I so wanted to like this place, as a friend of mine told me to give it a try. The wife and I took the time to drive from Waterloo to La Porte City (a pleasant 15 minute drive) and discovered the place on the outskirts of town. It appears to be an old drive-in. Our first impressions were not good at all as it's a real dive, but we were still game so we pressed on.
I ordered one of the daily specials (Turkey Melt) with fries. The turkey was just lunch meat that was still cold from the refrigerator layered with tasteless bacon and cheese on some toasted bread. The fries were luke-warm (room temperature) at best. I took two bites of the sandwich and ate three fries before I pushed the whole basket away.
My wife ordered a Philly, which we expected to be on a hoagie roll, but it came on Texas Toast with onions. It was strange, but was okay. Once again, the fries were cold.
Our waitress was very young and seemed kind of put-out when I responded to her query about the quality of the food by saying, 'The water is good.', but she tried to be civil and did a good job of covering her ire, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt and left a $5 tip for her. She was gracious enough to not charge me for my sandwich, which I appreciated, but it wasn't quite enough to tempt us to come back any time soon. read more
