(GF) CLASSIC COMBO PIZZA
Jaime Q.

I don't really eat pizza but this place was just so so good!! What sold me was that they offered Vegan cheese! For all my lactose people, come here! The best pizza I've had in a while!

My husband and I love pizza, so on our last night on the Big Island we decided to grab pizza before our manta ray night swim. We ordered one small pizza to go and were happy to see how many options they had. Unfortunately for us, a lot of them included pork, which we don't eat. Still, I picked one pizza I was really curious about, and I was pleasantly surprised when they had no problem swapping pepperoni for chicken. That flexibility is always appreciated, and it never felt like we were limited just because we don't eat pork. We didn't dine in, but I noticed they have a really interesting cocktail menu, which fits the island vibe perfectly! To be honest, my husband wasn't expecting much, pizza isn't exactly what you come to Hawaii for, right? That's what we assumed. But wow, we were wrong. About 40 minutes later, back at our hotel (after a shower and everything), we finally sat down to eat, and the pizza was still amazing. Crunchy crust, great texture, and full, balanced flavors. We're no longer on vacation, but we still talk about this place and easily rank it in our top three food spots from our Big Island trip, which says a lot, because we're serious about pizza. If we ever come back to Hawaii (and I believe they have locations on other islands too), we will 100% be getting pizza from here again. Highly recommend giving it a try if you're visiting Hawaii

We love eating at Black Rock Pizza when we come to the Big Island. The Hoi Boi is my personal favorite. Family loves a standard pepperoni pizza. My picky kids even eat the crust and say it tastes like breadsticks

Not so Hawaiian pizza, specialty pizza
James Q.

We were very hungry and saw great reviews on this pizza place so we stopped by. The restaurant has great ocean view outside, and seems pretty clean. Server is friendly. We ordered a small loco moco pizza, and made a half and half pizza with not so Hawaiian and another specialty with the same spicy marinara sauce, forgot the name. Loco moco pizza is good, with running yolk fried egg on top. Not so Hawaiian and the other one is good but not impressive. I remember the not so Hawaiian being cheesy, which is a plus. Best dish is the short rib roll with beef au jus, loved it! It's a nice pizza place if you want pizza on your way, would stop by if I want some pizza again.

We were lucky enough to make it back to Hawaii and to black rock pizza. So it wasn't the bike ride that made us think this was a 5. It is definitely a gem. Home made sauces--delicious, we had a pesto ranch dressing, i don't think I've had that combo anywhere before Fresh salad Pesto roll appetizer--think, bite size calzone with pesto instead of red sauce stuffed with chicken, bacon, spinach, mozzarella. With pepperoni on the bottom. Yummy! 3 pizzas, all great. Nice selection of drafts Friendly and super helpful wait staff Amazing view And friendly cats on the patio!

BBQ Pork with pineapple slaw za'co

FOOD - Medium custom pizza: half cheese, half pepperoni, pineapple, and jalapeños. The pizza was really good. 4.5/5 - BBQ Pork with Pineapple Slaw Za'co: mango BBQ pork, roasted red peppers, mozzarella and pineapple coconut slaw. Good flavor but the "bread" got soggy which also made it messy. It would have been a lot better if it was crispier. 4/5 SERVICE: The service was really good. Our server was very friendly and accommodating. 5/5 FINAL THOUGHTS: I would definitely come back. Everything was good and the price was fair. I recommend this place if you're in the area.

Heard about this spot from a local friend. Told me to get the ribeye cheesesteak. And boy was he right! That thing was so awesome! Crispy edges and lot of flavor. We ordered the pepperoni rolls and Jalapeno balls to go along with it. All solid choices. The server was a great help in explaining what we were looking at as well. They had a good amount of beers on tap to choose from. And I really liked the outdoor seating. It was cloudy and felt good out there. So if you're looking for some good pizza, this is the spot.

Parking can be tight but if you don't go during peak hours it should be okay. It's a small lot. They've got some great signs lining the walls that I wish I could have at home myself too! You can mix pizzas if you order a medium or up, so I tried the kanak attack and local boy with BBQ glaze on top. It was loaded! Was able to eat most of it but took a few slices home for lunch the next day. The service was friendly, and the pizza was ono! Very pleasantly surprised to have this place in my neighborhood.

Out and about we dropped into Black Rock Pizza (Capt. Cook location) for lunch. Great location, customer service (thank you Kimberly), and food. Ordered a meat lovers personal pan pizza and Golden Sabbath Belgian Ale. Very good from start to finish.

Start salivating as you walk in.. this pizza is so delicious and off the wall! and the cats are cool too that hang with you as you sit and enjoy the view and a cold beverage. We tried the Loco Moco Pizza and were not disappointed. What a way to change up a local fave! and the Pesto Pepperoni roll apps were scrumptious!! It's a must stop in Captain Cook.

Veggie pizza
Nandini H.

Came here for a late lunch and tried the veggie pizza and ube cannolini. Both were pretty decent, I personally wish there were thin crust options as well but it wasn't an issue. Service was friendly and the ambience is quite nice. There is an option to sit outdoors with the beautiful ocean view as well.

Pesto balls are amazing and a custom pizza we put together ourselves!
Chad M.

So so good! Pizza is questionably the best pizza I've ever had. The wait staff is kind and quick to make you smile or laugh a bit. A must try if you're anywhere close or far we will be back again!

If heaven has a lunch counter overlooking the Pacific, I think I found it…read more The Coffee Shack isn't just about the view (and trust me, the view alone is worth the drive)--it's about everything that comes with it. Let's start with the sandwiches. The Hawaiian bread is absolutely incredible. Soft, slightly sweet, fresh, and honestly the best sandwich bread I've ever had. Every bite made me wonder why every sandwich in the world isn't served on Hawaiian bread. Then came the pizza. Authentic, artisan island flavor with a homemade crust that tasted like it had been infused with fresh rosemary and other garden herbs. The pineapple and ham tasted wonderfully fresh, making the classic Hawaiian pizza feel like it was invented right here. And then there's the balcony. You look out over the emerald-green Kona coffee slopes as they tumble down to the brilliant blue waters of Kealakekua Bay. The Pacific stretches to the horizon, sailboats drift across the bay, and on a clear day you can even spot the Captain Cook Monument across the water. It's the kind of view that makes you forget your phone...at least until you realize you need to take another picture. Come hungry. Stay awhile. Order dessert and another cup of Kona coffee. You'll leave wondering if you came for lunch or for one of the most beautiful dining views in Hawaii. Mahalo, Coffee Shack--you've spoiled me for every sandwich and pizza that follows.

Finals thought it would be a yogurt bowl, but it was only a spoonful of yogurt. The eggs Benedict's had great flavor, and the fish tasted sooo good with the hollandaise sauce . The omelet was very cheesy and we loved the cheese pull. While the cheesecake was good, the crust needs work. It's pretty hard and we couldn't break it up easily. Cookie was dry and not something we would get again. The bar was also pretty hard, but the flavors were nice.

This is a smaller place but the food is amazing. The guy taking our order could've been friendlier but it's whatever. We got a pepperoni and veggie pizza with ricotta, mushrooms and something else. Both were amazing, thin crust and we ate two big pizzas because we were starving. Drinks aren't on tap so you'll have to keep buying cans of soda or bottled water if you're thirsty.

Our first trip to the big island is no different, and after having pizza with our family one of our first nights at a wonderful and highly rated establishment here on the Kona side, we wanted something different and found Kona Crust. Located in a small shopping center strip, next door to spots like KTA grocery, Barrio Burritos, and a Fun Factory, we entered around 6:00-6:30p on a Saturday night to a small place with a few tables and a long hightop bar for seating. Order at the counter where there are pizzas on display for purchase by the slice. Comic books abound the walls for decor, which I believe may be for sale if you're interested. Greeted by a young guy behind the register, we asked if they make their Meat Lovers we hd seen online but wasn't displayed on their in-house menu. Assured they did, we ordered a 16" with no ham and a side of garlic knots. Was told it'd be about 20-25min. We checked out the rest of the shopping center and across the street during the wait to kill time. When we got back, the guy behind the counter we saw earlier making pizzas was the only one there. This dude had some skills that I, as a former pizza worker, appreciated--hand tossing the pie dough and making each pizza with expert care: I enjoyed watching him artfully sauce with precision the 25" pie dough crust he handled and grab mounds of shredded cheese to perfectly top the pizza. Our pizza was ready but the knots had to be warmed up a few minutes, which we didn't mind. We grabbed our order and before heading out the door, I checked the pizza in the box, as I always do to ensure it was made accurately. I then asked for crushed red peppers packets and to my surprise was told they charge for them "since we put them in little cups, but feel free to use our shaker--that's the free kind." Really? Never heard of a pizza spot charging for crushed red peppers to-go. If because is using cups, why not get packets?? Weird right? As this the reason for minus 1-star. Call me harsh, but that should just be a standard for pizza joints IMO. We brought the pizza home and definitely enjoyed our meal--even without the peppers. The knots were good plain but that sauce absolutely stepped them up a notch!! It was thick, almost like spaghetti sauce, and had some great flavor to it. The knots were tiny, perfect little bite-size pieces, and typically come in 15 pieces. The pizza was thin--NY style for sure. Not our typical favorite, as we like our with crust. But we do not hold any prejudice against any style and love all pizza types! This was really good, topping were tasty, and made for another wonderful vacation tradition. As a pizza lover and practically connoisseur of pizzas, I'd have no qualms recommending this spot. Small, local, friendly. Just make sure to have your own peppers if you like them, or eat there if you want the free kind. lol This place is DEE-approved--Happy eating!
