I could go on and on about this curiosity, but it's probably only curious to me and I don't feel like dragging through the hazards of monoculture. So I won't. Instead, this. Joel is Sandpointese for Jose. And, in the language of my tastebuds, Joel means damn good food. By whatever conveyance you choose (though bikes on a sunny hungover Saturday would be my recommendation), go. Across from the square and the farmer's market, bay door rolled up to let that first hint of autumn penetrate my taco, happy people sampling plates that only made their smiles broader. Sandpoint is a cool little town. When it snows you can't see anybody, but they're there. And they're nice and they'll treat you to a wonderful time. Whatever your enthusiastic fancy - biking, water sports, sliding down hills with slippery boards strapped to your feet - it's a town for all seasons. Unexpectedly great Mexican food in quaint downtown Sand Point. This place was jam-packed with lines out the door, and it was easy to see why when we got our food. It was packed at lunchtime on a weekday, so send someone in your group to stake out a table while everybody else orders. TONS of menu choices, including a wide selection of different kinds of fish - almost too many to choose from! The swai taco (about $2) was big and delicious. It seems like the lines are often long, but they move quickly and service is pretty fast. The ceviche was outstanding - you get a large cup and tortilla chips for dipping for about $7. It's enough for a light meal on its own, or you could add a (generously stuffed) taco to make a heartier meal. My only (tiny) complaint is that they charge 25 cents for soda refills. Honestly, I'm not sure how they could even monitor this, it's so darn busy. Fortunately, you don't have to stand in line all over again - just catch the cashier's eye, hand him a quarter and nod toward the soda fountain, they'll get your drift. read more

Authentic food, friendly staff, and a convenient location. They have done an amazing job of creating a locally adored establishment. Their meats are well seasoned and their ingredients are of quality. They know their neighborhood and have a good variety on the menu which they are more than happy to accommodate the customer. So what is Joel's? It's a place where the locals are addicted to the food/atmosphere and tourists wish they could duplicate it and take it home! Considering how busy they can get, they do an amazing job of staffing people and handling the crazy lunch rushes that occur. The wife always listens to some foodie face book site where the people take turns raving about the next big place. This week was Joel's. So we trekked up from cda. Upon our arrival I ordered a carne Assad's burrito and taco and she ordered a fajita burrito. My burrito was pure garbage. Probably the worst burrito i have ever had. Horrible flavor, swimming in sour cream. Basically dry meat and beans and 5x's the normal amount of sour cream. Conversely my wife's fajita burrito was the best burrito she's ever had. Looking back at the reviews I should have known to stay away from the carne asada burrito. Maybe I will try something different next time. read more

Ordered a chicken taco salad... on the menu it says GF. Not gluten free. Served over a deep fried flour tortilla. It had barely any flavor and almost no lettuce at all! It's a salad! I have wandered by Joel's several times in Sandpoint, and always notice the line out the door, which seems pretty crazy for Northern Idaho, but certainly seems to say, "People love us, come in for a taco." Of course, having no real great Mexican food in Spokane I was a little leery of what could be offered in Sandpoint. But, the hype is real, all these 5 star reviews are real. We were stopping for a quick lunch so picked up some carne asada tacos, and a potato taco. I was shocked at just how good this taco was..... Now usually I don't love carne asada, because it can be fatty and have some gristle bits, not my first love. But you can tell how good a place is by them, and these were hands down the best I have ever had.....better than most California places I have been to as well. Joel's is the real deal. My family has been eating at Joel's for at least 10 years now. If I could give them 10 stars I would. We come in to town a few times a year and stopping by Joel's is always first on the to-do list. We literally eat there every single day we're in town. I just finished an 8 day trip to Sandpoint and ate at Joel's 7/8 days. The only reason it wasn't 8/8 is because (sadly) they are closed on Sunday's. The fish tacos are to die for. Sometimes I even eat them for breakfast. The poppers are a must. Whatever the sweet and spicy sauce is that they come with will blow your mind. The eggs Benedict burrito is amazing and so is the chorizo burrito.
