While I haven't trekked through every mile of Northern Ireland, I can't imagine a place with more epic, sugar-coma-inducing, and tasty ice cream than Roughan's in Portstewart
I mean, man, they have big ole donuts IN one of their ice creams ... need I say more? The thing that really stands out is the artistry of the ice cream. And there are new masterpieces every day.
For example, we were there during the annual Irish Open golf tourney, and they made a green full with a sand-trap made of nuts, a candy flag, golf clubs, and golf ball. So good, I felt guilty having them cut into what was a tasty Tropical Pineapple flavor. My wife had a butterscotch that may have been the most satisfying dance of brown sugar, butter, and vanilla I've ever had.
For Yanks, you'll notice almost every scoop of ice cream you have here is creamier (and better) than any stateside. Roughan's is no exception: Creamy, fresh, non-artificial goodness. It was a little TOO sweet, but I'll deal with the sugar coma every time I roll through Portstewart. Yum! read more
