I could give a -5 star, I would. We drove by and saw the signs for a mac nut tour & wanted to check it out. From the moment we drove in, a group of dogs ran up, angrily barking at us (im a huge dog lover, but it did look like they were teetering on attack mode). The dogs settled down, but the guy that reviews are referencing to is pretty much the main guy that runs everything. The first thing that comes outta his mouth is that you gotta buy his mac nuts for a free tour. Okaaaaaaaaay, no problem, would love to support a local business. So, we walk up to the mac nut trees and his "tour" is about 2 minutes. I thought it was a joke! It was very generic and information that I've heard before. He was very condescending and disdainful throughout his talk. The "tour" was very awkward- he was very strange, patronizing when asking questions about his farm and the mac nut process. Very sketchy. Never felt so unwelcome & uncomfortable at the same time. I couldn't wait to skedaddle outta there and would never dare to stop there in the future. read more

The website indicates that the establishment is open most days; however, when the closed sign is displayed, there are no directions provided regarding the next opening time. During a recent visit, we briefly pulled our car in to turn around and check if anyone was available to inquire about when they would reopen. A staff member emerged, and when we asked for clarification, she responded rudely, referencing the sign and informing us that our car was obstructing the area. This experience was unexpected, especially considering that it is a family-run business located in Hawaii, where the local culture is known for its hospitality. Update to original post: After sharing my initial review, I reached out to Joe's Nuts via email to give them a chance to demonstrate that they care about their customers who wish to visit their nut farm. Below is their response, which further highlights their poor customer service: Their response: "not to be rude, but the two signs said closed, the farm mgr was out doing chores and i was busy with the other help and i believe i had the chain saw in hand, with the dogs barking, i just couldnt hear and needed to reload. do i care if you return or your comment nope, but it wasnt a bad scenario, it just was a morning faux pax." The last sentence is evidence that customer service is not a priority for them. Every negative review seems to be met with excuse after excuse. read more

The plus side of our visit is that it was on the same road as the painted church and Super J's cafe. The other plus side is we got to meet a real hermit in the flesh. Bob doesn't bother to give a tour and looks like you are inconveniencing him. But the packaged and flavored nuts are tasty. Otherwise, not a tour or even a comfortable place. read more

This is a hidden gem. Bob greeted us at our vehicle and made us feel so welcome. He proceeded to take us right over to a Mac tree and explain the entire processing of Mac nuts to our group. This 'tour' was completely free. They had awesome samples and 3 different flavours of Mac nuts for purchase. We of course bought several bags as bob was so friendly. He also recommended a beautiful coffee bean farm for us to visit and OMGoshhh it was amazing. Must visit as well. Heavenly Hawaiian farms is the name of it. After visiting the Painted Church, we drove north and I saw a small sign for a macadamia nut farm. This is a no frills stop. We got to meet Bob, a weathered local who warmly greeted us and talked about the farm and growing macadamia bits. After a 5-10 minute talk, he took us to this little shack where he has samples of differently flavored nuts. The product was great and the prices were reasonable. I liked the quirkiness of the stop. If you're looking for something fancy or polished, drive on by, but if you want to support one of the small guys, check this guy out. read more

We booked a camp site on this farm through HipCamp - everything was great! They provided a level grounded camping spot for our tent, porta potty and hot showers. There's lots of friendly, adorable animals that roam this property including chickens, goats, dogs, cats, a cow named Barbie and a white duck named Nelly. The owner also has a dog rehoming/rescue situation going on, which I thought was particularly admirable! If you plan on camping here, be aware that because of the animals - there will be lots of noise, but the experience is honestly completely worth it. All of the Mac nut flavors are addicting! I highly recommend coming prepared to buy multiple bags as it'll be almost impossible to choose just one flavor after you've tasted all of their samples! We went with Sweet Thai Chili, Coconut Curry, and F'n Hot. Just down the street is the painted church in one direction and the GORGEOUS Paleaku Botanical Peace Sanctuary in the other. My wife and I stopped here yesterday on the recommendation of some locals we met at the beach. As we pulled on the property we were greeted buy a older shirtless fella and a dog. He gave us the short tour/description of how the place is run and then a got to meet a few more friendly dogs running around. He said they are all rescues. At the end you go to a little shack where all the nuts are for sale We bought a few bags and they are delicious. The place seems pretty mom and pop so don't expect the world when you arrive but my wife and I are happy we did. read more

The farm itself was beautiful, however, from a business stand point it is poorly operated and requires new management in order to thrive. Unfortunately until that happens, this macadamia farm won't last and customers will continue to be cheated in thinking the macadamias are the product of this farm, when in fact, the macnuts sold were purchased from another grower. So everyone in Hawaii has been amazing and so warm and welcoming EXCEPT these people. I'd like to start by saying we saw the 3.5 star review and figured since everything here is so amazing how bad could 3.5 stars be..I thought we should check it out for ourselves. We woke up bright and early with a ton of excitement to check out joes nuts. We navigated to this place and pulled up to a sign that said "park" with a arrow to the left. There's was no space to the left of it and a lot of dogs came running to the car. We figured we were in the wrong spot so we backed out and drove down further to look for parking. There wasn't any so we turned back and decided to try again. We pulled up to a women literally screaming at us. We explained to her we weren't sure we were in the right spot. Needless to say we decided not to stay. Don't waste your time. It's clear what type of place this is just from the owners response on most of these reviews. I had read some of the positive reviews on this place and I couldn't have been more disappointed! First we arrive and there's no one around besides some dogs and tied up goats, so we walk around a bit and finally some guy in shorts with no shoes or a shirt shows up ! He looked and smelled like he hadn't showered in weeks, very off putting. He grumbles a few factoids about this "farm" and the "tour" which he proceeds to tell us he's not going to do but we're welcome to walk around if we like. We look around and all there really is to see are some beat up cars , some goats tied up around trees and some macadamia nuts on the ground ! That's it ! We felt bad so we bought a couple of bags of nuts which were not all that bad, however I wouldn't recommend this "Nut farm" . Don't waste your time or money! Very unprofessional.. read more

We met the owner of the farm (Joe, I'm assuming) at the Sheraton Farmers Market and he was so kind. He offered us generous samples of pretty much every flavor of nuts which were all delicious and was just a really fun guy. He told us stories about how he accidentally spilled coffee on his vanilla macadamia nuts, which turned out to be host most popular flavor! It always feels really good to buy food local and from people who are passionate about what they do, and Joe definitely was one of those people! Thank you!! read more

Um, ok...so the product is actually around a five star. This is for the farm visit. So, I was excited to visit after reading the website that the farm had goats and the ability to walk through the farm, etc. We drove up at a time the website said they were open, and it was closed. We drove to the coffee farm nearby then drove back by Joes. It was now Open..great! We pulled in, and 'Joe'...I don't think it was really Joe..came out with no shirt...and did not smell that great. He grudgingly explained the nut selection to us. I asked about the goat, I have an 11 yr old daughter, and he said 'yeah, they are in a fence'. Then asked if we could walk through the trees. He allowed us to do this for about 2 mins..then told us he had work to do. He kicked us out! I would have bought more nuts, but I was pretty hacked off at this point. I really wish they would update the website or facebook and down-play what a 'visit' to the farm means. So, fun to stop by and get unusual kinds of nuts, at a reasonable price, but don't expect much else. read more

We met one of the staff at a farmers markets and upon hearing that we were newly married, he filled our arms with bags of various kinds of macadamia nuts. We were so blown away by his generosity (and the delicious flavors) that we ventured out to the farm. The farm is quite a ways out there but was beautiful and surrounded by a lot of fun attractions on the way. We were given a tour of the grounds and were given nuts that recently fell off the tree to try. Unfortunately a large tour had just swung by so there wasn't a lot for us to sample or buy but we were happy for the experience. read more

We happened to be looking for something else when we notice the sign for Joe's Nuts. It is a macadamia nut farm. We pulled into the grass parking spot and was met by Cole who was there on a break from his job in Minnesota learning about macadamia nut farming. He took us on a tour of the farm, how nuts are collected, and showed us how hard the nut is to crack. We were able to sample one and it tasted like coconut meat. . We were not able to sample the coffee but they had samples of macadamia nuts not seen anywhere else such as Ginger Lime, Maui Onion & Garlick, and 100% Kona Coffee Macadamia (our favorite). The products are also sold in an outlet in Kona city. The farm is cash only bout the outlet accepts credit cards. Joe's Nuts also does mail order. read more

After touring my visiting friends to the Painted Church my next favourite stop is Joe's Nuts! This is the third time stopping by and Diane is the most entertaining and colourful host you will meet! Every time we visit there is one variety or another of fresh nuts coming out of the oven and they are delicious that way! The fresh roasted coffee is so aromatic and flavourful! I am also very happy to support local and the continuance of the organic biodiversity in the area that local farmers contribute to. You will really get a feel of Hawaiiana driving these parts.
