But the food we ordered was worth feeling so full because it was wicked good. Located on Strand Road in downtown Derry, outside the City Walls, Browns in Town has a modern interior with brown wood walls in the primary dining area and a little postmodern-styled lounge in the front entrance. The vibes are fairly relaxed where you don't feel you have to dress up outside of jeans and a shirt to enjoy a meal. The food per our experience is certainly that of comfort and quality. One aspect my wife and I loved about Browns in Town, and many of the restaurants we visited in Northern Ireland and the Republic, is that on the menu we know which dishes are celiac friendly or have a celiac option, and note all the allergens present -- e.g., gluten, shellfish, dairy, eggs, nuts, etc. My wife is celiac, so this allowed us to choose this restaurant since it offers many gluten-free options -- and not just salad. Both of us ordered the local seafood chowder (I had the gluten version, while she had the celiac option), which was creamy, buttery, and delicious, loaded with a variety of seafood caught in the area and served with homemade bread. The Mushroom & Black Garlic Risotto was out of this world, with the pine nuts and parmesan providing a nice balance with primary ingredients -- also luscious and rich. The chefs cooked the risotto to perfection. I probably was fine just ordering that, as the black garlic chips (fries to us Americans) were overkill, but I couldn't help myself being at a restaurant for the first time in a city I have never visited before. My wife had the beer-battered cod in the gluten-free option and incredibly tasty, especially when combined with the mushy peas and tartar sauce. We didn't even attempt to order dessert because we were full to the point of being in a food coma. Fortunately, we had a lot of walking around ahead of us, which helped work off our meal a little. But I would absolutely return to enjoy some of the other fares they have on the menu.

For example, we were there during the annual Irish Open golf tourney, and they made a green full with a sand-trap made of nuts, a candy flag, golf clubs, and golf ball. So good, I felt guilty having them cut into what was a tasty Tropical Pineapple flavor. My wife had a butterscotch that may have been the most satisfying dance of brown sugar, butter, and vanilla I've ever had. For Yanks, you'll notice almost every scoop of ice cream you have here is creamier (and better) than any stateside. Roughan's is no exception: Creamy, fresh, non-artificial goodness. It was a little TOO sweet, but I'll deal with the sugar coma every time I roll through Portstewart. Yum!

My first experience of their quality produce was in a dessert at Bourbon in Belfast, and the ice cream was so good that I HAD to go look it up to keep my taste buds satisfied! They make everything on their own farm and are proud to say that they make everything themselves on the farm with lovingly cared for Jersey Cows! Gone are the days when ice cream was just a poorly frozen block of Vanilla. The flavours here are inventive and delicious. Want some Panna Cotta and Raspberry Pavalova ice Cream? Check. Feel like some chocolate honeycomb crunch? No problem! And the delicious flavours just keep going. It can be hard to find but the largest Supermarkets do sell it! If your local shop doesn't stock it nag them to get it because it really is worth it. I can't even sign off with an obligatory pun because the best one is in their name!For the pun alone I salute them!
