This is where I go for lunch every time I'm in Sandpoint. I lived in Arizona for 12 years and grew up in SoCal, so I'm used to great Mexican food. Joel's is one of the best in North Idaho/Eastern Washington. I typically get their fish tacos or chicken rolled tacos, both of which are great. But, this is also a great place to branch out and experiment. I've yet to have anything here I didn't like, and nobody I've brought here has had anything but great things to say about their meal. Their tortillas are bit "bready" and occasionally I come across an item that is more anglo than Hispanic in its preparation, but otherwise this place is one of the best for Hispanic food in the area. Stopped in on my way through Sandpoint and was not disappointed. Amazing tofu selections, the people that work/own the shop are so nice, and they have a huge menu. They don't take any type of cards though so make sure to have cash. I had to run across the street to the US Bank and grab some, they were awesome enough to put my order in and my food was ready when I got back! read more

Stopped here on a road trip from Portland to Calgary. I had the swai tacos and my daughter had the tofu fajita burrito. Came up to Sandpoint from CDA with my wife for a few days away and was told this was an excellent place to eat. We both ordered the carne asada burrito and it was really just okay. It was not super flavorful and it really wasn't up there with some of the other awesome carne asada burritos I have had. Sadly so disappointing.... we're always up for tacos and heard only wonderful things about this place. We found it terribly overrated.... lacking in flavor entirely, overly salty and bland, with mushy/soggy tortillas and undercooked veggies. There was just no creativity to the flavors and, even though we tried a number of different menu items, they literally all came out the same. Everything tasted like it had come from a can, the lettuce was cheap and wilted and the contents spewed out of the shells haphazardly so they were difficult to eat. Sorry, Sandpoint. So I'm a little bit picky when it comes to Mexican food but this place definitely beat my expectation. We ordered the Wahoo burrito which was spicy but very yummy, a carne Assad's burrito which made my son very happy and my daughter had the bean & rice burrito. Ok. People in Idaho don't know tacos! I just shared a facebook post about how Joels has the best tacos in the COUNTRY!!!! And let me say this LAuGH OUT LOUD. A few weeks ago we came and tried the fish and shrimp tacos, which were frozen, breaded fish sticks and shrimp, fried and put in a tortilla. They were not memorable or even very goo but I said, no, Im going to give this place another try, so I came back and had the carne asada and pork tacos. What a let down! Again. The meat tastes like nothing covered in ketchup. The salsa is not evident, and truth be told after I was done all I could taste was the corn tortilla. The cooking of the tortilla was even inconsistent, one taco was a bit crispier than the other but neither taco had that crispy texture that makes a taco. And did I mention there is no cheese!? No CHEESE!! Its mexican food!! Everything should have cheese!! So all in all if the meat is not good, there is no spice or heat that you can detect, the tortilla doesn't crunch and there is NO CHEESE, can you even call it a taco!! read more

I love this place and every time I come home, I come here with my parents for fish tacos. I remember this place in high school (Go Bulldogs) when it was operated out of a food truck on 4th and Oak and we'd come here during lunch break. We used to sit at a picnic table they had outside after ordering. I love that they're doing well with a full restaurant on Church. It goes to show you can great business in Sandpoint and last over the years. You can't go wrong by coming here. It's also a partial service restaurant as opposed to full service. read more

Terrible. Ordered a chorizo breakfast burrito and it was so bad I threw most of it out. It managed to have zero flavor while tasting BAD at same time...hardly any cheese and the salsa they put inside was totally watery and left everything runny, mushy and kinda gross. This is "fast casual," not a service restaurant, but I have been eating at Joel's since it was operated out of a shack across from the market, and I have never had a bad bite there. That rates 5 stars by any measure. Joel's is so reliably good that I take every out-of-town guest for a ritual meal - and they usually demand to go back (or find their way when I'm not looking or cooking). My current favorites are anything they do with their ceviche, their fish tacos and (always) the shredded chicken tacos. Frosting on the cake is that, depending which way I go, I can fill up for under $7. If you are a visitor on a schedule reading this while motoring toward Sandpoint: Call and order ahead when you are 10-15 minutes out of town. The waits at the window can be stupendous, and it would really be a shame if you had to leave hungry because you could not wait. read more
